UK: 607 confirmed fatalities due to influenza

NHS 24 issue apology after swine flu woman collapse at home

A SWINE flu victim has had a personal apology from the boss of NHS 24 for advice she said could have killed her.

Jane Howie, 40, collapsed in her home on Christmas Day last year after being ill for more than a week. She broke her ankle and lay unconscious for 15 hours.

When she came round, she rang NHS 24 to ask for an ambulance, explaining what had happened and that her lips were blue and her foot was white and cold to touch.

But she was told the ambulance service was busy with life-threatening calls.

Jane, who lives in a first floor flat, was told to make her own way to hospital.

She dialled 999 and an ambulance arrived within minutes. Paramedics found her blood pressure was dangerously low.

In hospital, she was diagnosed with the H1N1 virus and tests also revealed kidney damage.

Jane, of Dalkeith, Midlothian, spent four days in isolation in a high dependency unit before being sent home to recover.

She said: "If I had listened to the NHS 24 advice, the consequences could have been fatal."

She complained to NHS 24 bosses and chief executive John Turner has admitted her call was dealt with "in an inappropriate manner".

Offering a full apology, he said the call handler failed to give the NHS 24 senior nurse enough information.

He added that they "have taken steps to ensure there can be no reoccurence of this situation in the future".

My swine flu hell turned to joy when I woke and saw my new baby boy, says Annmarie McPhee

HAVING a baby is meant to be one of the happiest times of your life - but for pregnant Annemarie McPhee it was a battle for survival.

She was in a coma with swine flu and missed the birth of her child, who was delivered five weeks early by Caesarean section on Hogmanay.

When Annemarie finally woke up two-and-a-half weeks later, she discovered she'd had a healthy baby boy when she saw photos of him taped to the end of her hospital bed.

Annemarie said: "I don't remember being surprised. I just remember thinking he must be my son.

"Somehow I knew I had a son. I hadn't known while I was pregnant if I was having a boy or a girl but everyone had been talking to me while I was in a coma, so maybe the news got through."

Inquest jury?s task to unravel London mom?s death

Laura Straughan, 25, was a London mother of two young children with no criminal record, but some recent brushes with the law.

After her arrest in November 2009 for assault, she complained several times of feeling ill.

Once, unable to be awakened, she was taken to hospital where a doctor cleared her return to custody.

Nurses at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) also checked her out. Corrections staff kept an eye on her.

But only five days after her arrest, she was taken to hospital again ? and declared dead.

A coroner?s inquest jury began Monday trying to figure out how a young woman could so quickly plummet into fatal pneumonia brought on by H1N1 flu while under the care of police, health care and corrections workers.
