NEW YORK — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says two people are hospitalized with suspected swine flu.
City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden also said Tuesday that "many hundreds" of schoolchildren are sick with suspected cases of swine flu.
Bloomberg says the hospitalizations are separate from the outbreak at a private school in Queens.
If they are found to be swine flu they would be the first in the U.S. connected to the outbreak.
The mayor says the hospitalized are a child in the Bronx and an adult in Brooklyn.

The human swine flu outbreak continues to grow in the United States and internationally," the CDC said in its latest bulletin. "Today, CDC reports additional cases of confirmed swine influenza and a number of hospitalizations of swine flu patients.

Ohio has 3 new secondary suspect cases.....

Excerpt from article at - http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=112475&catid=329

Officials said that, in the past 24 hours, three more Lorain County residents have tested positive for an "A" variant of influenza. One adult and one child are at Amherst Hospital and another child is at St. John's Westshore Hospital, according to Emergency Management officials. Samples from all three suspected cases have been taken to the Ohio Department of Health to test if the influenza is the H1N1 strain.

Re: US Hospitalizations by State

I guess I should add that I actually telephoned the Television station that did the report. They basically read it off a local wire. I called one of the hospitals who refferred me to their newsmedia department, who put me on hold while she called someone, and she basically got back to me and said that nothing had been reported to them directly by either hospital - but that that didn't necessarily mean anything. So a possibility is also that they were "Tested" at the hospital - not admitted. Just don't know.

Most people will not have immunity to this new virus and, as it continues to spread, more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths are expected in the coming days and weeks 4/29/09 http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

Re: US Hospitalizations by State

Is this a different infant - the one that died is reported to have died in Houston.
This is not in my TX count yet......

According to a news release from the hospital, the patient, a 23-month-old child, arrived at Methodist on Saturday and is in isolation.

The child was transferred from a Brownsville medical facility to a Harlingen hospital and then eventually to Methodist. The child was gravely ill when brought to San Antonio, but the child's condition has now been stabilized.

Re: US Hospitalizations by State

Re: US Hospitalizations by State

According to what we have seen from local media, the child who died was admitted to Texas Children's Hospital (as I suspected and feared, I have a daughter with cystic fibrosis who has her clinics at that hospital). I have no verifiable confirmation of that, however. I believe that the child came to Houston over a week ago, so this sounds like it might be different, especially given ksat sounds like a station in San Antonio, it is definitely not a Houston station, although we do have a Methodist Hospital here as well.

What I do know about the child that died is s/he was from Mexico and visiting family in Brownsville when s/he got sick.

Not finding any new hospitalizations today. Realize that due to patient confidentiality requirements, this information will be made public primarily by gov or families. Healthprofessionals -do not be tempted to report cases and break confidentiality. We should obtain this information from public sources only therefore I won't add any cases unless a source link is attached. By my count we are at 8-9 known hospitalizations - still working out the child mentioned above.

Thanks for checking. At FT we often see conflicting information from news media especially when the situation is fluid and fluctuating. Your efforts show that once again seeing something in a printed news report or a television report doesn't mean that it is true or has been validated.

Re: US Hospitalizations:Deaths by state

It is disturbing ( I would use "cause for concern" however that's Dr. Niman's) that:
1) CDC isn't posting their weekly surveillance report which was due out today. It would have listed the influenza associated hospitalizations and deaths among the vast amt of data that usually is listed weekly.
2) TX's isn't among the standard CDC EIP Influenza Project surveillance process for laboratory-confirmed influenza related hospitalizations in children (persons less than 18 years) and adults in 60 counties covering 12 metropolitan areas of 10 states (San Francisco CA, Denver CO, New Haven CT, Atlanta GA, Baltimore MD, Minneapolis/St. Paul MN, Albuquerque NM, Las Cruces, NM, Albany NY, Rochester NY, Portland OR, and Nashville TN).

Excerpt:

The Influenza Division is in the process of updating their existing surveillance systems in response to the outbreak caused by influenza H1N1 swine virus to provide more timely data. The weekly surveillance report (FluView) for week 16 (week ending April 25, 2009) will not be posted Friday, May 1, 2009. The most current information on the influenza H1N1 swine virus investigation is available at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.
Influenza-Associated Hospitalizations

Laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations are monitored in two population-based surveillance networks: the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) and the New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN). These two systems provide updates of surveillance data every two weeks.
During October 12, 2008 to April 4, 2009, the preliminary laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalization rate for children 0-4 years old in the NVSN was 2.87 per 10,000. Because of case identification methods utilized in this study, a delay exists from the date of hospitalization to the date of report.

4. Hospitalization Surveillance — Two systems monitor hospitalizations with laboratory confirmed influenza infections.

  • Emerging Infections Program (EIP) — The EIP Influenza Project conducts surveillance for laboratory-confirmed influenza related hospitalizations in children (persons less than 18 years) and adults in 60 counties covering 12 metropolitan areas of 10 states (San Francisco CA, Denver CO, New Haven CT, Atlanta GA, Baltimore MD, Minneapolis/St. Paul MN, Albuquerque NM, Las Cruces, NM, Albany NY, Rochester NY, Portland OR, and Nashville TN). Cases are identified by reviewing hospital laboratory and admission databases and infection control logs for children and adults with a documented positive influenza test (viral culture, direct/indirect fluorescent antibody assay (DFA/IFA), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), or a commercial rapid antigen test) conducted as a part of routine patient care. EIP estimated hospitalization rates are reported every two weeks during the influenza season.
  • New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN) — The New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN) provides population-based estimates of laboratory-confirmed influenza hospitalization rates for children less than 5 years old residing in three counties: Hamilton County OH, Davidson County TN, and Monroe County NY. Children admitted to NVSN hospitals with fever or respiratory symptoms are prospectively enrolled and respiratory samples are collected and tested by RT-PCR and viral culture. NVSN estimated rates are reported every two weeks during the influenza season. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/fluactivity.htm

Re: US Hospitalizations:Deaths by state

At FT were exposed the future failure of harvesting true GP/hospital insurgence of cases and their number because of the existing and now hardened laws in a case of emergency/pandemic.

So, from the field would be/is an embargo to divulagte such nes, which are subject to classification until the public relations release them - so the population could not itself make an estimation, only off record, with at the field witnesses, or by deep throats.

Two teens from one of the schools are in intensive care, suspected of contracting H1N1.Two teens are in serious but stable condition at Madigan Army Medical Center. The other teen was released. However, tests confirmed late Friday afternoon that the two hospitalized students do not have swine flu.
Superintendent Debbie LeBeau said the closure was a precaution. She will decide over the weekend whether Lakes will reopen Monday. "For me it makes sense to close the school for a day to prevent other students and staff from getting what could be the human swine flu," said LeBeau. "As test results come back this weekend, I will make the decision whether the school will be open on Monday or remain closed." tks contributor Terrafirma
