Bhatkal: Swine flue panic has struck Bhatkal town with the death of baby who died in Manipal, Kasturba Hospital on Wednesday. But on Friday doctors at Manipal Hospital has confirmed that child's death was caused by Swine flue.

According to the sources, the deceased baby has been identified as Bhagya Lakshmi D/o Sukra Gowda (3 and a half year old) of Haloor village in Konar gram panchayat of Bhatkal taluk. The baby was admitted to Manipal Hospital after she had developed fever symptoms. A sibling of the deceased, Nagashri, a one and a half year old female baby, who is said to be battling between life and death also is reportedly has been infected with the H1N1 admitted in the same hospital.


With the News of the symptoms H1N1 found in two babies from the town, the whole town has been stricken by the fear of Swine flu. More than 25 patients with the symptoms of fever, from Haloor village of Konar gram panchayat in Bhatkal taluk, has been admitted in Bhatkal Government Hospital on Friday with the fear of being the patients of H1N1.
Bhatkal MLA J D Naik visited the hospital and condole the patients. He delivered the necessary instruction to the doctors, to take the proper care of the patients.

Taluk Panchayat Executive officer Uday Naik, Dr. Manjunath Shatty, Dr. Krishna, Dr. Prakash Kamath, Dr. Satish, Taluka Panchayat members Vittal Naik and Shailendra Gowda and others were present in the Hospital on the occasion.

A woman tested positive to H1N1 in Suntikoppa. The woman, Aneesha (24) is being treated at Unity Hospital in Mangalore.


Speaking to Deccan Herald, District Surveillance Officer Dr Sathish said she was admitted to a private clinic in Kodagu with symptoms of H1N1. However, later she was shifted to KMC, Mangalore. Now the test has confirmed H1N1. He said no H1N1 cases have been reported in Kodagu this year.

MANGALORE: Almost after a year the city reported its first H1N1 case, six positive cases have been reported as on Monday, of which a pregnant woman, who tested positive for H1N1, has died.

District surveillance officer Rajesh confirmed to TOI that a total of 16 samples had been sent to Manipal and six had retuned positive.

He did not confirm the death saying it was very difficult to ascertain whether the woman died due to H1N1. "We don't know the exact cause. We can't say the death is because of HINI. Only a physician can decide," he added.

Regarding the reasons for the onset of the flu, the medical officer said the virus was already in the community and the dormant virus was active due to favourable weather conditions and the low immunity group was getting affected. The six positive patients are in two hospitals in the city and among them a patient is from Madikeri.

The hospital authorities confirmed that the woman was H1N1 positive and she had died. "She was brought to the hospital in a serious condition. During pregnancy, a woman's immunity is low and the patient had severe lung infection. She had grade 3 symptoms and we started her on Tamiflu even before getting the results," said a doctor at the hospital. The other two patients, who also tested positive for H1N1, are recovering. The hospitals are getting adequate supplies of Tamiflu from the health department. "The pregnant woman was also recovering, but her condition deteriorated suddenly. We suspect myocarditis," the doctor added. Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). It resembles a heart attack but coronary arteries are not blocked. Myocarditis is most often due to infection by common viruses.

Regarding mutation of the virus, Dr Rajesh said they had not received any guidelines or note from the government. "If the original virus which was seen in the country had mutated, the government would have notified us," he added. Surprisingly, majority of the patients admitted at the hospital ICU for H1N1 like symptoms are below 30.

Teenager succumbs to H1N1

BELGAUM: A teenaged girl, who had recently come here from Pandharpur in Maharashtra, has died due to swine flu. Though she succumbed to the H1N1 influenza on Friday, it was confirmed on Sunday.

The victim, Renuka Hanmant Mutagekar (19) of Kedanur village, had been ill ever since she returned to Kedanur from Pandharpur on July 21. She was admitted to the district hospital on July 22. The doctors had sent her swab samples to Nimhans (Bangalore) for tests.

Six test positive for H1N1; one dead
Mangalore/Thirthahalli, July 27, DHNS:

Six persons have tested positive for H1N1 in Mangalore this week. Speaking to Deccan Herald, District Surveillance Officer Rajesh said a total of 16 samples had been sent to Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, of which six tested positive.


The six patients are being treated in two hospitals in the city. Five of them are from Mangalore and one from Madikeri.

Rajesh added that none of the six patients had returned from abroad or had visited other places. ?The H1N1 virus was already in the community and it was active due to favourable weather conditions and low immunity group was affected,? he pointed.
Three patients have already been discharged after the treatment.

?A pregnant woman who tested positive to H1N1 on July 16 died on July 22, incidentally after recovering from H1N1,? he said and added that since the doctors who treated her said she had died of pregnancy complications, her death could not be attributed to H1N1.
The Department is also supplying adequate Tamiflu tablets to hospitals where H1N1 patients are being treated.

Flu claims one
Basavaraj (43), a resident of Indiranagar, who had been diagnosed with H1N1 a week ago succumbed to the flu at a hospital in Manipal on Monday night.
Following his death, Legislator Kimmane Ratnakar held an emergency meeting with officials, elected representatives and doctors at the Taluk Panchayat to take precautionary measures against the spread of H1N1.

BANGALORE: An on-duty police sub-inspector on Saturday sustained severe fracture on his right leg after a speeding two-wheeler hit him.


The victim, Govindappa TR, works at Ulsoor police station. He was helping pedestrians to cross the road while on duty at Koramangala Inner Ring Road when a speeding two-wheeler knocked him down. He was rushed to Hosmat Hospital. He needs surgery to fix the broken bones.

One more H1N1 death

A day after a 23-year-old man died of H1N1 in the city, a 37-year-old was reported to have died of the virus at a private hospital in the city on Saturday. Also, 18 persons have tested positive for H1N1 in the city.

3-yr-old dies of swine flu

MANGALORE: A three-and-half-year-old baby, referred to the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre (RAPCC), from Udupi, died of swine flu on Monday. District surveillance officer Rajesh told TOI that the baby tested positive for swine flu.

As on Monday, of the 28 samples sent by the district health office to Manipal, eight have returned positive. On Monday, the health officials took seven swabs and sent it for testing. Of these seven patients, five are from Kerala.

Two succumb to H1N1 in State
Shimoga/Chamarajnagar, August 3, DHNS:

The H1N1 toll in the district went up to four with an infected woman from Tirthahalli succumbing to the influenza on Sunday. A man from Chamarajnagar district has also succumbed to the influenza.


Ganga (40), was hospitalised at Manipal with H1N1 a week ago. District Health Officer Dr Channabsappa told Deccan Herald that her health condition deteriorated and she breathed last on Sunday night. The flu had claimed a woman from Tirthahalli last week.

A suspected case of H1N1 flu has been reported from the City also. The swab sample of a 35-year-old woman who showed symptoms of the disease has been sent to Manipal for tests, the DHO said.

The death of Hanumanth Nayaka of Galipura Extension in Chamarajanagar has also been attributed to H1N1 flu. He breathed last four days ago.

MYSORE: A woman succumbed to the H1N1 virus in Mysore on Friday. The district health authorities have confirmed that the death was due to swine flu.

Savithramma (51) died from bronchial pneumonia at Basappa Memorial hospital around 10 am. A resident of Hunsur town, Savithramma was admitted to the hospital in the third week of July. She was suffering from fever and cough. Earlier she was treated at a hospital in Hunsur for four days before she was shifted to Mysore.

Dead youth tests H1N1 +ve

Yogesh, son of Mariyappa, who died on July 30 due to high fever and cough was affected by H1N1.


This is the first case of death due to H1N1 in the district in the current year. Last year, six people have died and earlier, five people have died.

Yogesh (25) who died due to H1N1 infection was son of Mariyappa. He was a construction worker working in Bangalore.

Having been admitted initially to a private nursing home, he was later admitted to a hospital in Mysore for treatment.

Health Officer Dr Harshavardhan said that the report confirming H1N1 infection has been received. He said that 25 cases are suspected to be affected by H1N1 and the remaining reports are yet to be received.

2 test positive for H1N1


BELGAUM: Two more persons have tested positive for H1NI in the district. The swab sample reports of two women, received from Nimhans Hospital (Bangalore), tested positive for the influenza. Both the women are in their 40s. One woman is from Belgaum city and other is from Mavinakatti village of the taluk.

Sources in the district surveillance department said that since January 49 cases of swime flu have been confirmed in the district. Two of them succumbed to the virus.

The health department has instructed government medical officers to visit schools and colleges in their jurisdiction and create awareness about H1N1 among students.

H1N1 claims another woman

BANGALORE: A 35-year-old woman, who was infected with H1N1, died at M S Ramaiah Hospital on Monday after severe respiratory distress.

Dr Naresh Shetty, medical director, M S Ramaiah Hospital said: "Her swab samples tested positive and she was admitted on August 4 with respiratory problems."

The deceased was a resident of Malleswaram.

85 students show H1N1 symptoms

Eighty five students of Morarji Desai Residential School in Hosur camp of Hukkeri taluk in Belgaum district have shown the symptoms of H1N1.


Swab samples of four children have been sent to Nimhans, Bangalore for testing, official sources said here on Thursday. In all 125 students are studying in the school.

District surveillance officer Dr Jagadish Nucchin and district epidemiologist Dr Rajanish Meti along with RRT team visited the school and observed that there was no proper ventilation in the school and that the hostel rooms were overcrowded. All 85 suspected of H1N1 were treated by the team. Hukkeri General Hospital medical officer and child specialist Dr Mudabhavi have been asked to look after the affected students.

All precautionary measures have been taken to ensure the safe health of the students, sources added.

H1N1 kills woman, daughter

In a span of two days a mother and daughter succumbed to H1N1 Influenza at Honnalli taluk in Davangere.


Mamatha (35) was from Kuruva village and died on Thursday night at a hospital. Just a day earlier, her mother Anusuyamma too succumbed to H1N1 at the same hospital. Hospital sources said the daughter was attending to her mother at the hospital.

Further, two patients from Belgaum district who were undergoing treatment at the Sangli District Hospital in Maharashtra died, taking the total number of H1N1 deaths in the district to six since January.

4 test positive for H1N1

Four more people were confirmed of being inflicted by H1N1 in Belgaum district by NIMHANS Bangalore.


An official release said here on Wednesday that swab samples of 10 persons were sent to Bangalore for analysis and the report received on Wednesday confirmed four people of having H1N1.

So far, 170 samples have been sent to NIMHANS from the district of which 61 were confirmed; six patients died and rest were being treated in various hospitals of the district, the release said. Taluk-wise figures of the people suffering from H1N1 are Athani (five), Bailhongal (three), Belgaum (26), Chikodi (two), Gokak (nine), Hukkeri (four), Khanapur (two), Ramdurg (four), Raibag (three), Soudatti (one) and two from other districts

Five more persons have tested positive and a man succumbed to the H1N1 (A) Influenza in Belgaum.


The report of swab sample tests from Nimhans in Bangalore confirmed that the 40-year-old man from Koppal district, who died at KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital here on Saturday, was affected with H1N1.

An official release here said the five other affected persons are a woman (23), a man (47) and two girls of 13 and 19 years from Belgaum taluk and an 18-year-old girl from Gokak.

As many as 69 have tested positive and seven have died of H1N1 since January, the release stated.

Viruses gather more vigour

BANGALORE: It's not criminals or chain-snatchers but viruses that are giving Bangaloreans the jitters now. Suspected cases of dengue and H1N1 have shown such a tremendous increase over the days that hospitals are over-booked for beds.

"We are clearly seeing a rise in suspected dengue cases and a fairly large number of suspected H1N1. Some are confirmed. In fact, our hospital is over-booked. There is a waiting list for beds," said Dr Sudarshan Ballal, medical director and chief of medical advisory board, Manipal Hospital.

Dr Naresh Shetty, medical director, MS Ramaiah Hospital, said: "Every day we are getting about three to four suspected dengue cases with viral fever and low platelet count. Similarly in the paediatric ward, there are three to four admissions daily."

Dr George D'Souza, HoD, chest medicine, and chief of medical services at St John's Hospital, agreed that there has been increase in hemorrhagic fever. However, it has not been confirmed whether it is dengue. "H1N1 cases are also being reported in our hospital but numbers are not as high as last year," he said.
Figures from government hospitals are endorsing this. At least six patients come to KC General Hospital, Bowring Hospital and Victoria Hospital every day with symptoms of viral fever.

"All patients in the high-risk bracket should take the vaccine that is now easily available," Dr Ballal said.

Karnataka govt pursues 2-pronged strategy to tackle H1N1 and dengue outbreaks


With H1N1 and dengue are raising its ugly head in Karnataka, the state government has woken to the harsh reality and is aggressively pursuing a two-pronged strategy to tackle the infectious diseases on a war footing. In this regard, the state directorate of health and family welfare which constituted a Integrated Disease Surveillance committee has started to issue guidelines to hospitals to notify all admissions and deaths caused out of dengue.

In the case of H1N1, the government has launched a massive awareness drive. It has taken several measures to contain the disease including holding awareness drives and training programme at Anganwadis.

With over 216 lives claimed by H1N1 since its outbreak in 2009, Karnataka has managed to contain the numbers, according to a communiqu? from the department.

Last year the virus resulted in 135 cases but this year till date the number was 81. Of the 8,504 cases which reported of symptoms, 1,799 people were tested positive for H1N1. Around 1,664 cases underwent treatment at government hospitals.

This year, until August 2010, of the 5,384 cases who were tested for the condition, 1,201 patients were tested positive and 81 deaths.

According to the Karnataka health minister Sriramalu, in comparison to the other states in the country, the state has done better in controlling the disease and treating people. In Maharashtra, in May 2009, there were 612 deaths reported and in Gujarat it was 323 fatal cases.

Currently, there are three labs which carry out tests to detect H1N1. These are the Bangalore based National Institute of mental Heath (NIMHANS) and the Manipal Hospital besides Mangalore-based Kasturba Medical College. The state's s efforts to monitor the disease is carrying out extensively, he added.

In the case of dengue, the state guidelines to hospitals are prescribed in format based on the World Health Organization (WHO) format. There is an expert committee headed by Dr. Usha Wasunkar, director, directorate of the health and family welfare.

In order to reconfirm the positive cases at private labs, the government has now authorized state designated blood test units at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health and National Centre for communicable Diseases. In addition, the state has also identified the National Institute of Virology, Pune to handle the samples from government hospitals like NIMHANS, Victoria and Public Health Institute for dengue. In addition, this tests can also be done at existing 14 labs at Kolar, Mysore, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Belgaum, Shimoga, Bellary, Hubli, Chitradurga, Udupi, Hassan, Tumkur, Bijapur and Raichur.
