Here is Putin taking about hypersonic weapons the US wants to put in Ukraine directed at Russia.
Re reminds of western military actions breaking international law in Yugoslavia and Iraq.
He asks to resolve this issue with legal guarantees the Ukraine will not be used as a proxy to fight a war with Russia.
I post this as a perspective and to underscore how complex this situation is.
Here in France, people are well aware of the missteps on both sides of this conflict. Many here tend to blame both the US, the EU, and NATO for this conflict, and Russia for taking the bait. According to Putin, he had no choice. No where to retreat to. Listen to his speech from January 2022.
Someone here explained it to me this way:
Imagine Texas breaks away from the US and gains Russian support who then sends troops to the border between the US and Texas. Russia decides to use Texas for its military installations against US aggression and asks Texas to join an alliance with other eastern nations that will defend it against any US intervention. Russia then moves to make Texas part of this military alliance. They intend to set up more military bases and deploy missiles aimed at the US. To head off the military buildup, the US sends troops to the border with Texan and later invades to recapture Texas, many of whom identify as American, in attempt to protect the US from the threat of Russian attack.

President Putin framed it as the sequel to the Second World War – a new struggle against Fascism on Russia's border, which threatened the country's very existence.

Many analysts are missing this. They are the same people who missed that Russia would invade, because they ignored President Putin's words then too.

That is the *thesis of the conflict* from President Putin's perspective.
To understand what Putin will do, you have to look at the war through through his eyes – even if his vision is distorted.

The Chechens fought even harder than the Ukrainians.
They inflicted horrifying losses on the Russian army, against all odds.

What did it get them? A Russian siege of their capital that laid it to waste.
This was Grozny after the war. This is what so much Chechen bravery achieved.
If the Ukrainians keep fighting hard, it's what will happen to Kiev. All while we cheer them on from the sidelines.

So what is the Azov regiment?
Azov is a far-right all-volunteer infantry military unit whose members – estimated at 900 – are ultra-nationalists and accused of harbouring neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideology.
The unit was initially formed as a volunteer group in May 2014 out of the ultra-nationalist Patriot of Ukraine gang, and the neo-Nazi Social National Assembly (SNA) group. Both groups engaged in xenophobic and neo-Nazi ideals and physically assaulted migrants, the Roma community and people opposing their views.
As a battalion, the group fought on the front lines against pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk, the eastern region of Ukraine. Just before launching the invasion, Putin recognised the independence of two rebel-held regions from Donbas.
A few months after recapturing the strategic port city of Mariupol from the Russian-backed separatists, the unit was officially integrated into the National Guard of Ukraine on November 12, 2014, and exacted high praise from then-President Petro Poroshenko.
“These are our best warriors,” he said at an awards ceremony in 2014. “Our best volunteers.”
Who founded Azov?

Neo-Nazi ideology
