Ly Tai Mui of Quang Ninh?s Dam Ha District was admitted to the Quang Ninh General Hospital on Tuesday with high fever, low blood pressure, and severe respiratory problems, doctors said.
But doctors reported they were unable to conclude if Mui had been infected with the H5N1 virus. One test showed she carried it, but another was negative.
Health experts were dispatched Saturday to Quang Ninh to carry out further examinations. Work to disinfect Dam Ha District also began Saturday.
Quang Ninh, where the world renowned Ha Long Bay is located, is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Hanoi.
Before Mui, an eight-year-old girl in the northern province of Thanh Hoa who fell sick after eating duck and chicken raised on her family's farm was diagnosed with the bird flu. She has since recovered, but her 13- year-old sister died in the hospital earlier without being tested for the virus before her burial, health officials said.
The Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau reported Saturday the bird flu has spread among four local communes, prompting the culling of 3,250 birds to contain the epidemic.
The Ca Mau government also asked agencies concerned to take further measures against the spread of the disease in the province.
The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang began disinfection work Saturday after 700 birds were recently reported to have died of the flu.
The avian flu has thus far infected poultry in four provinces in the country ? Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Soc Trang in the Mekong Delta region and Nghe An in the north.
The H5N1 remains largely confined to birds, but experts fear it could mutate into a form that is easily transmitted by humans and spark a pandemic that could kill millions worldwide.
Since 2003, Vietnam has recorded 52 human deaths from bird flu, the second highest toll after Indonesia, where the virus has killed 115 people.
Chicken thieves
The deputy chairman of the People?s Committee of Hanoi Saturday called for strict action against residents who stole around 1,000 chickens meant for destruction three days ago in Hanoi?s Thuong Tin District.
On Thursday, the Hanoi Veterinary Bureau was collecting some 1,500 chickens of unknown origin for culling when many locals flocked to the scene to take the birds back, said bureau chief Nguyen Xuan Vui.
They dug up holes to retrieve buried chickens or jumped into the trucks to get the fowl back, Vui said.
Vui also said he had warned the people it would be very risky to eat the birds, but the warning had fallen on deaf ears.

Jumpy because awareness

(ANTD), the people poured buckets robbed destroys chickens occurred in Hong Van (Thuong Tin) made the last one must look back giật their social awareness of many people today.

They also jump down to the chickens they choose to rob. The Department, including the 1500 car chickens to bring all people have been robbed to exceed 2 / 3, the large beach, the dead chicken was left king v?i everywhere.

And, people have to be to think will do, when you see your birds arrested because there is no paperwork quarantine, being sent all but the last hand to the people? They have the heart to do the type of the functions, expertise?

This is not the first time to speak out the lack of responsibility of local authorities in the prevention of disease of cattle and poultry.

However, like success, beyond the local authority is aware of the people is an important factor because this is the battle to protect the health of the network ourselves.

Moreover, while robbed, one with gold, so, when to the house of the latest dead bring dismantle, ability to distribute the germs environment. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vui, Director Department Animal Health Department said Hanoi, this is not the first time occurred in people robbed chickens destroyed.

Have long, members of the Steering Committee countries, from the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to the Department of Animal Health Department have said that the attention of local authorities to the prevention of disease is lacking. This is one of the main reasons causing disease control recurrence.

Avian influenza has become a pandemic in Vietnam and many countries in the world from 5-7 years. People died because of eating sick chickens have influenza A/H5N1 and not less. it so that people living on the Hanoi area are still not aware of all the risk of infected poultry to humans.

Do not get the contract in the community, not be concerned by the stars over the in the government departments at all the sessions to take the cup. Not only cost money, effort, but also sowing the germs Iraq and things around.

All of the chickens dead have been confirmed infected or not, but all stop at the level of doubt is not transparent about the origin and quality. If the chickens are carrying germs, the result is extremely large, not only the environment but important, their many people threatened.

Immediately before the witness of the people, the functions have the same spray is being concentrate on the entire car chicken, and do not forget to remind "insecticide concentration of this concentrate so very dangerous, it is not other bleach, the depth. Therefore, her children take it. " However, a warning that does not work.

Vietnam: Nine Detained Over Bird Flu Fracas

2009-02-09 17:48
HANOI, VIETNAM: Vietnamese police detained nine people suspected of having led a mob of villagers who prevented authorities last week from destroying chickens to stop the spread of bird flu, authorities said Monday (9 Feb).
The nine villagers were detained Saturday (7 Feb) in Thuong Tin district just outside Hanoi where the brawl occurred Thursday (5 Feb), said Nguyen Van Phuong, the district police chief. They could face charges of "openly appropriating property," he said, an offense that carries up to three years in prison.
Police in Vietnam can hold suspects up to nine days without charges.
Dozens of villagers in Thuong Tin overwhelmed police and health authorities Thursday and stopped them from destroying about 1,500 chickens smuggled in from China, officials said.
As authorities removed the poultry from a truck to burn them in a pit, the villagers _ desperate for the income the birds could provide _ grabbed the chickens and ran off, they said.

VIET NAM - Veterinary stations in Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon districts Saturday seized over 300 live birds, 130 kilos of chicken and 300 uncertified eggs, which were being illegally traded and transported into Ho Chi Minh City.

Binh Chanh and Hoc Mon districts border the Mekong Delta provinces of Long An and Tay Ninh, which are major sources of poultry, report official sources in Viet Nam.

The chief of Binh Chanh Veterinary Station, Vo Van Thong said that untested poultry, transported by motorbikes through the district into the city, has been increasing over several days, raising the risk of a bird flu outbreak in the city.

Meanwhile a new outbreak of bird flu has occurred in Dong Trieu District in the northern province of Quang Ninh. The province is currently attempting to cope with an outbreak in Dam Ha District.

Hundreds of chickens have died since the Tet holidays but residents did not report these to local authorities.

Local authorities only became aware of the outbreak after a resident was hospitalized with suspected flu caused by the H5N1 virus.

New bird flu case hits Khanh Hoa

(20-02-2009)

HA NOI ? Bird flu has emerged in central Khanh Hoa Province, raising the number of provinces hit by bird flu to ten, according to the animal health department.

Nguyen Van Trung?s unvaccinated ducks and fowls tested positive yesterday for the H5N1 virus in Khanh Hoa Province?s Vinh Phuong Commune.

Officials are worried because 10 days ago, upon realising that three fowls had died with virus symptoms, Trung?s six-member family and their guests ate them all. Trung threw other fowls away as they continued to die without informing local officials, according to the province?s animal health department.

Finally when 22 fowls had died he informed the department.

Yesterday, the locality decontaminated Vinh Phuong Commune and checked the health of people who had eaten the contaminated birds.

The Khanh Hoa provincial People?s Committee also asked other localities to strictly supervise livestock breeding farms to facilitate quick discovery of, and solutions to, epidemic outbreaks.

Bird flu has recently broken out in some Cuu Long delta provinces, primarily infecting flocks of free-range ducks, according to the region?s animal health departments.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan, former rector of An Giang University, said free-range ducks could carry the bird flu virus to disease-free provinces as they move to eat from harvested rice paddy fields.

Anti virus cloth coming

"Healthy people without protective clothing and masks who come within one metre of an infected bird are at high risk of contamination," said Tran Tinh Hien, deputy director of HCM City Tropical Disease Hospital.

Not all fowls stricken with the virus show the symptoms, so it is necessary for people to be equipped with anti-virus clothes, according to Hien.

An anti viral fibre called Flutect, which can reduce bird flu risk by 99.9 per cent even after 50 washings, has just been introduced to Viet Nam.

Flutect can be used effectively to make protective clothes, gloves and masks for people frequently in contact with fowls. It has been licensed by Japan?s National Research Institute and is already commonly used in Japan and Indonesia.

Provinces with confirmed cases of bird flu include: Khanh Hoa, Thanh Hoa, Thai Nguyen, Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Nghe An, Hau Giang, Quang Ninh, Bac Ninh and Quang Tri. Approximately 30,000 fowls have been culled.
