Authorities have responded to a rise in activity on Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait by placing the volcano on the second highest alert.

The Bandung-based Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center raised the alert status of Mount Anak Krakatau on Friday, making it the fourth volcano in the country to have its status raised in recent weeks.

The volcano was formed in the massive Krakatau eruption in 1883, which killed tens of thousands of people and was the largest explosion in recorded history.

Disaster center head Surono said that according to observations from the Kalianda volcano monitoring post in South Lampung and a monitoring post in Psauran, in Serang regency, the volcano had been spewing smoke since Oct. 23.

He said further observation confirmed there had been eruption.

"But there is no need to worry about Mount Anak Krakatau's activity. It has a short (eruption) sequence, which is around four years.

"Since it erupts so many times, it does not reserve enough energy to trigger a massive eruption. Fears of a tsunami can also be dismissed," Surono said in Bandung, West Java, on Saturday.

There are now three volcanoes around the country on the second highest alert status, as well as one on the highest alert.

Mount Soputan and Mount Karangetan, both in North Sulawesi, are on the same status as Anak Krakatau.

Mount Kelud in East Java is on top alert status, meaning an eruption is imminent.

The 305-meter high Mount Anak Krakatau is located in South Lampung regency in Lampung province.

Surono said authorities had looked at the data and determined there was no danger of an eruption by Anak Krakatau large enough to create a tsunami.

He said his office had recommended the Lampung and Banten administrations warn fishermen, residents and tourists to stay at least three kilometers from the volcano.

"We want them to follow the order without believing the rumors of a tsunami," Surono said.

Meanwhile, Mount Soputan in Tombatu district in South Minahasa regency remains on the second highest alert even though it is spewing smoke about 200 meters into the air.

"We are keeping Soputan on second highest alert status since the eruption is taking place far from people's homes and is not too dangerous. There is no need for people to panic, but they should listen to instructions from officials," Surono said.

The center has ordered people to stay at least six kilometers from the crater of the volcano, he said.

He said the center would evaluate Mount Kelud's status within the next three or four days.

"But the evaluation does not mean we will downgrade the volcano's status. Our team still work on the data to produce the best solution for everyone."

There are also nine volcanoes in the country on third highest alert status.

They are Mount Kerinci in Jambi province; Mount Gamkonora on Halmahera Island in Maluku; Mount Dukono and Mount Ibu in North Maku; Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta; Mount Semeru in East Java; Mount Talang in Solok regency, West Sumatra; Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi; and Mount Papandayan in Garut, West Java.

Hundreds of deep volcanic tremors shook Mt. Kelud - tenfold the normal number - and its crater lake was the hottest since the mountain was put on high alert last month, said Surono, a senior government volcanologist who goes by a single name.

"Kelud is entering its critical phase," Surono said in a telephone interview, indicating that an eruption could occur at any time.

In 1990, Mt. Kelud killed more than 30 people and injured hundreds. In 1919, a powerful explosion that could be heard hundreds of kilometers away destroyed dozens of villages and killed at least 5,160.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano in East Java is in a critical phase and could erupt any time after being shaken by more than 1,000 tremors over the last two days, the country's top volcano expert said on Friday.

An estimated 350,000 people live within 10 km (6 miles) of the volcano and when it last erupted in 1990 at least 30 people were killed.

Authorities raised the alert at Mount Kelud, one of Indonesia's deadliest volcanoes, to maximum two weeks ago amid signs of an imminent eruption.

"Kelud is in a critical phase. It could erupt now," Surono, head of Indonesia's centre for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, told Reuters by telephone from the capital Jakarta.

Another official near the site said there had been more than 600 tremors on Thursday and hundreds more overnight.

"Tremors stopped for a moment but they have started again. From midnight until 6 a.m. we recorded 559 tremors," said Umar Rosadi, a vulcanologist at a monitoring post near Kelud.

"We continue to monitor the activity, but we can't tell when an eruption will happen."

He said magma was 700 meters (2,296 feet) below the crater.

In 1919, about 5,000 died as Kelud ejected scalding water from its crater lake.

After the alert was first raised recently, more than 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate from around the volcano, 675 km (420 miles) east of the capital Jakarta but only 90 km (55 miles) southwest of Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya.

Thousands have left from a 10-km (6-mile) zone around Kelud, but many had returned home, fearing for the safety of their possessions.

Some residents living on the slopes of the volcano have refused to leave, saying they know how to take care of themselves in the event of an eruption.

Their representatives have signed an agreement with officials stating that they will not hold the government responsible should anything happen to them.

In recent weeks, there have been periods of intense seismic activity at the volcano followed by calm, although the high temperature of the crater lake and other observations have led experts to keep the alert status at maximum.

On October 19, there was a surge in tremors at Kelud, but the activity later subsided and there was no eruption.

Some scientists have suggested that hardened larva from previous eruptions could be blocking the release of magma, but warn that it could burst out when the energy has built up enough.

Indonesia has faced a series of deadly natural disasters in recent years and has the highest number of active volcanoes of any country. It sits on a belt of intense volcanic and seismic activity know as the "Pacific Ring of Fire."

Indonesian officials were also closely monitoring three other volcanoes for increased activity.

I don't know much about volcanos. How bad can this one blow? I can see where this guy might be getting omens; it's really kind of nerve-wracking watching it shake, temp raising and just waiting for something to happen.

A few hours ago, tremors started to pick up once again, but now they broke the maximum level, which means there is an active eruption. There is no sign yet of ash clouds or lava showing up, but that might be just a matter of time. The crater is filled with a big lake and the weather around the volcano is bad as well.:yinyang:

SUGIHWARAS, Indonesia (Reuters) - Indonesia's volcano center said Mount Kelud in East Java has not erupted, as earlier reported on Saturday.

"There was no eruption. If there had been an eruption, our equipment near the crater would have been damaged," said Surono, head of the Center for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

Earlier on Saturday, center officials said their monitoring instruments near the crater had shown an eruption, but this was impossible to confirm visually because of heavy cloud cover.

Surono said incessant tremors and a dramatic rise in the temperature of the crater lake prompted volcanologists at Mount Kelud to flee their post fearing for their safety.

"Temperatures rose 2 degrees celsius in a day. This was an extremely sharp increase. On other volcanoes such phenomena would have resulted in heat clouds," Surono said.

Umar Rosadi, a scientist monitoring the volcano, said he and 17 colleagues had returned to their post after tremors subsided.

"There has not been an eruption. All of our equipment works normally," he told Reuters.

When Mount Kelud erupted in 1990 at least 30 people were killed. In 1919, about 5,000 died as Kelud ejected scalding water from its crater lake.

MOUNT KELUD, Indonesia (AP) ? Villagers fled the slopes of one of Indonesia's deadliest volcanos Saturday after seismic readings indicated that an eruption had started after weeks of heightened activity.

But Surono, a senior government volcanologist who goes by a single name, told el-Shinta radio station late Saturday that monitoring equipment close to the crater of Mount Kelud was still working, indicating that there had been no eruption.

"In reality Kelud did not erupt", Surono said.

The volcano in the heart of densely populated Java island was shrouded in fog and no visual confirmation of the eruption reports was possible before night fell, government seismologist Umar Rosadi said.

Scores of people, including women hauling babies in slings, descended from the mountain in police trucks and on bicycles and motorcycles. Some were in tears, and many wore masks to protect against volcanic ash.

"I am afraid because the authorities say this eruption will be worse than the ones that have come before," said Marsini, resident of a village three miles from the crater. "They say there may be poisonous gas. I am leaving now."

Rosadi and another government scientist said official monitors had left their posts after detecting continuous tremors.

For weeks, authorities have warned of an impending eruption and pleaded with villagers to move to tent camps or government buildings.

Thousands have evacuated villages closest to the crater but many people have insisted on staying behind to tend to crops or look after their houses.
