LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? Authorities in LA County say two deaths reported there can be attributed to West Nile virus.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed the first deaths due to West Nile this year in LA County. (Cases in Long Beach and Pasadena are identified by their local health departments).

Officials said the two victi ms were both elderly males from the San Fernando Valley, both hospitalized in August and died from WNV-associated encephalitis.

The Cabinet for Health and Family services confirmed Wednesday that a 73-year-old Louisville man died from the West Nile Virus.

Beth Fisher, spokeswoman for the cabinet, said this is the first death from West Nile reported in the state this year.

A San Marcos woman died on September 15 from a probable case of West Nile virus, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

Although the woman had underlying medical conditions, initial tests indicate West Nile virus was the probable cause of death, the first this season of a county resident. The California Department of Public Health will confirm the local test findings.

?The unfortunate death of this woman is a reminder that the public should take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, which transmit West Nile and other viruses,? said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) received confirmation September 20 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Rhode Island in 2016. A 49-year-old Pawtucket resident was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis caused by WNV on August 12th and was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital that same day. State epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger tsays the Butte County resident died earlier this month. He says the person was in the 70s age group.

BOSTON ?Two more people in Massachusetts have been diagnosed with West Nile virus, Massachusetts Department of Public Health officials announced Friday.

A Norfolk County resident in her 40s developed a milder form of the disease. She was never hospitalized. The other resident, from Middlesex County, is in his 80s and was hospitalized but has been discharged.

They are the fourth and fifth cases of the disease this season.

First 2016 Human West Nile Virus Deaths in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD ? The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the three human West Nile virus-related deaths in Illinois for 2016. Three individuals in Cook County tested positive for West Nile virus earlier this month and have died.

?Although fall has begun and temperatures are becoming cooler, West Nile virus is still a concern,? said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. ?It?s important for everyone to continue taking precautions like wearing insect repellent and staying indoors between dusk and dawn.?

IDPH reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Illinois this year on June 6, 2016 and IDPH is currently reporting 64 human cases. Last year there were 77 human cases, including nine deaths.

A 65-year-old man has been confirmed as Camden County?s second human case of West Nile virus this year, government officials confirmed Tuesday.

Officials say the man was admitted to a Camden County hospital Sept. 12 after experiencing typical symptoms of the mosquito-borne infection. He was then transferred to a Pennsylvania hospital for additional treatment on Sept. 20.

SHERMAN, Texas -- The Grayson County Health Department confirmed Friday the county's first death from West Nile virus.

An adult female residing in Grayson County died.

She is the first reported WNV related death in Grayson County since the Grayson County Health Department began reporting human cases of WNV in late 2012.
