GCHD confirms first human West Nile virus case of 2018

The Galveston County Health District (GCHD) has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) of 2018 in Galveston County.

The female patient, ranging in age from 20-29, is a resident of Galveston Island. She received treatment for West Nile Fever and has recovered. To protect medical privacy, no other information about the patient will be made available.

GCHD has notified Galveston County Mosquito Control of the confirmed case of mosquito-borne illness so that the agency may factor that into its surveillance and spraying efforts, if needed. The most recent cases of human WNV in Galveston County were six confirmed cases in 2016.

State health officials are encouraging residents and visitors to take precautions to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses following the death of a North Carolina resident from West Nile virus infection last week. This is the state's first death from and first confirmed case of West Nile virus in 2018.

Cumberland County man dies from West Nile virus

An elderly man in Cumberland County has died from the West Nile virus, county officials said today.

His death is the first in the state this year due to the disease.

The man's identity was not released. The county Health Department doesn’t have any details about him, according to a statement released today by the county.

Mississippi Reports Second West Nile Virus Human Case of 2018

So far this year cases have been reported in Hinds and Pearl River counties. In 2017, Mississippi had 63 WNV cases and two deaths.

Officials in Ascension Parish announced on Monday there's a report of West Nile in a human.

The Ascension Parish Mosquito Control Department reported a case of the virus in the St. Amant area. The parish government said the area received additional treatment after the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the case.

Aurora woman diagnosed with West Nile after trip to Wisconsin Dells

A woman has been diagnosed with West Nile Virus in west suburban Aurora.

The 38-year-old checked in to the emergency room at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora on July 5 with symptoms including headaches, fever, nausea and diarrhea and was recently diagnosed with the disease, according to the Will County Health Department.


The woman told authorities she was in the Wisconsin Dells about one week before her symptoms started, the department said.

Environmental Health Director Rob Kostlivy shares that last Friday he received notification of what he is describing as an isolated case. The first confirmed report of human West Nile virus in Galveston County this year is now considered negative, according to the Department of State Health Services.

The change in status came Tuesday -- just two weeks after Galveston County Health District reported the county?s first human West Nile virus case as positive July 17 after initial confirmation by DSHS.

However, DSHS confirmed that further testing at the state lab shows the specimen is actually negative for West Nile virus and St. Louis Encephalitis virus, both mosquito-borne viruses.

Despite a Lymphoma diagnosis a few years ago, 81-year-old Chillicothe resident Clyde "Smiley" Warth was otherwise extremely active. According to his daughter, Marcia Warth, the man was riding his motorcycle into his 80s. He liked to work around his house and visit loved ones, she said.

The American News reports that Joshua Clayton, state epidemiologist, said Tuesday that a woman in her 80s had died. As of last Thursday, there were two people with confirmed cases in Buffalo and Minnehaha counties. People who donated blood tested positive for West Nile in six counties.

WELD COUNTY ? A resident in Mead has been hospitalized with a neuro-invasive form of West Nile Virus ? the most serious form of the illness, according to a release from the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment.

The resident started to feel ill on July 27 and was hospitalized the next day, the release said. Test results later confirmed that West Nile virus was the culprit.

West Nile virus kills central Iowan, draws renewed warning about mosquitoes

An elderly central Iowa resident has died from a West Nile virus infection, state officials said Friday.

The unidentified resident?s death is the first that the mosquito-borne virus has caused in Iowa this year. Iowa Department of Public Health experts said a second person, a man from Palo Alto County in northern Iowa, recently became ill with the virus but has recovered.

Mississippi Reports Six New West Nile Virus Human Cases

JACKSON, Miss. ? Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports six new human cases of West Nile virus (WNV), bringing the state?s total to 13 so far for 2018. The reported cases are in Adams, Forrest, Hinds (2), Marion, and Oktibbeha counties.

So far this year human cases have been reported in Adams, Copiah, Forrest, Hinds (6), Itawamba, Marion, Oktibbeha, and Pearl River counties. In 2017, Mississippi had 63 WNV cases and two deaths.

Douglas County Has First 2018 West Nile Case

The first human case of West Nile Virus in Douglas County for 2018 has been confirmed. A woman over 50 years of age was hospitalized and has been released.

In addition to the human case, high populations of mosquitoes and multiple pools of infected mosquitoes have been found at a monitoring site between downtown Omaha and Eppley Airfield. Late summer and early fall are typically when West Nile virus cases begin to increase.

Two human cases of West Nile virus reported in Colorado

Two human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Colorado, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The cases were reported in Weld County in northern Colorado and Delta County in western Colorado. They're the first human cases to be reported in the state this year.

Dallas County Health and Human Services reports the first West Nile-associated death in the county this year.

Officials said an adult with "underlying medical conditions" died after previously contracting the West Nile neuroinvasive disease.The patient lived in the 75229 zip code.
