Indiana reports first human West Nile virus case of 2018

INDIANAPOLIS ? Health officials are urging residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites after Indiana?s first human case of West Nile virus in 2018 was detected.

The Indiana State Department of Health says that the human case was confirmed Monday in Vanderburgh County and 168 mosquito samples in 27 Indiana counties have tested positive for the virus. Officials say they expect to continue to see increased West Nile activity throughout the state.

North Dakota Health Officials Report Steep Increase in West Nile Virus Cases

New Jersey's first human case of West Nile for 2018 has been confirmed in Hunterdon County, health officials said. Dawn Thomas, a spokesperson with the New Jersey Department of Health, said a 74-year-old man was confirmed to have contracted the virus. The man's town of residence was not disclosed due to privacy issues, she said.

"We are looking into other suspect cases in the state," Thomas said, noting she could not comment on those.

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) -- The first human case of West Nile Virus this year has been reported in Mobile County.

From the Mobile County Health Department:

"Earlier this week, it was announced a positive test result had come back for West Nile Virus (WNV) in the community. Because of a miscommunication issue, it was initially announced this was part of the sentinel chicken program used by the Mobile County Health Department (MCHD) to detect mosquito-borne diseases.

However, in fact this involved the first human case reported in Mobile County this year. Because of patient privacy rights under the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), no additional identifying information will be made available to the public.

PHOENIX ? The Arizona Department of Health Services said Monday it is investigating the first probable case of West Nile virus in Maricopa County this year.

There has been one confirmed case of the mosquito-borne disease in the state in 2018, in Pinal County. Neither Arizona case was fatal.

According to the latest statistics available for 2018, 20 mosquito pools in Maricopa County have tested positive for the virus. More than 6,000 pools were tested.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting the first human case of West Nile virus in Lyon County this year.

The Disease Control and Prevention Division at CCHHS oversees disease surveillance and investigations in Lyon County and is the agency monitoring the situation. The individual confirmed to have WNV was diagnosed with the less severe form of the illness. The exposure to WNV through mosquito bites occurred out of state.

This is the first human West Nile virus case to have been reported in the tri−county (Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County) area this year. The individual was identified to have WNV through the blood donation pre-screening process and was confirmed to have the less severe form of the illness.

First Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported in Wisconsin This Year
Health officials urge everyone to protect against mosquito bites
State and local health officials are advising residents to continue to protect themselves against mosquito bites due to the state's first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) this year. A resident of Dane County is the first person confirmed infected with the virus in the state in 2018.

The majority of WNV human cases in the state occur during the months of August and September. However, the risk of contracting WNV and other mosquito-borne illnesses is present anytime mosquitoes are active, so it is important for people to be vigilant about preventing mosquito bites throughout the summer and early fall.

In 2017, 51 human cases of WNV were reported in Wisconsin, the highest number since 2012. Eight of these cases occurred in Dane County, which was the highest number ever reported in the county.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — A person has died due to West Nile virus, the Salt Lake County Health Department announced Wednesday.

According to a press release from the health department, the deceased is an individual over the age of 65 who suffered from other health concerns and was diagnosed with “neuroinvasive West Nile virus”, which is a more severe form of the disease.

The health department says the individual died last week. Due to health privacy laws, no further details about the deceased are available.

Delaware reports second human case of West Nile Virus

DOVER, Del. — Public health officials have confirmed Delaware’s second human case of West Nile Virus this year.

Officials said Wednesday that the case involves a 68-year-old New Castle County man who was initially hospitalized in July due to illness. He remains hospitalized because of underlying health conditions that are not related to the virus.

Earlier this month, officials announced that a 60-year-old Sussex County man was the first person in Delaware to contract West Nile Virus this year.

LANSING, Mich. ? The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) today confirmed eight human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) for 2018. Eight cases of WNV have been confirmed; one resident of Berrien County, one resident of Kent County, one resident of Oakland County, and five residents of Wayne County including one death. All but one have been hospitalized with neurologic disease. In addition to the eight human cases, three Michigan blood donors have had WNV detected in their blood.

Jacksonville, FL - A case of West Nile Virus has now been confirmed in a human in Duval County and in Nassau County.

The Florida Department of Health says this case increases their concern for transmission of this mosquito-borne virus.

WOKV first told you early Thursday about the Duval County case. Nassau County?s Health Department issued a similar notice only a couple of hours later.

Third Case of West Nile Confirmed in Bay County

Panama City, Fla. - The Department of Health in Bay County has confirmed another human case of West Nile Virus infection in Bay County.

"This additional human case increases the concern for transmission," officials wrote in a news release.

In late July, officials issued a mosquito-borne illness alert following confirmation of two human cases of West Nile Virus in Bay County. Panama City Beach Mosquito Control, Bay County Mosquito Control and DOH-Bay continue surveillance and prevention efforts.

Authorities have confirmed a human case of West Nile Virus in Clear Creek County ? the first since 2003.

This is the 12th case of the virus in Colorado in 2018, including six in Larimer County. There's also been three in Weld County, and one each in Delta and Washington counties.

2 people infected with West Nile in New Orleans, according to health officials

Two people in New Orleans have tested positive for West Nile virus health officials confirmed on Friday (Aug. 24).

One developed West Nile fever, a viral infection similar to a flu. The other person developed neuroinvasive disease, a more serious form of the virus causing infection in the brain and spinal cord, health officials said.

Both residents developed symptoms the week of July 30.

These are the first WNV positive sentinel chickens from Lake, Shasta, and Yuba counties this year. This is the first indication of WNV from Colusa County this year.

The first two cases were residents of Fairfield and Newington.

The patient is between the ages of 70 to 79 years old.

A Kent County resident who was hospitalized with West Nile Virus has died due to complications of the illness, the county health department reported Monday.


The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services had confirmed Thursday that the state had had eight recorded human cases of West Nile virus in 2018 along with one death in Wayne County. The death in Kent County marks the second in the state.

A Maine resident has tested positive for the West Nile virus, the Maine Center for Disease and Prevention said Monday.

The report said a person from Cumberland County tested positive for the virus, but the report did not specify what town. The results were collected Aug. 15.

The Maine CDC said the patient likely acquired the disease out of state. This is the first positive West Nile case in a Maine resident in 2018.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports three new human cases of West Nile virus, bringing the state?s total to 26 so far for 2018.

The reported cases are in Hinds, Harrison and Walthall counties.

BRIGHAM CITY ? Officials on Monday confirmed a human case of West Nile Virus in Box Elder County, according to a news release from the Box Elder Mosquito Abatement District.

"We want the county to be aware that September has shown to be a very active month for West Nile Virus. Please continue to take precautions," according to the release.

Sixteen mosquito samples in the county have tested positive for the virus, the release states. And the virus "could be more widespread at this point," according to the abatement district.

A Mesa County resident has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This is the first human case identified in Mesa County since 2015. The case follows an increase in Culex mosquitoes ? the type of mosquito that carries WNV ? in Mesa County.

?We work with the Grand River Mosquito Control District to monitor mosquito populations in our community. We?ve seen more Culex mosquitoes this year than in the past three years,? Epidemiology Program Manager Heidi Dragoo said.

?This human case of West Nile virus serves as a reminder to our community that although we were fortunate to see two years without any of the illness in humans, it?s still in Mesa County and can still affect our residents.?

Lake County reports first 2018 West Nile infection

Lake County last week joined the list of counties in South Dakota this summer in which a resident was officially diagnosed with West Nile virus.

The South Dakota Department of Health released its Wednesday weekly report for West Nile virus that showed 56 human cases of the disease so far in 2018. Last week's WNV report included 17 hospitalizations for more-severe infections and two deaths. According to Dr. Joshua Clayton, state epidemiologist, the two West Nile virus-related deaths occurred in Brown and Brule counties.

WYOMING ? Wyoming?s first reported West Nile virus case for 2018 involves a Fremont County adult, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH).

Since WNV first appeared in Wyoming in 2002 the number of reported human cases has varied widely from year to year.

And, in another case related to mosquitoes, someone died from a rare form of encephalitis, the Georgia Department of Public Health said.

A child for Newington was among the new cases of West Nile Virus reported this week, the state Department of Public Heath said Wednesday.

State officials said the child was between 5 and 10 years old and became ill with a fever and headache earlier this month. The child was not hospitalized.

The child from Newington was among the five confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne virus this year, according to the DPH. A person from Monroe between 50 and 60 years old was also found to have contracted the virus during the same period, officials siad.
