Mosquito season: Time to vaccinate horses for West Nile
    Apr 18, 2018 Updated 11 hrs ago

SPARKS -- The Nevada Department of Agriculture urges horse owners throughout the state to vaccinate against West Nile Virus.

The virus can cause severe illness in a horse’s brain, spinal cord and nervous system.

“Vaccination is the best protection horse owners have for their animals,” Dr. JJ Goicoechea, the NDA’s state veterinarian, said. “Vaccinations, in conjunction with practices that reduce exposure to mosquitoes, are very effective in protecting horses from WNV.”

Dallas West Nile Virus survivor stresses seriousness as mosquito season looms
POSTED 5:11 PM, MARCH 30, 2018, BY BRIAN SANDLER

DALLAS -- Prior to 2009, Sean Lemoine says he knew nothing about West Nile Virus. A year later he was re-learning how to walk after contracting it.

Lemoine, a healthy 36-year-old at the time, was bitten by a mosquito while working in his yard. A few days later he had a fever, went to a doctor, and was told it was some sort of virus but nothing to worry about.

That all changed very quickly, and as part of the Dallas County Health and Human Services department's annual West Nile Virus awareness campaign kickoff, he recounted his story as a warning to others.

Why giving DHEC dead birds can help track West Nile virus in SC
    BY MICHAELA BROYLES

    Updated March 29, 2018 08:43 AM

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control wants any dead birds you might stumble across.

By submitting the dead birds to DHEC, it helps track West Nile virus in the state after officials perform tests on the birds.

"The dead bird surveillance program plays a key role in alerting the department to WNV activity across the state," said Chris Evans, a PhD State Public Health Entomologist with DHEC's Bureau of Environmental Health Services, in a news release. "The public's involvement with dead bird surveillance covers a wide area and helps identify West Nile virus before it shows up in people."

NEW YORK — The season’s first human case of West Nile virus in New York City was confirmed Friday by the city’s dealth department.

A Manhattan resident who is older than 50 was infected with mosquito-borne virus and hospitalized earlier this month with encephalitis, health officials said. He has since been discharged.

Typically, the virus is active between late July and October. This case marks the earliest diagnosis of West Nile virus reported in New York City since 1999, according to the NYC Health Department.
