First West Nile-Related Death Reported for 2016 in Orange County

SANTA ANA, Calif. - Orange County health officials reported the area's first West Nile-related death of the year on Wednesday.

A La Habra woman in her 60s died of infection complications, according to the Orange County Health Care Agency. It did not identify the woman or say when she died.

Orange County this year has had 29 cases of West Nile Virus infections, and all but one patient was hospitalized.

DES MOINES ? State health officials announced Tuesday that an elderly person in northwest Iowa has died from West Nile virus, marking the first death due to exposure to the virus since 2010.

In making the announcement, officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health only identified the victim as an elderly individual who was 81 years of age or older. The department said testing at the State Hygienic Laboratory has confirmed 33 cases of West Nile virus in Iowa, with several more under investigation ? more than double the number of cases reported last year at this time.

[FONT=&quot]The Louisiana Department of Health is reporting six additional cases of West Nile virus in the state. There are no additional reported cases of Zika virus for this week. This brings the total West Nile virus cases to 36, with the Zika virus count remaining at 34 cases in 2016.

Of the West Nile virus cases, three were asymptomatic; 12 were fever cases, a mild illness; and 21 were neuroinvasive disease, a severe illness that can lead to brain damage and death. Additionally, the department has learned of the first death related to West Nile virus in 2016. In order to protect patient privacy, the Louisiana Department of Health does not report West Nile deaths by parish.
