California County confirms first instance of West Nile virus in 2019
POSTED 11:24 AM, MARCH 15, 2019, BY CITY NEWS SERVICE

SAN DIEGO ? County officials confirmed Friday that they?ve identified the year?s first instance of West Nile virus after a Cooper?s hawk tested positive.

Officials with the county?s Vector Control Program only found small amounts of the virus in the hawk?s tissues, leading them to believe it was an old infection. Last year, only one county resident contracted West Nile virus and ultimately survived, but the virus has spread to as many as 44 residents as recently as 2015. Six people died due to the virus that year.

New Jersey confirms its earliest ever West Nile Virus case
(Andre Penner)

Updated 24 minutes ago
LODI, New Jersey (WABC) -- New Jersey health officials have confirmed the state's first human case of the West Nile virus this year, the earliest it has ever been detected in state history.

They say a Hunterdon County man in his 70s began showing signs of meningitis on June 21 and was hospitalized for several days.

They later confirmed he had contracted West Nile virus, which is spread by mosquitoes that have fed on an infected bird.

The man is still recovering at home. His name and further details about the case have not been released.

Officials say 61 people in New Jersey were infected by West Nile virus last year, marking the highest number of cases ever reported in the state.

Maricopa County reports first West Nile death of the season, Community urged to 'Fight the Bite'

July 11, 2019 - 11:35 am
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health is reminding the community to prevent mosquito bites with 27 human cases of West Nile virus infection reported this season, including one death. The individual who died was an older adult who also had other health conditions. Sadly, older adults and those with other chronic health conditions are most at risk for serious complications of West Nile virus.

?This tragic death serves as an important reminder to all of us to do our part in protecting ourselves, our family and our neighborhoods from mosquito-borne diseases,? said Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, medical director of the Disease Control Division at Maricopa County Department of Public Health. ?With monsoon season upon us, it?s likely we?ll see even more mosquito activity. Use insect repellent whenever you are outdoors, and get rid of water outside your home where mosquitos can breed, like pet dishes, potted plants, even toys.?

Nebraska woman dies of West Nile virus
Posted: Fri 11:44 AM, Jul 12, 2019 | Updated: Fri 4:54 PM, Jul 12, 2019

The Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed a woman in Nebraska has died of West Nile virus. This is the first case of West Nile in Nebraska this year.

Photo: Franco Patrizia
The case was reported in May and it was in North Central Health Department’s jurisdiction which includes Antelope, Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, Knox, Pierce and Rock Counties.

The woman is between 25 and 50 years old. She had an underlying medical condition, which makes a person more likely to experience serious consequences.

DHHS said the woman started experiencing West Nile symptoms very early, outside of the usual West Nile season. State epidemiologists said this an unusual case and appears to be an anomaly.
