A warning has been issued by Cardiff Council after a case of bird flu was confirmed at a popular city park.

People have been urged to avoid touching or feeding birds at any park across the capital, following the discovery at Roath Park Lake earlier this week.

A goose is now confirmed to have died of avian flu, while a further six birds were also found dead at the park this week, with wardens believing these deaths were also caused by the virus.

It comes just weeks after a swan found dead at the Knap Lake in Barry also tested positive for avian flu, with more than a dozen other carcasses found at the lake since...

Avian flu kills birds at St Kilda World Heritage Site

Avian flu has been confirmed on the remote Scottish archipelago of St Kilda.

National Trust for Scotland (NTS), which manages the Unesco World Heritage Site, said a significant proportion of the islands' great skuas had died.

It said about 104 skua had been found dead so far this season.

St Kilda is more than 40 miles (64km) from the Western Isles where the islands local authority has warned of a bird flu outbreak.

The group of tiny islands and sea stacks that make up St Kilda is home to almost a million seabirds, including gannets, shearwaters and storm petrels.

Conservationists warn spread of bird flu is wiping out UK seabirds
A strain of H5N1 avian influenza has now found its way into UK seabird populations, which are of global importance and at particular risk because of their low reproductive rates
Environment 10 June 2022
By Adam Vaughan

Conservationists fear a highly pathogenic bird flu is to blame for a growing wave of mortality in UK seabirds, which were already facing severe pressure from climate change and overfishing.

The H5N1 avian influenza has killed wild birds including cranes in Israel, Dalmatian pelicans in Greece, knots (a type of shorebird) in the Netherlands and now several UK seabird species, primarily gannets. More than 383,000 bird deaths from the virus have been counted by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) since October 2021.

About 16,500 of a population of 43,000 Svalbard barnacle geese, which migrate between Scotland’s Solway Firth and Norway’s Svalbard, are estimated to have died during the recent winter, says James Reynolds at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, a UK charity.

“But the epicentre now is…. in Shetland and in the Northern Isles [of Scotland] and it’s also showing up in the Western Isles and around mainland sites,” says Reynolds.

“Wildlife has been particularly affected this [bird flu] season,” says a spokesperson at WOAH. “We are seeing significant mortality in a wider range of wild birds and in various geographical areas, which is unusual.”...

Warning not to touch dead seabirds on Northumberland and Teesside coastlines

People have been told not to touch or allow their dogs go near any dead or sick seabirds they find along the North East coastline.

More gannets, razorbills and guillemots have been found washed up at Seaton point, near Boulmer in Northumberland, and Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool.

Some of the seabirds found on Teesside have been collected by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

They will be examined as part of its wild bird surveillance survey.

Tony Hanson, Hartlepool Borough Council's director of neighbourhoods, said: "Not all dead birds will be collected for the purpose of the survey, however any remaining dead birds will be disposed of by the council.

"We would ask people to please don't touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds and to keep their dogs away from them as well."...
