Moist, cold weather helps H1N1 return
Bangalore:Aug 26, DHNS:

The instances of H1N1 Influenza, popularly known as swine flu, which reached near-endemic levels last winter, waned across Karnataka this summer. But it seems to have returned with a vengeance.

The damp and moist weather, so conducive for the growth of the virus, has contributed to its virulence again. The number of H1N1 positive cases, since the virus turned active with the onset of monsoon, has shot up to 254, with as many as 48 cases reported on Thursday across the State.

Although the panic level is not as high as it was last year, the new wave of infections have not been less alarming. Deaths continue to occur with some degree of regularity: 225 have been reported so far.

Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) director Dr Shashidhar Buggi said for the past two months, the number of people who tested positive for the virus has been about 10 to 12 per cent of those who visited the hospital for check ups. However, over the past two weeks, of those who visited the RGICD for check ups, nearly 25 to 30 per cent were detected carrying the virus.

?The weather is making it more conducive for the virus. In August, RGICD distributed 2,914 Tamiflu capsules to over 300 patients and 32 syrup bottles to 70 children,? Buggi said.

Of the 438 patients who have undergone treatment at the RGICD, 255 persons were placed under ?C? category. Their swabs were collected and sent to laboratories for tests.
Of these, 81 patients tested positive for the virus this month. According to Buggi, besides prescribing Tamiflu to patients who showed clear symptoms of H1N1 Influenza, their immediate family members are also being advised to take the anti-viral drug.

The RGICD has also been receiving several queries from modest nursing homes seeking suggestions and guidance on the procedure to be followed to tackle influenza-like illness.
At the Lakeside Medical Centre and Hospital, the number of patients complaining of cold, cough and fever has increased. Lakeside medical director Dr H Paramesh said his hospital received a number of suspected H1N1 cases in August.

95 swine flu deaths in Karnataka till Aug 25

A total of 95 people had died of swine flu in Karnataka till Aug 25 this year, state Health Minister B. Sriramulu said Friday.

So far this year, 1,702 people had been affected by the H1N1 flu, he told reporters here after a meeting with health ministry officials to assess the preparedness of the state to tackle the flu as well chikungunya and dengue in view of the revival of the monsoon.

In 2009, there were 1,799 H1N1 cases in the state and 135 of the patients died, Sriramulu said.

District administrations and health authorities have been told to be pro-active to prevent the spread of contagious diseases as several parts of the state have been receiving heavy rains in the last three days, he said.

There were 927 chikungunya cases in the state but no death has occurred from the disease, Sriramulu said.

There has been one death due to dengue while 1,294 had been affected by it, the minister said.

Deputy commissioners, district surgeons, and the heads of the administration and medicare, respectively, in Karnataka's 30 districts will be held responsible for any death from contagious diseases, Sriramulu said.

Sriramulu, a close associate of the Reddy brothers, mining barons and ministers, has been under attack from the opposition that he was busy in organizing rallies in his home district of Bellary while swine flu, dengue and chikungunya cases were spreading in the state.

7 deaths, 14 caes of H1N1 in 70 days
STANLEY G PINTO, TNN, Aug 27, 2010, 09.45pm IST

MANGALORE: Almost after a year the city reported its first H1N1 case, a total of seven deaths and 14 positive cases have been reported in the district since June 16 this year.

Of the seven deaths, five of them from neighbouring districts of Udupi, Chikmagalur, Madikeri and Kasargod.

The deceased are Anisha (24) from Madikeri, three-and-half-year-old Ranganath from Udupi, Jayashree Prabhu (34) from Kasargod, Sr Rosie (72) from Mangalore, Meena (22) from Chikmagalur, Gopalkrishna (50) from Mangalore and Tangacchan (45) from Kasargod.

District surveillance officer Dr Rajesh said that Sr Rosie was suffering from cancer and Gopalakrishna had arrived here from Hong Kong to see his ward who is studying at a medical college. The health officials here are now relieved as there have been no calls from hospitals since the past one week, indicating that the cases may have come down.

So far health officials had sent 56 samples from June 16, and 14 retuned positive. "There are no samples to be tested as of now," Dr Rajesh told TOI.

The doctors are not taking swabs of all patients who report flu-like symptoms. They have been categorized as Category A, B and C. Only Category C patients swabs are being taken.

While Category A consists of patients without any risk factors between 5 and 60 years, B is patients below 5 years and above 65 and pregnant women. They get treated with Tamiflu for five fays. Category C patients are those with chronic illnesses. Their swabs are taken and treatment started with Tamiflu before results come in.

H1N1 claims two lives in City
Bangalore, Aug 27, DHNS:

The resurgence of the H1N1 influenza turned deadlier on Friday with the death of two women in separate private hospitals in the City.

A 22-year-old woman, who was seven months into her pregnancy, died early Friday morning at the Fortis Hospital in Sheshadripuram.

Dr Lloyd Nazareth, medical superintendent of the hospital, said the woman was suffering from fever and cold when she was admitted to the hospital on August 24. ?Though we put her on ventilator and administered Tamiflu on the same day, she came very late. Her swab report confirmed her for flu,? he said.

Another woman, Krishna Kumari (40) was admitted to the hospital for a week and was on ventilator. In spite of being administered Tamiflu, she did not survive.

A resident of Vijayanagar, Kumari is survived by her husband and 10-year-old son. Doctors said she came with high fever and breathing problem. The hospital has one more confirmed case of H1N1 Influenza.

70 fresh positive cases

The number of patients testing positive for H1N1 Influenza continued to increase with 70 fresh cases testing positive for flu on Friday.

Incidence of H1N1 on the rise in Belgaum
M N Patil, Belgaum, August 28, DHNS:

Even though there are reports of people being afflicted with H1N1 every day, the Health Department in Belgaum district continues to be inactive in tackling the disease.

Latest report from Nimhans has confirmed three more H1N1 cases in the district. Last year, there were 45 confirmed cases of H1N1 and two died of the epidemic. This year, so far 73 people have been infected with H1N1 and seven have succumbed to the Flu. The number of people afflicted with the disease is on the rise, with 29 people being affected by the disease in the month of August alone, leading to a panic situation.

As many as 34 cases of H1N1 were reported from Belgaum taluk, while 10 cases have been reported from Gokak, five from Athani and two each from Bailahongal, Hukkeri and Ramdurg taluks and one case was reported from Soudatti taluk in the district, stated official sources.

As people migrate from Belgaum district to neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Goa is high the spread of the disease is very rapid, said officials in the Health Department.

Last year, the District Health Department had set up camps at the border to screen people entering the district, for H1N1. The move had helped in controlling the spread of the epidemic.

However, lack of such screening camps this time has only led to rise in the disease. Despite training being imparted to doctors, lab technicians and NGOs about tackling the epidemic, and awareness being created by distributing pamphlets, displaying posters, a lot needs to be desired, observed people in the district.

Minister for Health Sriramulu has declared that district health officers would be held responsible for any deaths due to H1N1. Ironically, the post of district health officer in Belgaum lies vacant, as the officer got retired a few weeks ago.

Woman succumbs

A woman succumbed to H1N1 influenza in Kongarahalli of Kollegal taluk in Chamarajnagar district on Friday. Sundaramma (46) was admitted to Mysore Mission Hospital on complaints of respiratory distress. The swab samples, however, have tested positive for H1N1, District Surveillance Officer Dr Mahadeva Naik said.

Houseful: Bangalore hospitals

All is not well on the health front. A visit to the city hospitals reveals a scary situation.

While BBMP officials may quote their figures of dengue, H1N1 and chikungunya in the city, doctors say that with a heavy rush of patients suffering from suspected dengue and H1N1 cases, hospitals are not able to meet their demands.

?After many years, we are facing a situation like this,? said Dr Sudarshan Ballel, medical director, Manipal Hospital.

?With a large number of suspected dengue and H1N1 cases pouring in each day, the hospital is full. We feel bad to say no to patients. But we are helpless. Almost all the beds starting from the general ward to the super deluxe rooms are filled,? he said.

There has been widespread awareness about these diseases among the people and realising its grave consequences, people are keen on getting admitted and treated in hospitals. Unfortunately, the number of hospital beds available in the city is not enough to meet the demand this season.

?My husband has fever for over three days. Blood test has indicated viral infection. We took him to a nearby hospital. But all the beds were full, so the doctor told us to treat him at home,? said Kamini B of Rustam Bagh.

Don?t spread rumours, says DHO
Rahul Belagali, Chikkaballapur, September 4,, DHNS:

The H1N1 disease which is fast spreading in the State has taken many lives in the State and the scare of Swine Flu has also spread to Chikkaballapur district.

Many have complained of having symptoms similar to the Swine Flu. Besides, there are rumours that three have died of the flu in the district.

But what is worrying the doctors here is the spread of false rumour about the disease.
Speaking to the Deccan Herald, the District Health Officer Dr Bhaira Reddy said, ?One must not jump to any conclusion, but wait for the medical report.?

He further said that a person might have complaints like bodypain, cold and fever but the case might not necessarily be Swine Flu. It is not possible to treat all the health complaints with a similar method, Dr Reddy added.

Reports to be considered

The swab tests are conducted on the suspected patients and the reports are sent to the Nimhans. ?Only the confirmed reports should be taken into consideration,? Dr Reddy observed.

He has issued strict instructions to the health department personnel from going public about the H1N1 cases. Besides, the department has taken up various awareness programmes.

?We have told the doctors not to confirm the case until they have confirmation from the labs,? he added.

When asked about the three suspected cases, he said the swab tests have been sent to the Nimhans and until the reports arrive, nothing can be confirmed, he added.

Swine flu deaths in Karnataka

As many as 16,228 suspected cases of H1N1 have been reported till August 30 in the State, of which, 3,633 cases were confirmed. Among these persons, some have been recovered, others are still in under treatment. Two women (40) of Mysore and Bangalore died of H1N1 on August 30, Dr Reddy added.

No takers for surgical masks in Bangalore this year despite H1N1 cases

Bangalore saw a boom in the sale of surgical masks in September last year as the news of swine flu outbreak spread across the city, with some of the medical stores selling about 500 masks a day.

This year, even though the number of people affected by the disease has not come down, there is hardly any demand for the masks, say sources in the pharmacies.

?Last year, around this time, there was a mad rush for the masks. We used to get bulk orders from many schools and other firms. But this time, we have sold only less than 100 masks so far,? said G Rajendra Prasad, managing partner of Cash Pharmacy.

However, statistics available with the government show that the number of patients affected by H1N1 virus has not decreased. While about 1,440 swine flu cases were reported from the city last year, 1,378 cases have been reported till August this year.

?Last year, even healthy people used to buy masks. But now, I think they are less worried about the disease,? said Ragavendra R, owner of a medical shop.

Dr Sashidhar Buggi, director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases said, ?Bangaloreans have realised that there is no point in panicking. Anyway, the surgical mask will not prevent swine flu.

Only N95 masks can stop the virus from affecting you. Moreover, many precautionary measures like vaccines are available in the market now.?

Health dept adopts casual approach even after 206 test positive
Five die of H1N1 in one week
Bangalore, Sept 6, DHNS

Five persons have died of the dreaded H1N1 Influenza in the past one week, four of them in Bangalore, but the State?s Department of Health apparently sounds very casual about the health situation in the State.

According to the State Surveillance Unit (SSU), four persons have died in different private hospitals in Bangalore and one person in Mysore.

It is not just a spurt in the number of deaths, but there have been 206 fresh positive cases of H1N1 Influenza since August 31. On September 1, out of the 190 cases tested, 65 cases tested positive for the dreaded influenza.

Although the number of positive cases has increased, the Health department has stopped the weekly publishing details of number of deaths and positive cases which it was doing earlier. When Dr Chalavaraj, Joint Director, Communicable Diseases, was questioned, he simply denied the allegation. ?I am not aware about what details are being sent, I will instruct the department concerned to send the updates,? he said.

Explaining the increase in the number of positive cases, Dr V Ravi, head of Neurovirology department at Nimhans, who is in charge of testing the throat swabs at the lab, said the virus tended to get virulent during the season. Adequate measures have been taken to treat patients with symptoms of H1N1 Influenza, said Health Commissioner D N Nayak.

This year alone, 100 people have died and since the first attack last year, 235 persons have succumbed till date. There have been 3,874 positive cases in the State so far
.

Check spread of dengue: HC to State

The High Court has directed the State Government to address the outbreak of dengue and chikungunya in the State on war footing.

Hearing a petition by Chandrakala Manjunatha seeking to prevent the spread of dengue the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice Manjula Chellur directed the state to furnish details regarding the spread of the disease and steps taken
to prevent it to the petitioners on weekly basis.

The Bench also directed the appointment of officers to gather district-wise report. ?Such update shall be made available to the petitioner?s advocate for eight weeks,? the Bench said. The petitioner has been given the liberty to approach the Court, if the steps taken are not satisfactory.

H1N1 Threat Is Far From Over

Times of India
07 October 2010
Bangalore, India

State Sees 50 Deaths, 1,596 Confirmed Cases In 2 Months
far.jpg

It may not be grabbing headlines anymore but that does not mean it?s no longer a threat to our health. With 50 deaths registered in Karnataka in 57 days, the deadly H1N1 virus is still much a cause of concern.

According to the ministry of health and family welfare website, there were 50 deaths and 1,596 laboratory?confirmed cases in the state between August 1 to September 26. In all, 248 deaths and 4,295 laboratory?confirmed cases have been registered since May 2009.

What makes it more alarming is the fact that one?fourth of the total cases have been recorded in the past three months. For instance, the total cases confirmed in India is 44,350, with 2,520 deaths. Of these, 12,407 cases were detected and 989 deaths occurred since June 2010. Many of the victims belong to the productive age group.

Karnataka has the second largest number of cases. The trend of cases in Bangalore is same as that in Chennai, Hyderabad and Vellore. "During the summers there are fewer cases. Monsoon and winter ? seasons for influenza ? see an increase," said Prajakt J Barde, assistant medical director, Serum Institute of India Ltd, Pune.
