Hanoi - Hundreds of ducks have contracted avian flu in Vietnam's southernmost province, local officials said Monday.

More than 460 ducks on a farm in the Tran Van Thoi district of Ca Mau province tested positive Friday for the H5N1 virus, the bird-flu strain that can be deadly in humans.

'This is the first occurrence of bird flu in our district,' said Su Van Minh, deputy head of the district's avian-flu-control committee. 'We have culled all infected ducks and disinfected the surrounding area to prevent the virus from spreading to other farms.'

Lam Minh Tuan, chairman of the commune where the outbreak occurred, said there had originally been more than 700 ducks in the affected flock. Dozens of ducks per day began dying on January 19 but duck farmer Nguyen Van Dong did not inform local authorities until January 29, Tuan said.

'Luckily, no one in Dong's family ate any of the sick ducks,' Tuan said.

Tuan said most of the ducks in Dong's flocks had not been vaccinated against H5N1.

The outbreak might have spread to a neighboring village, where 20 ducks recently died. Authorities took samples from the dead birds for testing.

Tuan said local authorities had established inspection teams and were vaccinating all fowl in his commune.

Vietnam's government has required all domestic fowl to be vaccinated for avian influenza since 2005. But in practice, many ducks and chickens on small local farms go unvaccinated, and animal health experts said the goal of inoculating every fowl in the country is unrealistic.

Vietnam's first human case of bird flu this year was reported in January when a 13-year-old girl from Thanh Hoa province, 150 kilometres south of Hanoi, tested positive for the virus. The girl's older sister had died on January 2 in Thanh Hoa after displaying symptoms consistent with bird flu, but doctors failed to test for the virus, and her body was not disintered for testing for religious reasons.

Avian influenza has infected 106 people in Vietnam and killed 52 since it first appeared in the country in late 2003.

The disease is usually spread by contact between sick birds and humans, but scientists fear that the virus could mutate into a form that is easily transmissible among humans and could spark a global pandemic that could kill millions.

Ca Mau effectively controls bird flu

The Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with the authority of Tran Van Thoi district in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, to curb the outbreak of bird flu in Rach Bao hamlet, Khanh Binh commune.

The authorities guided communes and districts to control the disease effectively, organize teams to raise public awareness of the necessary to combat bird flu infection. Cattle transport was also strictly monitored.

The bird flu outbreak has recurred in Tran Van Thoi district since January 15, killing 150 ducks out of a total of 700. The dead ducks tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

Foot and mouth disease has been reported in Long An, Kon Tum and Son La provinces, although the disease is considered to be under control.

Bird flu recurs in Soc Trang province

Samples taken from sick ducks in Vien Binh commune, My Xuyen district in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang have tested positive for the bird flu virus, according to Nguyen Huu Vinh, deputy head of the Soc Trang provincial Animal Health Department.

The deadly virus was detected in the duck flock of farmer Ly Sa Rinh in Vien Binh commune?s Dao Vien hamlet on February 5. Before the lunar New Year festival, as many as 527 ducks out of nearly 700 of Mr Rinh?s two-month old ducks were found dead.

He informed My Xuyen district?s veterinary agency, which then culled all ducks in the flock and implemented sterilizing measures in his breeding farm and surrounding areas.

Currently, Soc Trang has 3.5 million heads of poultry, including 1.7 million chickens and 1.8 million ducks. Provincial authorities are intensifying measures to prevent the spread of the bird flu epidemic.

However, the free-range duck flocks in many Mekong Delta provinces still pose a high risk for the recurrence of the disease, especially in the cold weather at present.

Hoa Binh: According to information by date 04/2/2009, the case of buffaloes, cows and infected LMLM in Pheo cun, Mai Chau district has been identified with positive LMLM virus type O. Animal Health Department are conducting anti-disease measures as prescribed.

Currently, there are Long An (19 days), Kon Tum, Son La and Hoa Binh LMLM not have the disease last 21 days.

Bird flu spreads in Vietnam

HANOI - THE H5N1 strain of bird flu has been reported in more localities across Vietnam, raising fears of a possible epidemic, official and media reports said on Friday.

The latest outbreak occurred on a farm in Mekong delta's Ca Mau province, where 300 unvaccinated ducklings died of the virus, said the national animal health department.

The Hanoi-based office in its earlier reports said avian influenza had been found in ducks in nearby Soc Trang province and Nghe An province in the country's central.

The state-run Thanh Nien newspaper said on Friday that southern Bac Lieu has been added to the list of bird-flu hit provinces.

'Epidemics could spread easily because of cold weather and local residents' habit of letting the ducks run around in rice fields,' Thanh Nien said, adding thousands of infected poultry have died or been culled this year.

Earlier this month, Vietnam's capital Hanoi issued a ban on the widespread use of motorbikes or bicycles to transport poultry and livestock for fear it could help trigger an epidemic.

However, state media has frequently reported that meat products continued to be transported by motorbike into the city daily despite the ban.

The communist state, which has been hit by bird flu since 2003, reported a human case this year, an eight-year-old girl from northern Thanh Hoa province who has now recovered.

Her 13-year-old sister died in hospital earlier but was not tested for H5N1 before the burial, health officials said.

Vietnam has recorded 52 human deaths of bird flu, the second highest toll after Indonesia, where the virus has killed 115 people. -- AFP

Outbreak of avian flu, central and southwestern regions

The Department of Animal Health in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang on February 5 confirmed bird flu in 700 free-range water-fowl in My Xuyen District.

Two month old ducks had previously been vaccinated against the disease. Veterinarians culled all poultry and disinfected the affected area to prevent the disease spreading.

As the duck breeder, Tran Van Han, in Gia Rai had 29 ducks that died from bird flu symptoms, the Department of Animal Health in the neighboring province, southwest of Soc Trang, Bac Lieu destroyed 270 ducks and veterinarians took samples for tests.

Ca Mau Province in the southern tip of Vietnam, authorities are worried that the spread of bird flu maybe out of control.

The People?s Committee issued instructions to cull diseased poultry and any chickens with symptoms of avian influenza, not waiting for tests.

By February 5, nearly 3,000 poultry in Thoi Binh District presented symptoms of the disease.

It is a big challenge for veterinarians in the Mekong delta provinces of Ca Mau, Soc Trang and Bac Lieu as bird flu occurred in flocks of water-fowl raised in free-range conditions.

Inspectors from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Animal Health fined 166 people for the sale of live poultry and smuggling of water-fowl into the city. Unsafe poultry, including 600 cocks, 180 ducks, 544 dead poultry, 350 birds and over 22,000 eggs, have been destroyed.

Bird flu has not only occurred in southern Vietnam but in the center as well. The Department of Animal Health in the central province of Nghe An and local administrators culled 380 ducks in Do Luong District.

The farmer?s, Nguyen Van Hung, flock of water-fowl died between January 31 to February 3 and samples tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu strain. 3,000 dozes of vaccine against H5N1 and 60 liters of chemicals have been earmarked for sterilization of the area.

In related news, director of the Department of Animal Health in Section III Duong Tat Thang confirmed tests showed that swine of farmer Nguyen Thai Huy and his neighbors died of cholera, not of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, commonly known as blue ear.

A melee broke out in northern Vietnam when more than 100 villagers prevented authorities from destroying chickens to stop the spread of bird flu, officials said Sunday as the country announced its second H5N1 case.


About 100 villagers in Thuong Tin district just outside Hanoi overwhelmed police and health authorities Thursday and stopped them from destroying about 1,500 chickens smuggled in from China, said official Vu Van Dung.

As about 30 police and health officials removed the poultry from a truck to burn in a pit, the villagers ? desperate for the income the birds could provide ? grabbed the chickens and ran off.

"I told the villagers that the chickens had been sprayed with chemicals and were not edible, but they didn't listen," Dung said. "They grabbed chickens from us, and we were overwhelmed."

Meanwhile, in northern Quang Ninh province, tests results confirmed Friday that a 23-year-old woman was infected with the H5N1 virus.

She was on a respirator since being hospitalized five days ago, hospital deputy director Nguyen Quoc Hung said. The woman became ill after slaughtering and eating chickens her family was raising.

Five other family members who had also eaten the chicken showed no symptoms.

In early January, an 8-year-old girl from northern Thanh Hoa province tested positive for bird flu, Vietnam's first reported human case in more than 10 months.

Bird flu has killed 52 people in Vietnam, including five last year, since it began raging through Asian poultry stocks in late 2003.

The H5N1 strain has killed at least 254 people worldwide since 2003, most through contact with sick birds. Scientists are monitoring the virus because of its potential to mutate into a new human influenza virus, which could infect millions.

(LDDT) - HPAI in Ca Mau province are complex variables. Authorities have detected 19 outbreaks in poultry raising households, concentrated in 3 Tran Van Thoi district, Binh Thoi and U Minh.
Recently, xiem ducks in Phu Tan district also sick, although this is influenza resistance can be strong, since its not detected H5N1 infected.

Epidemic influenza has appeared in many years in Ca Mau, especially in winter as it does, cause damage to both people and local authorities. However, people still here are no sense of high alert, even owners in the prevention of disease.
