Lucknow A 16-year-old girl, who tested positive for swine flu virus on Monday night, died on Tuesday.

Akansha, a resident of Aliganj area, is the youngest and third patient to die from H1N1 virus in the state capital.

She was admitted to Vivekanand Polyclinic on November 27 with high fever. ?She was straightaway put on a ventilator in the ICU,? said Swami Muktinathanand, secretary, Vivekanand Polyclinic. ?We sent the samples for test to a private testing centre for quick results,? he added. ?The girl died with bilateral bronco pneumonia and tested positive for swine flu as well,? said Dr A K Shukla, Chief Medical Officer of Lucknow.

Meanwhile, health officials claimed Rae Bareli resident Amresh Sinha, who died on Monday, was infected with Influenza A virus and not H1N1. ?He tested negative for H1N1 but positive for Influenza A, a new virus,? said Dr R K Khanna, Director, Communicable and Vector-borne Disease. ?Till now, only two such cases have come up in the state, the other one from Lucknow,? he added.

Till now, 287 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the state. While the state Health department has admitted to only one swine flu death to date ? A K Singh, who died in Lucknow on September 14 ?three deaths from the H1N1 virus have been reported in the state. Experts believe with the drop in temperature, swine flu virus will proliferate and it is expected that the number of the cases will rise. ens

Five swine flu deaths were reported in the country Tuesday, taking the toll to 580, health authorities said here.

A record 198 new cases were also recorded. This takes the number of people affected with the virus to 18,396. While two deaths were reported from Rajasthan, one death each was recorded in Delhi, Punjab and Maharashtra.

According to officials, the death in Punjab had occurred earlier, but was confirmed Tuesday. In Punjab, four people have died due to the flu so far.

With the one death in Maharashtra, the toll in the state is 224 - the highest in the country. Forty six people have succumbed to the contagious virus in Rajasthan so far, officials added.

In the national capital, a 30-year-old pregnant woman died in a city hospital, taking the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) to 23, state health officials said.

?The woman was admitted to the Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Narain Hospital here Saturday with bad respiratory tract infection,? said Anjan Prakash, Delhi state nodal officer for swine flu.

?The woman died around 3.30 a.m. Tuesday. She was shifted here from another hospital after her condition deteriorated,? she said.

The capital recorded 98 new swine flu cases, taking the total number of people affected with the disease to 5,106, the highest in the country.

With rising flu cases, the Delhi government has decided to launch a fresh awareness campaign in the capital.

?Over the few days, we have been getting almost 100 cases of swine flu a day on an average. Yet, I won't call this number alarming because, as announced by WHO, with winters approaching the second wave of the flu will hit many more people,? said Mr. Prakash.

New cases in the country were also reported from Haryana (30), Maharashtra (20), Uttar Pradesh (13), Rajasthan (10) and Gujarat (4).

Agartala, Dec 2 (IANS) A young man died and as many as 60 people, including an army soldier, tested positive for swine flu in the northeast, an official report said here Wednesday.
?At least 45 people tested positive (laboratory confirmed cases) for swine flu in Assam, followed by eight in Meghalaya, four in Mizoram, two in Nagaland and one in Manipur. Few of them are now under treatment in government hospitals,? said the report of the union ministry of health and family care on influenza A (H1N1).

It said no fresh cases of the virus were reported in the past one month.

However, health officials and volunteers continue to screen incoming passengers at selected airports and people at border check posts.

Experts have expressed fear that a second wave of swine flu hitting the country would be worse than the first one.

The 28-year-old young man died of swine flu in October at a government hospital in Mizoram, making it the first and only death from H1N1 in the northeast.

The region reported its first swine flu case in early August when a 19-year-old Manipuri woman fencer and a 17-year-old Meghalaya footballer were tested positive for the swine flu disease.

The Manipuri fencer had returned from a competition in Singapore while the Meghalaya soccer player had returned from Britain. Both of them are now cured.

600 deaths from influenza A (H1N1) in India

04 of December 2009, 00:23 New Delhi, Dec. 4 (PL) 600 rose today the death toll in India due to influenza virus A (H1N1) since the first case was reported last May, An official source confirmed.

According to the report issued by the Ministry of Health yesterday reported four deaths and 252 new cases across the country, also rose to 18 thousand 872 The number of people affected by the pandemic.

Maharashtra is the most beaten by the disease in terms of number of deaths with 228, while 48 patients recorded four thousand.

In the territory of Delhi, where is located the capital city, however, have recorded four thousand 882 cases but the number of confirmed deaths to date laboratory is relatively low (25).

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization, influenza caused by influenza A (H1N1) has affected 526 thousand 60 people in 206 countries.

New Delhi: Six swine flu deaths, three of them in Rajasthan alone, were reported Friday, taking the toll from influenza A (H1N1) virus in India to 606, health authorities said here.

Also, a record 290 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious flu to 19,162.

With the three deaths, the toll in Rajasthan has gone up to 57. Two deaths were also reported from the national capital, taking the total toll in the Indian capital to 28.


One death was reported from Gujarat, taking the number of deaths due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the state to 47.


Meanwhile, Delhi reported 186 cases of swine flu Friday -- the highest for a single day - taking the number of people affected with the virus to 5,603. The national capital Thursday reported 176 cases of swine flu.


The number of people affected with the virus in Delhi is now the highest in the country.


'Two deaths were reported today (Friday). A 40-year-old woman, who was a resident of Guru Ramdas Nagar, died in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital,' Anjana Prakash, state's assistant nodal officer for swine flu cases, told IANS.


'Another woman died in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. She was 60 years old and was a resident of Janakpuri. Both did not have any travel history. Both of them came late to the hospital and were already suffering from severe respiratory problems,' she added.


'Till date, samples from 90,068 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 19,162 of them have been found positive,' said a statement issued here.


New cases were also reported from Rajasthan (47), Maharashtra (20), Haryana (34), Uttar Pradesh (16), Tamil Nadu (14) and West Bengal (1).

Nine swine flu deaths were reported on Sunday, including four from Rajasthan, the toll due to influenza A (H1N1) virus in India to 627, health authorities said here.

Also, 144 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious flu to 20,165.

With the four deaths, the toll in Rajasthan has gone up to 67. Two deaths were reported from Gujarat, taking the number of fatalities due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the state to 49.

Two deaths were also reported from Maharastra Sunday taking the toll in the state to 232.

One death was also reported from the national capital, taking the total toll here to 30.

The number of people affected with the virus in Delhi is now the highest in the country at 5,826 as per Saturday evening.

"One death was reported today (Friday). A 25-year-old male was brought dead to the Ambedkar Hospital," Anjana Prakash, Delhi's assistant nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

One death was also reported from the union territory of Chandigarh Saturday.

"Till date, samples from 91,192 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 21.5 percent of them have been found positive," said a statement issued here.

New cases were also reported from Rajasthan (20), Kerala (6), Haryana (14), Uttar Pradesh (six), Uttarakhand (three), Gujarat (two), Pondicherry (one) and Chhattisgarh(one).

MUMBAI: As temperatures in the city dip, out-patient departments (OPDs) are seeing an increase in viral infection and fever cases. General practitioners say viral fever cases have doubled over the last fortnight.

"Since temperatures have gone down and there is smog in the mornings, there has been certainly a rise in the numbers of people suffering from viral fever, cough and cold. In fact, the numbers have doubled from the last fortnight," said Dr Hemant Thacker from Jaslok Hospital.

Not just hospitals, clinics too have a long line of people waiting to be treated for minor ailments like running noses and croaky throats. "We have about 40-50 patients suffering from viral infections everyday," said Dr Vasant Shenoy, who has a clinic in Santacruz (W).

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) agrees with the doctors. "There is about a 25% increase in viral cases as compared to the last month. In a big city like Mumbai, where either malaria or flu keeps striking people, there is nothing one can do to avoid falling sick besides maintaining proper hygiene," said Dr Hozie Kapadia, secretary of IMA, Maharashtra.

Even though a rise in viral cases is normal at this time of the year, doctors say the pollution-mixed mist in the morning that can be a cause of concern for asthma and chronic bronchitis patients. "Many patients come with complaints of problems in swallowing, broken voice and itchiness in the respiratory tract only in the morning. This is happening because of the mist mixed with pollution that settles over the city at night," said Dr Thacker adding that the people who already suffer from respiratory problems need to be careful. "We advise all our patients who suffer from asthma or chronic bronchitis problems to increase their inhaler dosages and to take vaccinations against influenza," he said.

A woman and a 12-year-old girl have died of swine flu in Uttarakhand, health officials confirmed today, as 13 more people tested positive for the deadly virus.

With this, the total number of deaths due to the infection has risen to eight in the state, officials said.

Paramjit Kaur of Udham Singh Nagar district and Shalu of Dehra Dun, who died at Doon hospital here on December 4, had swine flu, said nodal officer Pankaj Jain.

Jain said 13 new cases of swine flu have come to light in the hill state. Some of the serious patients are being referred to Delhi for better treatment, the officials said.

In the meantime, the state government has asked all the hospitals to maintain stocks of Tamiflu tablets while the doctors have been told to remain alert.

This represents a further increase in both the rate of confirmed cases and fatalities. Fatalities in Rajasthan continue to accelerate. This represents a reduction in confirmed cases, however fatalities are continuing at close to record levels. Government workers in parts of India were given a holiday during the Christmas period, and I suspect that this week?s reports are incomplete. Fatalities in December have exceeded those from the initial wave in September. Northern India continues to account for the majority of fatalities. Data on fatalities from Rajasthan remains difficult to come by. Average age increased for the fifth week in a row.

This represents a reduction in confirmed cases, however fatalities are continuing at record levels. It?s possible that a shortened work week has reduced the number of cases tested. North Western India ? Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan- accounts for 67% of the fatalities. Assam recorded its first fatality. Average age dropped for the first time in 6 weeks.

During the week from January 2nd to January 8th 3,732 samples were taken of which 1,571 (42.1%) were positive for H1N1. This rise in positive cases over last week is partly a result of a periodic data report from private hospitals in Delhi. This brings the total number of cases to 27,610. 77 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,082. (One fatality from Assam was accidentally omitted from my last report). Fatalities from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal are reduced. Gujarat and neighboring Maharashtra continue to have a significant winter wave. Confirmed cases in Northern States are trending downwards. Average age of fatalities is unchanged. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

During the week from January 9th to January 15th 2,481 samples were taken of which 501 (20.0%) were positive for H1N1 (Total 28,111). This represents a significant reduction in new cases, and is one of the lowest weekly totals on record. However, both Maharashtra and Karnataka showed an increase in new cases. 68 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,150. Northern India accounts for most fatalities with 93% coming from 4 States: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Delhi. This represents a further reduction in new cases, and is one of the lowest weekly totals on record. Maharashtra (129), Gujarat (117) and Delhi (44) account for 72% of all new cases. 55 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,205. 75% of new fatalities come from Gujarat (33) and Maharashtra (8). During the week from January 22nd to January 29th 250 samples were found positive for H1N1 (Total 28,762). This represents a further reduction in new cases, and is one of the lowest weekly totals on record. Maharashtra (91) and Gujarat (71) account for 65% of all new cases. 42 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,247. This is the lowest weekly toll in two months. 67% of new fatalities come from Gujarat (21) and Maharashtra (7). Dadra and Nagar Haveli registered its first case, which also was its first fatality. During the week from January 29th to February 5th, 1,460 samples were taken of which 261 (17.9%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 29,023). This represents a slight increase from last week. Maharashtra (126) and Gujarat (39) account for 63% of all new cases. 49 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,296. Disturbingly, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka all experienced an increase in death rate this week and accounted for 88% of all fatalities. Gujarat recorded only 39 new cases, but had 23 confirmed fatalities. Graphs of trends in fatalities and confirmed cases for selected states are at the bottom of this report.

During the week from February 6th to February 12th, 1,649 samples were taken of which 245 (14.9%) were found positive for H1N1 (Total 29,268). This represents a reduction from last week. Maharashtra (108) alone accounts for 44% of all new cases. 35 new fatalities were recorded bringing the total to 1,331. Maharashtra?s death rate continues to increase. Gujarat recorded only 34 new cases, but had 12 confirmed fatalities. The fatality trend in Gujarat is downward.
