Ukraine War discussion - Threat to Public Health

A Putin claim is the same as a Zelensky claim. Neither are credible at this point. I do not want to carry any of their propaganda. As I said above nowhere does any of Zelensky's claims about Russian soldiers' death counts appear on FT. I was going to keep a loose tally of total deaths but the claims by both sides are not believable.

Alexei Mechkov, Russian Ambassador to France: "I don't want nuclear war"

Alexei Mechkov, Russian Ambassador to France, was the guest of BFMTV this Wednesday evening

Do you personally fear a nuclear conflict, is nuclear power one of the factors of this war or do you rule it out completely?

You know I have four children, two grandchildren so I don't want a nuclear war and President Poutin, he didn't talk about it with President Macron, no. One of your ministers said that Russia should not forget the fact that France was a nuclear power, this is true.

But you, do you fear a nuclear war?

I think every person in the world somehow dreads a nuclear war because a nuclear war will make our civilization simply disappear. There can't be, you know, a small local nuclear war.

There are eyewitness and credible reports that the nuclear power station at Chernobyl has been rigged with explosives by Russian troops. The power was cut to the site some 5 days ago, or so, and is reported to have been restored yesterday by Belarusian military. The implications of an explosion here are awful!

I am surprised that there is not much further discussion on the site of the fact that Russian spokespeople have raised the issue of biological warfare. There is historical discussion of the development of this type of weapon by Russia from 2018 https://www.unian.info/politics/101...bola-smallpox-virus-mix-ukraine-suggests.html.

The threat is something we should address IMO. If smallpox was involved in warfare - it is aerosol and does not show symptoms for 10 to 12 days. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-smallpox-threat-how-serious/
Henderson says that smallpox is "one of the worst diseases known to man. You feel perfectly well for about 10 days to 12 days after you are infected with the virus." Victims don’t know they have it.

There are also reports that the virus can be disseminated by missile strike. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC81649/ From 2001.

Whatever the threat - that seems to mainly concern Europe at this stage - perhaps it is worth considering updating your preps and reading this https://www.ready.gov/nuclear-explosion

From the Russian side they have expressed concern that US funded BSL labs in Ukraine were cover for a Biological weapons threat.
Neither of these claims are verifiable or credible, both the US and Russia have more than enough BSL3 and 4 labs to develop a bio weapon if they wished to do so but it is a useless weapon as it is not targetable.

There is some discussion and I updated our Nuclear Radiation Emergencies forum on February 24 with the latest CDC guidances:
https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum...on-response/cdc/nuclear-radiation-emergencies

The problem that I am having is that almost nothing is credible. IMHO the US media is AGAIN steering the news to their point of view. Any objective reporting died a long time ago.

As far as the Russian media goes - forget it. It is all a government outlet. I am reading those sites everyday and their claims are ridiculous. Completely untrustworthy. I am posting some of the measures they are taking economically which gives a small insight into the conditions there.

So - basically look at your own situation and weight your options. It is always good to be prepared.

Someone who lives in Western Europe asked me what I thought about leaving. Well, I am not there so I can not really assess that situation. I think people should have "markers". This is saying to yourself, "If this event XYZ happens we pack, and if a further event XYZ2 happens we leave." I do this for approaching hurricanes, weighing the path and wind speed.

I really hope that sane minds prevail and stop any further escalation.

I'm a little stumped here by some of the threats being reported. It seems Russia's goal in this war is to turn some/most/all of Ukraine into either Russian territory or territory ruled by an allied government, and to turn most of the Ukrainian people into citizens of Russia or that government. Some of the actions reported by the Russian army above are inconsistent with that goal.

Russia has, and has had for at least 60 years, the ability to deliver a thermonuclear weapon to pretty much any point on the planet at a few moments notice. The result of doing that would be a nuclear war and the infamous mutually assured destruction (MAD) of most of humanity. There are several things reported above that the Russian army or government has done or is threatening to do that are more difficult than using that nuke, while being at least as destructive and also less productive. I include in that list:

- Using conventional explosives to blow up a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, in Russia, in the US, or anywhere else in the world.
- Releasing the smallpox virus anywhere in the world
- Releasing any KNOWN Soviet bioweapon anywhere in the world. (There is some debate via plausible deniability over the use of a previously unknown bioweapon.)
- Releasing an obviously unnatural virus such as an Ebola/smallpox hybrid anywhere in the world
- Attacking any NATO member country.

On top of that, there is discussion of actions the Russians might be doing that while not as severe as the above ones and which might not trigger MAD, but would make a Russian administration of parts/all of Ukraine more difficult. These include:

- Bombing hospitals in Ukraine.
- Using chemical weapons on Ukraine.
- Destroying the electrical power infrastructure of Ukraine.

Any of these will make a post-Russian-victory Ukraine much more difficult to run. So what are the Russians actually doing? I refuse to believe any of the above actions or threats are due to gross incompetence.

There might be some value in controlling the nuclear power plants to prevent a rogue non-state actor from using nuclear materials to build a dirty bomb and using it against Russia. But if that's all the Russians are concerned about there, just state that, and even NATO would help them prevent that from happening. So that doesn't seem like the motivation here either.

Russia's stated aim is to stop Ukraine from becoming a base for NATO offensive weapons it can achieve this by trashing the place and destroying the hardware already shipped there from NATO.

The NATO hardware, sure. But the power plants? Or the hospitals? Or risking a radiological or biological catastrophe? I don't see any of those things in Russia's interests. If the goal was to trash the place, Russia could have already nuked it without having to invade it.

How about the citizens of Ukraine have a referendum with strict supervision by the international community in which they can choose who leads them? We can avoid all this death and destruction. Seems the people should be able to decide. If they end up politically more Russian-like or more pro-West then the other side has to accept this.

If you did that in Russia, you'd have a very different government as well. This has never been about the will of the people in any country.

Alert if they nuked the place we would have WW3. Taking control of power plants would be a military objective and I have seen no evidence any danger of nuclear or biological risks apart from in the media or from the Ukrainian government who have an obvious agenda. It is very difficult to get any clear picture of what is actually happening photographs of buildings tell what ever story you want to paint the Ukrainian side shows a destroyed highrises the Russian side shows people firing Stinger missiles from the roof tops this is a war which comes with collateral damage like any other.

Sharon they did have two democratic elections in which the pro-west candidate lost, in the first the loosers cried 'rigged' and re ran it and then there guy won, in the second - with the same two candidates - the West's candidate lost but 4 years later the President decided not to join the EU and there was a coup, the President was overthrown and the pro-West pro-Ethnic Ukrainians took power prompting Crimea, LPR & DPR to split from the new regime. Ukraine has a major corruption problem and very different populations in the East and the West, much worse than the US's red/blue state split, it can not align with either the EU/NATO or Russia without a major domestic problem from one block or the other.

Then run the new, fair, monitored elections by each oblast. Each one can decide. It might be that a few break off and go to the Russia side. The people in those oblasts can get some type of re-settlement $ to start over in the pro-West side if they do not want to become part of Russia. Bottom line is that this fighting has got to stop. It is against human rights to militarily invade a neighbor. Russia is going way beyond those disputed oblast in the east.

I have been following Peter Daszak's twitter account since March 1st. I find his posts regarding the war and the effects on his very talented family, to be very touching.

...The moving sound of my nephew and his mother in happier times. He is now in Kyiv with a Kalashnikov ready to fight for his country, facing the convoy that’s bearing down on Kyiv. Please listen, and do what you can to help end this madness. ...

I hope that renders the whole issue mute: both sides having BSL labs. It is a terrifying prospect to imagine this could erupt into some sort of biological agent escape or intentional leak.

We are fast approaching this scenario. Russia is very close to Lviv, and already an apparently armed drone crashed in Zagreb. Croatia will be in the US next week seeking the Patriot Defense System. Plenković will visit the NATO base near Madrid on Wednesday and meet with its commander in connection with aviation control. They are understandably worried. This could be used by hawks to support their case for a no-fly zone, at least around Lviv. That is what will trigger a nuclear exchange per the simulation.
