"There was no eruption. If there had been an eruption, our equipment near the crater would have been damaged," said Surono, head of the Centre for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

Earlier on Saturday, centre officials said their monitoring instruments near the crater had shown an eruption, but this was impossible to confirm visually because of heavy cloud cover.

Surono said incessant tremors and a dramatic rise in the temperature of the crater lake prompted volcanologists at Mount Kelud to flee their post fearing for their safety.

"Temperatures rose 2 degrees celsius in a day. This was an extremely sharp increase. On other volcanoes such phenomena would have resulted in heat clouds," Surono said.

Umar Rosadi, a scientist monitoring the volcano, said he and 17 colleagues had returned to their post after tremors subsided.

"There has not been an eruption. All of our equipment works normally," he told Reuters.

When Mount Kelud erupted in 1990 at least 30 people were killed. In 1919, about 5,000 died as Kelud ejected scalding water from its crater lake.

An estimated 350,000 people live within 10 km (6 miles) of the volcano which is about 90 km southwest of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city and one of its busiest airports.

In Sugihwaras, a village 8 km from the crater that suffered casualties and was badly damaged in 1990, many people panicked when they heard the reports that Kelud had erupted.

"The mosque announced that Kelud had erupted and there was a half hour to evacuate," said Ngatijo, a villager.

The authorities have been monitoring the volcano for several weeks and raised its alert status to the highest level about two weeks ago when its activity increased.

Indonesia has the highest number of active volcanoes of any country and sits on a belt of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire."

Kelud spewed white ash as high as 500 meters, Saut Simatupang, head of the agency, said today in a telephone interview.
``The eruption isn't over,'' Simatupang said. ``What we saw this morning was a small eruption.''
The temperature in the crater lake rose to 60.7 degrees Celsius (141 Fahrenheit) from 43.9 degrees yesterday, he said. At a depth of 15 meters (49 foot) the temperature jumped to 66.1 degrees Celsius from 45.9.
Indonesian authorities raised the alert level for Mount Kelud, a 1,731-meter volcano in East Java province, to the highest on Oct. 16. Indonesia is located on the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and geological fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin. The country had two of the world's largest eruptions in the past 200 years, Mount Tambora in 1815 and Krakatau in the Sunda Straits in 1883.
Authorities have evacuated more than 7,000 people from high risk areas to 44 shelter points, the Indonesian Health Ministry said. The government has put 17 health posts on standby.
``Ambulances and health workers are on full alert,'' Rustam S. Pakaya, head of crisis management at the Health Ministry, said in a text-message late yesterday.
Mount Kelud last erupted in 1990, killing 30 people.

Indonesia volcano eruption imminent despite false alarm: scientist
Bliotar, Indonesia (ANTARA News) - A day after a false alarm on Indonesia's Mount Kelut led to panic among residents on its slopes, the volcano is showing signs of an imminent eruption, a scientist said Sunday.

"An eruption is now very, very much possible, although so far it has not yet happened," said Agus Budianto, a geologist monitoring the activities of the volcano in the densely populated East Java province.

On Saturday, continuous tremors beneath the volcano became so strong that they could no longer be read on seismological instruments, leading scientists to evacuate their posts and warn an eruption appeared to have occurred.

They could not confirm it visually as the top of the historically deadly mountain was shrouded by clouds but their warning led residents still in the danger zone to flee in fear for their lives.

Budianto said: "There was no lava or ash emitted by the volcano." But the volcano's behaviour on Sunday indicated an eruption was still imminent, he added.

"Besides the rising earthquakes and tremors, we are also witnessing a new phenomenon -- smoke rising from the crater lake and the temperature of the water continuously rising," he told AFP.

A 15-metre (yard) deep lake fills the volcano's crater.

"All these developments show that the volcano has reached some sort of point of no return," he added.

Tens of thousands of people have already been evacuated from the fertile slopes of Mount Kelut, just 90 kilometres (56 miles) from Indonesia's second city of Surabaya, but some residents have refused to leave their homes.

MOUNT KELUD, Indonesia Nov 4, 2007 (AP)

A deadly Indonesian volcano spewed clouds of white smoke Sunday as the temperature of its crater lake soared. Thousands of residents defied warnings of a major eruption, choosing to tend sugar cane crops and livestock on its slopes.
The top scientist monitoring Mount Kelud said the temperature of its crater lake had reached 168 degrees a rise of more than 75 degrees over 24 hours, indicating a blast could be imminent.
The spike indicated magma within the volcano was close to breaking through to the surface, possibly sending a torrent of mud, ash and rock known as lahar pouring down the mountain, said Surono, who uses a single name
Despite the threat, authorities said 25,000 people were ignoring evacuation orders and remained in the danger zone around Kelud. There was no attempt made to stop people from traveling inside a 6-mile zone around the peak that officials said is off-limits.
"If I live in a shelter, I can't make money," said Buhirin, a 74-year-old farmer living well within the danger zone. "I have the courage to stay because I have experienced three Kelud eruptions. I know where the lahar will flow."
Kelud one of more than 100 active volcanos in Indonesia has been on the highest alert level for more than two weeks, but on Saturday recorded a spike in activity that led scientists to wrongly declare an eruption had begun.
The mountain is in the heart of densely populated Java island.
Surono said the extreme heat in the lake was creating a cloud of steam and smoke some 1,600 feet high.
While warning of a possible eruption, scientists have also said a blast may be small or gradual or might not happen at all given the unpredictable nature of the 5,679-foot mountain.
In 1990, Mount Kelud killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds. In 1919, a powerful explosion that could be heard hundreds of miles and killed at least 5,160.
For weeks, authorities have pleaded with villagers to move to tent camps or government buildings, but have faced resistance. Many people have insisted on staying behind to tend crops or look after their houses.
"I could die of tiredness if I have to go back and forth to a refugee camp," said Mesmesan, a 74-year-old farmer. "I am old and I am positive that Kelud will not tear apart our villages."
Some villagers apparently believe a local myth that the mountain will not erupt if residents turn off all the lights and speak softly.
"They are being very foolish," said Sigit Raharjo, a spokesman for the local government close to the mountain. "All we can do is ask them to leave."
Indonesia is spread across 17,500 islands and is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes because of its location within the so-called "Ring of Fire" a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.
At least three volcanoes are currently erupting elsewhere in the country, including Mount Anak Krakatoa, which lies off the northern tip of Java island. The mountain was formed after the famous Krakatoa volcano erupted in 1883, killing thousands, but is not seen as at risk of a major blast.:tiphat: http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=3818000

Magma pushing through Indonesian volcano`s crater

Sugihwaras, Indonesia (ANTARA News) - Indonesia's steaming Mount Kelud volcano was dangerously close to an eruption on Monday as magma pushed through its blocked crater causing boiling water to spill down its sides, a volcanologist said on Monday.

Water levels in the crater lake have also fallen because of cracks on its surface, damaging essential equipment used to monitor Mount Kelud, which has been on the verge of an eruption for several weeks.

"Increased underground magma movement has built up pressure on the blocked entrance, causing the bottom of the lake to rise and crack," Saut Simatupang, an official at the Centre for Volcanology and Geological and Hazard Mitigation, told Reuters.

Authorities have been monitoring the 1,731-metre (5,700-foot) volcano for several weeks and raised its alert status to the highest level about two weeks ago as its activity increased and an eruption appeared imminent.

An estimated 350,000 people live within 10 km (6 miles) of the volcano, which is about 90 km southwest of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city and one of its busiest airports.

The deadly volcano spewed ash about 500 metres into the air on Sunday, a day after confusion over whether it had already started erupting.

Officials at the vulcanology centre said on Saturday that the volcano had erupted while hidden by heavy cloud cover, but later they said that an eruption had not in fact taken place.

Scientists have suggested that hardened lava from previous eruptions could be blocking the release of magma, and warn this could burst out once sufficient energy has built up.

Stop measuring temperatur water's crater

A scientist monitoring the volcano said that authorities have stopped measuring the water temperature in the crater lake since Sunday afternoon because of the damaged equipment.

"We stopped measuring the temperature of the crater lake after our equipment broke," said Umar Rosadi, the scientist monitoring the volcano's activity.

"We are now left with four seismic quake detectors and two deformation detectors."

Kelud, also known as Kelut, means "sweeper" in Javanese, a reference to the fact that when it erupts, it sweeps away everything in its path.

When it last erupted in 1990 at least 30 people were killed, while about 5,000 died in 1919 when it spewed scalding water from its crater lake.

Indonesia has the highest number of active volcanoes of any country, sitting on a belt of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire". (*)

Indonesian volcano building up awesome amount of energy: scientists

Monday, November 5, 2007

By IRWAN FIRDAUS, AP

MOUNT KELUD, Indonesia -- Indonesia's deadly Mount Kelud spat out fresh clouds of smoke Monday while scientists warned any eruption would likely be much larger than the last time it blew its top.

At least two more of Indonesia's approximately 100 active volcanoes also were spewing smoke, with one of them - Anak Krakatoa - firing out red-hot stones and lava as well, illustrating the powerful seismic forces at work in the nation.

But authorities were most worried about Kelud on Java island because of its deadly history, including a 1919 explosion that killed thousands.

The temperature of the crater lake on Mount Kelud was so great that nearby monitoring equipment was no longer working, said Surono, one of 16 volcanologists watching over the peak 24 hours a day.

Despite the threat, there was little sense of panic on Kelud's slopes, witnesses said.

While several thousand people have fled to government shelters, authorities said Sunday that around 25,000 others were ignoring evacuation orders and remained in the danger zone around Kelud.

Officials have made no attempts to prevent people from traveling inside a 10-kilometer (6-mile) zone around the peak that the local government say is off-limits.

"I feel it is OK to stay here," said Sukirno, who was tending papaya plants some 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the peak. "No one can guarantee our safety apart from ourselves."

Kelud has been on the highest alert level for more than two weeks, but since Friday scientists have been warning an eruption may be imminent based on the frequency of tremors shaking the mountain and the temperature of it lake.

Emerge the NEW ISLAND in the middle of the KELUD CRATER

Metrotvnews.com, Kediri: emerged the new island in the middle of the crater of the Kelud Mountain, East Java.

The island was formed from sumbatan lava in 1990 that was pushed went out when the tremor earthquake happening over scale on November 3 set.
\the Island with a diameter approximately 100 meter,\said Chairman Tim Tanggap of the Emergency, Umar Rusadi during the Sub Bidang Pengamatan Head joint press conference of the Volcano, Agus Budianto in the Ngancar Subdistrict, Kabupaten Kediri, East Java, on Monday (5/11).

While the smoke that blew from the middle of the crater, emerged from partition gaps of the island. At this time the height of the smoke reached 800 metre from the crater lip.

According to the team of the observer Kelud, the development of this Kelud activity referred in three possibilities.

Firstly
, the new island emergence as the peak of the Kelud activity uptil now.
Secondly, retakan to the plug magma in island gaps could make crater water enter and met magma, so as to cause very big energy.
Finally, the accumulation magma under Kelud could cause the very big eruption

Till the afternoon, the tremor earthquake continually happened with aplitudo maximal 13 millimetre. Recorded also by 87 times and one volcanic earthquake time of the bellows earthquake shallow.

In the meantime, the team monitored Kelud stating thin ash that yesterday emerged in a radius of seven half kilometre around Kelud was volcanic ash that was carried smoke bellows from the middle of the crater.

Ash blankets town near Indonesian volcano

Blitar, Indonesia (ANTARA News) - A thin layer of ash blanketed a town in the shadow of a simmering volcano in Indonesia's East Java on Monday causing panic, but it came from a second volcano kilometres away, officials said.

The town of Blitar is located outside a 10-kilometre danger zone around the peak of Mount Kelud, where officials predict a powerful and potentially devastating eruption might occur at any time.

Its residents initially feared the worst when ash drifted over the town, Blitar district spokesman Sukamtono said.

"We have checked with the volcano monitoring team, and they say that the ash does not come from Kelud, but from Semeru," he told AFP, referring to a volcano about 90 kilometres (55 miles) away.

Semeru has been spewing ash on and off for months, scientists saying that the volcano's activities were still considered normal and not dangerous.

Meanwhile scientists said they were baffled by the behaviour of Kelud, with the energy surging inside it surpassing that of its last eruption, in 1990.

Scientists abandoned their monitoring posts on Kelut's slopes on Saturday when tremors became so strong they could no longer be measured. They could not see the peak through heavy cloud but said they believed it was erupting.

However they later found that it had not.

Volcanologist Agus Budianto said that pressure inside Kelud was three to four times as strong as that which caused the last eruption, which killed 34 people.

That eruption created a blockage that magma has not been able to fully break through, lifting only some volcanic material under the crater lake and resulting in a column of steam rising from its surface, he said.

"All indications point to an eruption, but the fact is, there has so far been only a partial lifting of the lava dome at the top, as well as a strong drift of heated winds upwards," Budianto said.

The lifting of a portion of the crater to the south-southwest -- the direction evacuation efforts have focused on -- has resulted in water mixed with volcanic material gushing down the usually dry Bladak river bed.

Cracks resulting from the crust movements were providing an escape route for magmatic gases, he said, gradually reducing the pressure inside -- and meaning that it was possible no eruption would occur.

Underground tremors however were ongoing, he said, while the temperature of the crater lake has soared to 77.5 degrees Centigrade (172 degrees Fahrenheit), compared to 40 degrees when it erupted in 1990.

"This is something entirely new for Kelud," Budianto said.

A group of journalists who sneaked to the edge of the crater on Monday said that the lake had turned whitish and bubbles were forming every two minutes or so on its surface. A strong sulfuric odour also permeated the peak, though birds remained in the area, they said.

Authorities sealed off the mountain and tried to evacuate all 130,000 people living in the danger zone since it was put on high alert on October 16.

Many however have either refused to leave or returned to their homes and fields during the day to work. (*)

Re: Thousands to be evacuated as Indonesian volcano threatens to erupt

Indonesia volcano nears eruption

Scientists say the unpredictable volcano could erupt violently, or fizzle out competely [AFP]

Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano has moved closer to an eruption scientists say, as a magma dome began forming under its crater lake causing boiling water to spill down its sides.

Soaring temperatures in the lake has also damaged monitoring equipment used to gauge activity on the mountain that has been on the verge of an eruption for weeks.

Saut Simatupang, an official at Indonesia's Centre for Volcanology and Geological and Hazard Mitigation, told Reuters: "Increased underground magma movement has built up pressure on the blocked entrance, causing the bottom of the lake to rise and crack."

Efforts to estimate the size of the dome, already visible in the crater lake, were hampered by thick clouds of steam.

The area around Mount Kelud, among the deadliest of Indonesia's 100 active volcanoes, has been on the highest level of alert for more than two weeks.

Surono, one of 16 volcanologists monitoring activity at Mount Kelud around the clock, said the temperature in the lake was so great that their equipment nearby had stopped working.

Some 350,000 people live in the are around Mount Kelud and several thousand have been moved to government shelters.

However, tens of thousands more have ignored evacuation warnings, choosing to stay behind to tend their crops and livestock.

Scientists predict that Mount Kelud's eruption could be bigger than the one in 1990 which killed at least 30 people.

But the monitoring team has also said that given the unpredictable nature of the 1,731-m volcano a smaller or gradual eruption was possible, or it was possible that there would be no eruption at all.

Kelud, also known as Kelut, means "sweeper" in Javanese, a reference to the fact that when it erupts, it sweeps away everything in its path.

Indonesia is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes due to its location within a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, called the "Ring of Fire".

Activity

Officials were also concerned about increased activity at two other nearby volcanoes which were spewing hot ash, molten rock and clouds of dark smoke.

A few hundred kilometres away, Anak Krakatao, or the "Child of Krakatoa", fired pumice and lava onto its slopes off the northern tip of Java island.

Anak Krakatao was formed after a massive eruption at the giant Krakatao volcano in 1883.

That blast was heard nearly 3,200 kilometres away in Australia and sent surges of gas and burning ash which, combined with a tsunami, killed at least 36,000 people.

One other volcano, Mount Semeru, about 70 kilometres southeast of Mount Kelud, has sent bursts of ash showering down on nearby villages, coating buildings in and around the town of Blitar with a fine layer of ash.

No evacuations were ordered in the town.

JAKARTA, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait today began to spew red-hot lava flares 500 to 700 metres into the sky from its southern crater.

The volcano has been showing signs of increased activity for the past 15 days.

Chief of the volcano`s observation post, Anton, said the red-hot lava flares were triggered by the volcano`s increased activity.

According to data recorded by the volcano`s observation post, from midnight to 6am local time today, the volcano produced 74 clouds of ashes, followed by four deep volcanic quakes, 20 shallow volcanic quakes and four tremors.

Meanwhile, the Bandung-based Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre is still keeping the volcano`s status at the third level of alert.

"Due to the emission of ashes followed by volcanic quakes lasting three to six minutes, it is dangerous for tourists to get close to the volcano`s slopes. Visitors are only allowed to watch its activity from a distance of three kilometres," Anton was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

The Mt Kelud volcano on Java island is also on the verge of eruption, with a dome of magma said to be forming under a crater lake.

Indonesian workers rush to complete dam system at rumbling volcano

MOUNT KELUD, East Java (AP): Workers rushed to complete a system of dams Tuesday at one of Indonesia's deadliest volcanos, fearing an eruption could send a wave of superheated water, rock and ash surging down its slopes.

Volcanologists have warned that Mount Kelud on densely populated Java island could be on the verge of a major eruption, with a dome of magma forming under its crater lake.

Cement dams up to 20 meters high and six meters thick have been under construction for several months to channel the possible surge from the lake away from residential areas.

"They want us to finish the dams as quickly as possible," said Wagimin, a worker who like many Indonesians uses one name. If the volcano erupts while construction is under way, workers will rush to a nearby elevated road for safety, he said.

Authorities have attempted to evacuate tens of thousands of villagers from the danger zone since the mountain was put on high alert more than two weeks ago, but many have refused to stay in government shelters and are continuing to watch over their fields and homes.

Volcanologist Umar Rosadi said tremors were continuing under Kelud's crater, and bursts of smoke and soaring temperatures in its crater lake indicated it could soon erupt.

In 1990, Mount Kelud spewed searing fumes and lava that killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds. In 1919, a powerful explosion that reportedly could be heard hundreds of kilometers away killed at least 5,160. (*

Re: Thousands to be evacuated as Indonesian volcano threatens to erupt

The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa is among the most violent volcanic events in modern times (a VEI of 6, equivalent to 200 megatonnes of TNT ? about 13,000 times the yield of the Little Boy bomb which devastated Hiroshima, Japan). Concussive air waves from the explosions travelled seven times around the world.[8] The sky was darkened for days afterwards. Sea waves caused by the eruption were recorded as far away as the English Channel.[9] The explosion is considered to be the loudest noise ever recorded to be heard by humans.
