Sussex baby girl in 'terrifying' flu ordeal

The Sussex parents of 14-month-old baby who spent five days in hospital after suffering a reaction to swine flu have described the ordeal as "terrifying".

Elspeth Hill was admitted to Eastbourne District General Hospital on New Year's Eve with swelling on the brain.

Doctors told her parents, Nichola and Gordon Hill, that Elspeth had suffered a very rare reaction to the virus.

Mrs Hill said her daughter's face when she was at her most ill would stay with her forever.

The 37-year-old mother from Langney Point said: "My husband found Elspeth in the morning. I thought at first she was just overly tired. But he picked her up and she was all floppy and wasn't responding when we said her name."

She said her first thought was that her daughter had meningitis.

Swine flu outbreak kills two

SWINE flu has claimed its second victim at Eastbourne District General Hospital, the Gazette understands.

A 39-year-old woman died on New Year?s Day, and the deadly virus has killed another.

DGH staff said a 42-year-old patient has also succumbed to swine flu ? the only two deaths from the virus in Sussex this winter. The 42-year-old is thought to have died around the same time as the first victim, and another patient is believed to have narrowly avoided death.

The hospital has reportedly set aside a designated flu ward, including a resuscitation room, because of the life-threatening nature of the virus.

Staff on the ward are wearing masks, gloves and hospital gowns to limit the spread of infection, according to a Gazette source.

Nichola Hill, 37, whose 14-month-old daughter Elspeth recovered from swine flu at the DGH and was discharged on January 4, said, ?We were told by a nurse that a lot of people in their 30s were in intensive care with swine flu.

?Another nurse said two people had died.

?One of the nurses in A&E said Elspeth was the first really poorly child with swine flu, but they knew that would be the start of it.

?They obviously knew the signs there would be an epidemic.?

Flu victim dies at SRI

A WOMAN has died in hospital after being admitted to hospital with flu-like symptoms.

As the Observer went to press NHS Forth Valley confirmed the death but were unable to give an exact cause.

An NHS Forth Valley spokesperson said: ?We can confirm that a young woman was admitted to Stirling Royal Infirmary on Thursday night showing flu-like symptoms, and died in intensive care on Friday.

?An increase in the number of flu cases has been reported across Forth Valley and people in the usual seasonal flu at-risk groups plus pregnant women are being urged to take up the offer of vaccination.

?Groups entitled to free seasonal flu vaccinations are: those aged 65 and over and anyone under the age of 65 with a medical condition that puts them in an at-risk group.

Big pharmacies are running low on flu vaccine

Boots the Chemist and Lloyds Pharmacy, which have been running private vaccination services, have said they now have 'limited availability' of the jabs.

GPs have been reporting shortages of flu vaccine as a late surge of people in the at risk groups come forward for their jabs on the NHS.

The shortages have led to a row over whether the 'worried well' should be able to purchase the vaccine privately.

It comes as the parents of a three-year-old girl who died from swine flu called for everyone to be able to have the vaccine.

In total 14.7m doses of seasonal flu vaccine were ordered for Britain, of which around four per cent was ordered by pharmacies, supermarkets and companies.

The Tehran University of Medical Sciences has made available 3 sets of sequences at GenBank recently that were sampled on 2010_10_02 with 2 additional divergent samples taken on 2010-12-06. These sequences directly parallel the developments from the UK Severe Wave and additionally feature hyper-zoonotic, sub-segment HA genetic acquisition.

Though considerable divergency is currently being demonstrated within the recent UK severe wave, two different sets of combinations have been coalescing throughout the world since late 2009 and have begun forming sub-clades in the past 4 months that are demonstrated well in these 3 Iranian sequences.

Do these Iranian sequences signal the type of zoonotic genetic behaviour that is driving some areas of the UK today to report an 800% rise in the number ill from Pandemic H1N1?

Though the origins of the primary branching polymorphisms begin much earlier, the later stages of transmission during late Summer and early Fall 2010 (Northern Hemisphere designations) more clearly distinguish the coalescence. Florida13 and Florida14 during August 2010 are recorded as having progenitor co-circulation of these two divergent sub-clades that transmitted and continued into the UK and Iran. Florida13_2010_08_02 has 4 of the same SNPs as IranBandarAbbas5096_2010_10_02. 100% of those matches [4 of 4 (137T, 186P, 377G, syn474C)] between Florida and Iran are also found in animal reservoirs.

Recall that small incursions of genetics from animal reservoirs are known to imbalance viral behaviour in the new human host. The HA 377G found on Florida13 and BandarAbbas5096 exists on the fatal UKEngland4500186_2010_11_f sequence and four other UK sequences from October and November of 2010, but was not notated on the HPA Ellis Figure3 <SUP>1</SUP> phylogenetic tree.

The IranShahriar5336_2010_12_06 evaluation details a remarkable hyper-zoonosis. At least 78% of the polymorphisms (7 of 9) are clearly demonstrated as amino acid variation or single nucleotide polymorphisms in animal reservoirs, primarily H3N8, H5N1 and H7N7. Wisconsin08_2010_08_10 shares homology at 7 of the IranShahriar5336_2010_12_06 SNPs. 86% of those matches [6 of 7 (137T, 186P, syn297N, 388K, 444K, syn474C)] between Wisconsin and Iran are found in animals (5 in H3N8).

The homology between Iran and the UK is more striking than either of these vivid US examples and may be well visualised by scrolling through the GeneWurx v5 spreadsheet detailing these specific changes with combinational development over the course of this pandemic.

Swine flu confirmed

Health bosses have confirmed a patient with swine flu was admitted to Bassetlaw Hospital over the festive season.

The patient ? under the age of 65 ? remains at hospital and is believed to have overcome the illness.

At the height of the outbreak, statistics gathered by the Strategic Health Authorities across England established 11.5 per cent of calls received by NHS Bassetlaw were flu related.

The Health Protection Agency verified 50 people died of flu this winter across the country, with 45 of these due to swine flu.

Cotswold mother-of-three dies of suspected swine flu

A COTSWOLD mother-of-three who died last Saturday may have become one of the latest victims of the swine flu virus sweeping the country.

Tracy Watkins, aged 47, of Over Norton near Chipping Norton, died at the Horton Hospital, Banbury, after being taken ill the day before.

Her husband, Richard, speaking at the family home in Over Norton, said the illness came on extremely suddenly.

?I had the flu over Christmas and couldn?t get out of bed for five days. Tracy was still taking the kids shopping last week. She felt rough and phoned the doctor on Friday morning and he said it was probably flu and he?d give her a prescription for antibiotics just in case.

Ten deaths in East Yorkshire swine flu outbreak
The number of people with swine flu who have died in East Yorkshire so far this winter has risen to 10.

Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said nine of the 10 people had other underlying health problems.

One had no previous health issues and swine flu was said to have been a contributory factor in their death.

Five of those who died were men and five were women. No children were among the dead, the trust added. New national figures are to be released later.

Northern Ireland swine flu death toll rises again


The Public Health Agency (PHA) has confirmed that 17 people have now died from swine flu in NI since November.

It also said that two previously healthy adults had died from the H1N1 virus.

The PHA is awaiting the results of tests to determine if another person who died with swine flu had underlying medical conditions.

Earlier this month it was reported that 14 people had died of swine flu.

The PHA said this year there had been no deaths of pregnant women, but as previously reported a child with the virus had died.

In its latest flu bulletin published on Thursday, the PHA confirmed that in the first week of January, there were 204 new laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu in Northern Ireland compared to 200 in the last week of December 2010.

Confusion in Wrexham over who gets the swine flu vaccine

CONFUSION over how to obtain the swine flu vaccine is mounting as the Maelor reveals it is still treating cases.

The hospital has reported two patients with confirmed swine flu and a further seven cases are suspected, but patients, who are not considered at risk, have been refused prescriptions for the vaccine.

The NHS has confirmed anyone who is not at risk can pay for the flu vaccine at chemists or privately through their GP.

But when one Wrexham mother of three, who did not wish to be named, visited her local pharmacy she was told staff were not licensed to administer the vaccine to her children, all under the age of five, because they were too young.

Swine flu infection leads to premature birth


Leonnie Meyers struggled to breathe and doctors performed an emergency Caesarean to save her baby.

Her partner, David Smith, 29, watched helplessly as the 24-year-old was placed on a ventilator and baby Jacob went into an incubator.

But both mother and baby have made a full recovery since the birth on Christmas Day. Medics are hopeful Jacob will be back home in Derby, within the next few days.

Mr Smith said: 'When they told me they were going to have to get the baby out, I was so worried for both of them.'

Fifty-one H1N1 (2009) viruses have been fully tested for susceptibility, one of which was found to be phenotypically resistant to oseltamivir (including in the 17 reported above), while all 51 retained sensitivity to zanamivir.

Three influenza A H3 viruses and fifty-eight influenza B viruses have
been fully tested for susceptibility and found to be sensitive to oseltamivir and zanamivir.

There have been reports of secondary bacterial infections amongst influenza cases.

Analysis of surveillance data has identified increases for a number of invasive bacterial pathogens in December 2010 compared to
December 2009.

This includes invasive S. pneumoniae (13% increase; 619 to 697 isolates confirmed by HPA national reference laboratory, the increase in cases is predominately seen in adults ≤ 65 years, particularly in the 15-44 age group); Group A Streptococcus (36% increase; 103 to 161 isolates confirmed by HPA national reference laboratory) and meningococcal disease (150 cases confirmed by the HPA Meningococcal Reference Unit in December 2010.

This number is higher than in December 2009 (88), but similar to the number in 2008 (192)).

Investigations are underway to determine whether influenza may be contributing to these increases. An alert was issued to front-line clinicians by the Chief Medical Officer on 10th January 2011 to raise awareness.

More information will be published in the HPA Health Protection Report (HPR) on 14 January 2011.

In the 12 weeks up to 2 January 2010, over 80% of all lower respiratory tract isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae reported as tested, were susceptible to the
antibiotics tetracycline and co-amoxiclav (table 2). There have been no significant changes in susceptibility in recent years.

We are obviously not doing a very good job in explaining to the British public the changes in the at risk group from the old to new flu strains.
From the report the majority (71%) of the traditional, elderly group (over 64s), are getting their shots but the under 65s who are in the defined at risk categories, and are eligible for free shots, are not taking up the offer to the same extent (46%).
The numbers are more stark when you look at the fatal cases 16% were 65 plus (95% would have been more typical pre H1N1(2009)). Nearly 80% were targeted for free flu shots but only 16% of them had taken up the offer – which compared to the 46% figure quoted above might imply the vaccine is doing some good - and less than 10% had had the pandemic shot last year (a recent European report put vaccine effectiveness at about 65%).

We need to get the message out to the under 65s that if you are offered the shot you should take it. Just because you have had flu in the past, and suffered no worse than your peers, is no indicator that your illness will run as smoothly if you catch the H1N1(2009) strain.

IOH also highlighted the oseltamivir resistance figures but, sadly, these reports do not give a breakdown between those found in the community and those found in hospitalised, especially immuno-compromised, patients who have already started a course of Tamiflu. H275Y in random wild type samples is a concern of an entirely different magnitude.

UK: Number of flu deaths reaches 112
A total of 112 people with flu have died in the UK since September, the Government has announced. The figure is up on the 50 cases reported last week and includes six children under five, nine aged five to 14 and 70 aged 15 to 64. Of 81 cases where information was available, 63 were in risk groups for flu. The number of people in critical care in England has fallen from 783 last week to 661 and the latest figures come a day after the mother of a three-year-old victim urged the Government to further review its vaccination policy.
Gemma Ameen and her husband, Zana, switched off life support to their daughter, Lana, just two days after she apparently caught a cold on Christmas Eve. The couple, a nurse and a doctor, initially took their daughter to hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester, where she was diagnosed with an infection and sent home. Later the same day she was taken back to Stepping Hill Hospital after she suffered multiple fits. (Snip) she then had to be revived three times over a three-hour period as they said a junior doctor refused to call a specialist consultant. Lana was eventually transferred to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool but died on Boxing Day.

Mrs Ameen issued a photograph of her daughter in intensive care in a bid to reverse Government policy on who is eligible for the seasonal flu vaccine which combats the H1N1 virus. The Department of Health insisted independent expert advice was "absolutely clear" that children who do not have risk factors should not be vaccinated. Four die of flu at William Harvey Hospital

Four patients at Ashford's William Harvey Hospital have died of flu in five days.

Two were killed by the swine flu strain and two were only in their 30s.

A spokesman for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust said: "Flu deaths are not unusual in the winter.

"What is unusual is that it's normally the elderly population and these people were in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

After going through all the posts on this thread and writing down all the fatalities, I have counted a total of 101 deaths in England. With 27 reported in Scotland, 27 reported in Wales, and 17 reported in NI, the total number of deaths is 172. Now that I have names, genders, ages, and/or hospital names for most of the victims up to this post, I'll check new media reports with the database and try to keep a current number of reported deaths.

Flu death toll rises as millions at risk remain unvaccinated


An estimated 4 million people in England who are at risk of severe complications or death if they contract seasonal flu remain unvaccinated this year, government health officials said today.

The officials said there was "extreme difficulty" in getting the importance of immunisation across to those most at risk, with the news coming as the Department of Health revealed that 112 people across the UK had died from flu-related illness since September, with the highest number in the 45 to 64 age range.

Fatalities are more than double the 50 deaths reported last week, and include six children under five, nine aged five to 14 and 70 people aged 15 to 64.

Seasonal flu deaths more than double in Britain

The number of deaths in a seasonal flu epidemic that has swept Britain since October more than doubled to 112 on Thursday, up from 50 a week earlier, figures from the Health Protection Agency showed. Of the 112 confirmed deaths, 95 had the H1N1 flu strain that spread around the world as a pandemic in 2009 and 2010, officials said.

The majority of those who died were under 65 years old and nine cases were in children under 14. Since October, there have been six deaths in children under five. The agency said most of the additional 62 deaths documented since last week did not actually occur in the past week, but in December. They were only confirmed in the past week because of a backlog over the seasonal holiday period. Continued:

Comment: In other words, none of the deaths from January have been included, and it is not clear how big a backlog there may be awaiting post mortem and a death certificate, nor how many December fatalaties are yet to be assessed.
