UN warns Vietnam to be "vigilant" on bird flu

Posted: 24 February 2009 2203 hrs

HANOI : UN agencies called on Tuesday for Vietnam to be vigilant in fighting bird flu after three new human cases were discovered this year, including one woman who died.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said Vietnam, which has seen more bird flu deaths than any country except Indonesia, had to monitor the situation closely.

"While avian influenza poses a threat to humans and poultry throughout the year, experience in Vietnam has shown that the threat is highest at this time of year," Jean Marc Olive, a Vietnam-based WHO official, said in a joint statement.

"There is a real possibility that the virus will mutate and become easily transmissible between humans. If this occurs we could see the start of a new influenza pandemic."

"The avian influenza virus is also not currently able to spread easily between humans, but influenza viruses are known for their ability to change quickly and can become more adapted to humans with dire consequences," the statement said.

Since its all has infected 100 people, of which 53 have died. HPAI is not only affecting the production but also affect social life and networks of people. There are translations appeared in 11 provinces, as this is quite serious.

To improve the responsibility of local authorities in the prevention of disease, Deputy Prime Minister requested "must urgently and extinct, to spread disease further. Re: Vietnam - General News + Poultry/Animals/Wild Birds Jan 30, 2009+

Vietnam has a very big problem, with birds and high risk conditions prevalent throughout the entire country. I could sit here all day just posting new outbreak areas continually. One province in particular Quang Ninh has pig disease, hoof and mouth and bird flu in the same areas..a very oversaturated condition..if you know what I mean. I wil also say with the tremendous amount of bird and duck deaths and the rapid spreading , I can hardly believe every pig death is a result of prrs. No confirmation of course ,
but they never call me directly to let me know ;)
