By Sarah-Jane Absalom
Senior Reporter

Recent winters have seen poultry keepers having to take special measures to keep flocks indoors over fears of the disease spreading to farmed birds.

The latest casualty was discovered by Simon Tucker at Freshwater East in Pembrokeshire.

“It was a gannet,” he said. “While it looked healthy enough, it just wasn’t moving whenever anybody approached it, and with bird flu hitting a colony on one of the nearby islands, I felt it important to pass the information on.”

Two more dead birds, namely a gull and an egret, were discovered on the rocks at Newgale over the weekend...

Bird flu is killing some of UK's most revered birds, data shows

Thursday 13 October 2022 at 1:56pm
Rupert Evelyn
...

This year alone five sea eagles (Britain’s largest bird of prey), two golden eagles and seven great skuas have been found dead and tested positive for avian flu.

The true scale of destruction is hard to determine as weekly data only reveals tested birds, but it gives a grim insight into the species affected.

The number of eagles testing positive is seven times higher than 2021, when only one bird was found with the disease, and data from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) suggests that no eagles were found with bird flu between 2016 and 2020.

Swans on Norfolk Broads with symptoms of avian flu to be euthanised
Published 5 hours ago

Wildlife experts patrolling the Norfolk Broads to find and euthanise swans dying from bird flu said the number of dead swans is "unbelievable".

Teams from the Marine and Wildlife Rescue (MWR) and the RSPCA are using vessels to search the waterways for severely-ill birds.

Some 35 bird carcasses were found on a single five-mile stretch of river between Horning and Wroxham.

MWR says the outbreak appears to be particularly acute among swans.

Dan Goldsmith from MWR said: "These birds have to be euthanised because they will not get better, and you can't take them to a bird rehabilitation centre if they are suspected to have the disease, because it could spread."...
