First Human West Nile Virus Death In Illinois For 2018

SPRINGFIELD ? The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus-related death in Illinois for 2018. A LaSalle County resident over 65 years who became ill during the first part of August and tested positive for West Nile virus has died.

?Although we?re moving toward the end of summer, West Nile virus remains a risk until the first hard frost,? said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. ?It?s important for everyone to continue taking precautions like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, and staying indoors between dusk and dawn.?

Last year IDPH reported the first human West Nile virus death in Illinois on September 29, 2017. During 2017, there were 90 human West Nile virus cases, including eight deaths. IDPH is currently reporting 22 human cases. West Nile virus positive results in humans, birds, mosquitoes, and/or horses have been reported in 58 counties this year.

​The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) today announced the second reported case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in a Boston resident, a male in his 50s. The announcement comes after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health raised the risk level for WNV from moderate to high in Greater Boston communities earlier this week.

This is Boston's second confirmed human case of WNV this year, bringing the total number of reported cases in Massachusetts to five this year. In the past two years, there was one reported human case in Boston.

City and health department officials are again urging residents to take precautions with mosquitoes following a downtown Tuscaloosa resident?s recent diagnosis of West Nile virus.

A man living in Audubon Place was diagnosed with the illness in late August, and this prompted Original City Association President Kelly Fitts to send out an email alerting her neighbors.

Fitts said the diagnosis of her neighbor, who is now recovering at home, led her to warn downtown residents out of precaution.

The Dallas County Health Department has notified the City that a Richardson resident has been diagnosed with the neuroinvasive form of the West Nile virus. The resident lives near the intersection of Custer Road and West Campbell Road, within the area that had a positive mosquito sample last week and was sprayed by Health Department staff Thursday night. There was no spraying Friday night due to rain.

ROCHESTER, NY (WXXI) ? A Monroe County resident has died from West Nile virus. It?s the only death from the disease in New York state so far this year, according to the most recent data

Only two other counties in the state outside of New York City, where data is tracked separately, have documented a case of the virus this year. Both of those are downstate counties, with one reported case each.
At this time in last year?s season, no one in Monroe County had been diagnosed with West Nile virus. This season, there have been two.

TOWN OF BABYLON, NY - The first human case of West Nile Virus in Suffolk County was reported in a Town of Babylon resident, Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Services Dr. James Tomarken announced on Wednesday.

The individual, who is over the age of 55, has been hospitalized since August 19 with symptoms consistent with West Nile virus fever.

Mosquito season is likely to continue for at least a few more weeks. "We expect these numbers to rise," said Ann Garvey, the department's deputy epidemiologist.

2nd Death From West Nile Reported In Illinois
A total of 63 human cases have been reported this year across the state.

ILLINOIS ? Less than a month after the first West Nile virus-related death was reported in Illinois, the Illinois Department of Public Health said a second person has also died. The latest data released by IDPH shows a total of 63 human cases, but does not specify where the second death occurred.

The first person to die from the mosquito-borne illness was a 65-year-old resident of LaSalle County, who became ill in early August. As of late August, only 22 human cases of the illness had been reported, meaning an additional 41 cases have been confirmed since then, according to IDPH.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed that Pennsylvania has had two human deaths due to West Nile Virus.

Department spokesman Nate Wardle told Lancaster Online on Friday one death was in Lancaster County and the other was in Lebanon County. Wardle told the media outlet that the department was unable to provide further details due to privacy.

However, Lancaster Online reported that an obit it ran for Harlan H. Hoover, 81, of Gordonville, indicated he died Sept. 17 at Lancaster General Hospital "after contracting West Nile virus."

Philadelphia reports 11 human West Nile virus cases since August

Of the 11 cases, health officials say 10 are neuroinvasive cases. Eight neuroinvasive cases were residents >50 years of age, and the remaining two were an immunocompromised 49 year-old, and a healthy 35 year-old.

West Nile virus cases have hit the second highest number since the mosquito-born virus was identified in Iowa in 2002. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports 73 cases of West Nile virus are under investigation. The highest year was 2003, when Iowa had 147 cases.

A second death in Bergen County due to West Nile virus was reported this week as cases of the virus are reaching record highs.

"The number of human West Nile Virus cases is the highest we?ve seen since 2012, and the season is not over yet," said New Jersey Health Commissioner Shereef Elnahal in a press release Monday. "The pattern of hot and wet weather this summer has led to an increase in mosquito populations and associated viruses."

An elderly woman from Bergen County died this month, following the death of a 62-year-old man from Lodi earlier in September.

The city of Plano plans to spray three areas Monday after the second person to contract West Nile virus this year in city limits was identified, and two more city mosquito traps returned specimens carrying the virus.

State health officials announced Monday that four new cases have been reported, bringing the statewide total for 2018 to 37. Three of the new cases were reported in Hinds County and one in Madison County.

Hinds County has had the most reported cases of West Nile virus in the state with 15, health officials said. Two cases each have been reported in Adams, Calhoun, Forrest, Harrison, Madison and Rankin counties.
