Venezuelan authorities reported 121 deaths from influenza A

Total of 121 people infected with the H1N1 virus have died in Venezuela, where 2742 cases have been confirmed since the disease appeared in the country last April, according to official figures published today.

The latest bulletin of the Directorate of Epidemiological Surveillance presents these figures based on data accumulated "until 23 December" as published Wednesday in the website of the Ministry of Health.

A total of 12,070 suspected cases of influenza A have been studied by the Venezuelan health authorities, which were confirmed with the 2742 virus.

Of those confirmed cases of the disease since 2235 have received "high epidemiological" while 121 were due to "deaths influenza/H1N1 with positive results," the official information.

The Venezuelan Minister of Health, Carlos Rotondaro said last September that the government will invest 25 million dollars to buy 5 million doses of vaccine against the disease and would be distributed free to the public in 2010.

The first case of influenza A was found in Venezuela last April 28 in a 22 years he had traveled to Panama
