(APC), the two largest U.S. independent oil and gas producers by market value, said they are removing non-essential workers from some western Gulf operations.


BP Plc has evacuated non-essential personnel from its Southern Green

The biggest factor in determining where the storm will go is the same high pressure system that?s driving temperatures into the 100s across much of the central and southern U.S., Kottlowski said by telephone. Tropical Storm Don churns toward Texas

Tropical storm Don is headed towards the coast of TX, and should make a landfall somewhere near Corpus Christi late Fri night or early Sat morning. Right now the winds are around 40 mph, but it doesn?t look very organized on the radar. It will start to churn into warmer water as it heads to the Western Gulf of Mexico that will help it intensify, and the National Hurricane Center brings it up to a 60 mph storm by Fri night (hurricane force winds are 75 mph). This could be some great news for parched TX, b/c it has the potential to bring a good 3-6? of rain with it, possibly a little more. It will also cool the temps down for a day or two as far north as lower OK. We?ll see how strong he gets, and what the weather will be like for the Western Gulf over the next few days...

Forecast for Don
The big question for Don is, will it be a boon or bane for Texas? The state is currently suffering through its worst drought in recorded history, and Don has the potential to bring some decent drought-busting rains to the state. If Don can expand in size and intensify to a 50 - 55 mph tropical storm, it has the capability to bring hundreds of millions of dollars worth of beneficial rains to the state. However, we have a Goldilocks problem. We can't have Don intensifying into a hurricane, or its winds and flooding might bring hundreds of millions in damage. Neither do we want Don to stay in its current state, which is too small and weak to bring significant rains to Texas. If Don follows the current NHC forecast, which brings the storm up to a moderate-strength tropical storm, that would be just right. This forecast is low-confidence, though, since Don's small size makes it prone to sudden changes in strength, either upward or downward. NHC is giving Don just a 14% chance of intensifying into a hurricane in its 5am advisory, but this could easily change upward if Don manages to overcome its vertical tilt and start consolidating an eyewall. I put the odds of Don reaching hurricane strength at 30%. None of the computer models is predicting Don will become a hurricane.

COLLEGE STATION, July 28, 2011 ? Tropical Storm Don, now moving across the Gulf of Mexico toward the Texas coast, is not potent enough to break the ongoing Texas drought, says Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon.

?It?s been so dry in Texas for so long, this one storm will be a drop in an empty bucket,? says Nielsen-Gammon, who is a professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University in addition to serving as the state climatologist for Texas.

Center of the storm looks to hit near Baffin Bay; tropical storm strength winds should start to be felt in South Texas at 8 p.m.

?Don?s not behaving as a typical tropical storm,? said Mike Gittinger, meteorologist with National Weather Service Corpus Christi. ?The heavier rainfall could be more near and south of the center, which is unusual.?

High pressure to the north and upper level winds from the east are tilting the system to configure the rains on the southern side of the storm, he said.

?The swath of heavier rain might be more in the Rio Grande Valley,? Gittinger said.

Don?s path shifted southerly overnight, then nudged north this morning with the center expected to reach land between 11 p.m. and midnight south of Baffin Bay, between Sarita and Kingsville. The projected impact cone has narrowed, extending from near Rockport down through southern Kenedy County line near Port Mansfield. Don will be fizzling out by 7 a.m. east of Laredo in Webb County, forecasters say.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Don began washing ashore on the south Texas Gulf Coast on Friday evening with mild winds and little of the rain that drought-afflicted Texans had been hoping for, the National Weather Service said.

With only two to four inches of rainfall expected, Don struck the lightly populated Baffin Bay area of the Texas Coastal Bend, north of Brownsville and south of Corpus Christi.
