Nottinghamshire bird flu warning after gull deaths
Published 1 hour ago

Avian flu has been detected in gulls near a river in Nottinghamshire, officials have said.

Trading standards officers said tests had shown five birds, recovered near the River Idle in Newington, near Retford, were infected.

They said they were working on biosecurity measures to try to limit further spreading of the disease.

People have been urged not to touch any sick or dead birds they find in the area.

Nottinghamshire County Council said it recovered the infected black-headed gulls on 3 May...

16 June 2023

Some seabird species have returned to Scotland in lower numbers this breeding season following the devastating outbreak of avian flu last year, according to early monitoring by NatureScot and its partners.

Despite recent concerning outbreaks of the virus in England, there is cautious optimism that colonies in Scotland have so far avoided the high number of deaths observed last summer.

However, early surveillance of seabird colonies suggest that some species have returned in significantly lower numbers than in previous years, with great skuas being especially hard hit.

Brownsea Island: Bird flu confirmed after 600 birds found dead
Published

Bird flu has been confirmed at a nature reserve where 600 birds have been found dead in recent weeks.

Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, Dorset, has been closed since 16 June while tests were carried out.

The results from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed it was avian flu.

Dorset Wildlife Trust said it would "potentially have a serious impact on future populations" as most of the birds found dead were chicks...

Bird flu outbreak hits remote stretches of Welsh coastline killing hundreds of seabirds
Paul Godfrey
Thu, July 20, 2023 at 9:36 AM EDT·2 min read

July 20 (UPI) -- Wales confirmed a summer outbreak of bird flu Thursday among seabird colonies on its southwestern coast with the public being asked to report dead or dying birds to authorities, but to stay clear of them and keep their dogs on a lead.

Testing on some of the hundreds of dead birds washed up on the beaches of South Pembrokeshire -- mostly guillemots, razorbills and gannets -- had determined they died from avian influenza, Pembrokeshire Council said in a news release.

A multi-agency response had been initiated to deal with the outbreak but no so-called "Avian Influenza Prevention Zone" had been declared, it added...
