949 new cases (total 12,605) and 29 new deaths (total 424) were reported in the week October 10th to October 16th, represents a significant reduction both in new cases and in deaths. Reporting in the media is becoming spotty in Karnataka and Maharashtra with not all fatalities being reported in detail. The Eastern State of Mizoram reported its first fatality. Average age rose for the second week.

Just in case anyone is wondering about the difference between my count and the official count. Newspaper reports early on tend to precede the official count. For example PTI is now reporting 6 confirmed deaths for Rajasthan, but the official count remains at 1. There were also some controversial deaths in one State of residents of other States. Puducherry, Kerala, Haryana, Karnataka and Delhi were all trying to push fatalities into other totals. I have tended to keep them in the place where they died.

I have also included several cases such as;
IN9: Adm. Noor private hospital 8/6. Died 8/11. Confirmed H1N1 post mortem. Not officially counted as she died of bacterial pneumonia.
IN56: Adm. private nursing home Aug 10, fever & chills. Transferred to private hospital, administered 5 days Tamiflu. Died Aug 19. Confirmed H1N1 Aug 21. Not officially counted as she died of bacterial pneumonia.
and

627 new cases (total 13,232) and 34 new deaths (total 458) were reported in the week October 17th to October 23rd, represents a significant reduction in new cases, but a slight increase in fatalities. Details on fatalities have once again been difficult to come by from Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh both recorded their first fatalities. Average age rose for the third week.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The state government has blamed private hospitals for the spurt in swine flu deaths in the port city. Making no bones about the
government's displeasure, medical health top official L V Subrahamanyam said the main reason behind the swine flu deaths in Vizag has been the lack of initiative from private hospitals. "Four deaths out of five reported in the district were due to the delay in treatment and the patients were sent to the government hospital in a serious condition," he said. To address the lack of co-ordination and support from the private hospitals, Subrahamanyam held a meeting with the representatives of the private hospitals.

He said 10 more beds would be added to the present bed strength of 10 in the communicable diseases hospital to treat swine flu patients. The official said a special team which came from Hyderabad found, after conducting the epidemiological examination, that the patients were not given proper medication when they complained of suspected swine flu symptoms.

He also said the government has sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore to install ventilators in government hospitals and Vaidya Vidhana Parishad medical colleges in every district. "The government has also released another Rs 1 crore for awareness campaigns to tackle swine flu in the state," he added.

How about an overview of the CFR?
If one takes 13,232 cases confirmed and 458 deaths, doesn't that yield an official death rate/ casualty fatality rate around 3-3.46 %, around the official death rate from the 1918 pandemic? There must be many more unofficial cases and unknown deaths, but I was just trying to understand how to view this information. Thanks one and all...you're doing a great job!:applause:

The Central government has not been publishing anything like our ILI charts. As far as I can find out, there are no official figures for seasonal flu in India, which indicates very little surveillance infrastructure. Some states have been more forthcoming in their reporting.
Over 40% of fatalities have come from Maharashtra. Population 97 million.
1.1 million individuals have been screened, producing 55,174 suspected, 4,014confirmed cases and 179 fatalities as of October 20. That would give a cfr of 0.3%, but I wouldn't put any faith in that number. There are undoubtedly tens of thousands of cases not reported, and what the US calls syndromic deaths are not being tallied.
Reporting from Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir has been interrupted by doctor's strikes. Some private hospitals have not been diagnosing H1N1 for fear of social stigma. Large areas are still tribal and mystery viruses take days or weeks to be identified.

Recorded pneumonia fatalities are a few thousand;


"India recorded a total of 7.8 lakh780,000 pneumonia cases in 2005 and 3,513 deaths. In 2006, the total cases stood at 6.8 lakh with 3,342 deaths. In 2007, both of the number of cases and deaths fell in comparison to the previous two years. While 6.6 lakh pneumonia cases were recorded in 2007, the deaths stood at 2,865."

I agree that the ILI and Pneumonia deaths, and all sudden deaths not counted as caused by other disease where samples were taken and confirmed Ought to be presumptive of H1N1 during this pandemic. I also agree that there's many cases not being counted INTENTIONALLY perhaps as well. Here's an article in Tamil Nadu saying just that:

COIMBATORE: Outside a small house in a village on the outskirts of Coimbatore, P Nanjammal mourns the death of her only son. It began with a fever, she said, that wouldn't go away. After consulting a local homoeopathy doctor
and then going to a private hospital, her son P Thangaraj, 32, was finally admitted to the Government Coimbatore Medical College Hospital where he died in a few days.
"The doctors told me it was swine flu. I didn't know it could kill people so easily. They also told me that if I or my daughter-in-law or granddaughter developed fever or body pains we must come there immediately,'' she said.

Her son's funeral was three weeks ago. And yet, as of October 21, the district of Coimbatore reported zero deaths due to swine flu.

In the last few months, the influenza
A (H1N1) virus, popularly known as swine flu, seems to have receded. There is very little about it in the news and, according to doctors, the virus has passed its peak. It is expected to surge again in December though, when cold weather hits.

The State has reported four deaths in all since the entry of the virus in the country, a relatively small figure considering it has had one of the highest number of laboratory confirmed infections in the country - 1,514 as of October 22.

Of these, 332 were from Coimbatore, though no deaths were reported as of October 21.

According to doctors at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital however, there have been at least eight such deaths in the last three months.

In August this year, after several cases were confirmed from people abroad visiting the city, the hospital began separate outpatient services for suspected swine flu cases. Patients swarmed the department and everyone with the least sniffle reported in. "We were getting more than 100 patients a day and after a point did not have the manpower or resources to continue the clinic,'' a doctor said.

After a few weeks though, the numbers subsided. From then on, patients who came in and who were suspected to be harbouring the disease were admitted to the quarantine ward and their swabs sent for testing.

"Even now we see one or two suspected cases every week. In the last three months we have seen a growing number of deaths. All of them have been due to swine flu but the cause of death has been reported as either simple pneumonia or other such diseases.

In one case, the records were actually changed to remove the mention of H1N1 from them,'' another doctor said. On October 23 and 24, two other patients who were H1N1 positive died while four more suspected to have the disease were admitted, doctors said.

The scary part is, according to the doctors, not so much the deaths themselves but that the concealment could lead to an epidemic, as families were not being warned.
Four days ago, 49-year-old Palanisamy, a businessman from Tirupur died in the hospital. In his case, not revealing the cause of death was made simple by the fact that the report confirming he was positive for swine flu only came some hours after his death. By then, the family had taken the body away for the funeral.

"We were never told the exact cause of his death. He was young and healthy with no prior diseases. We knew it was some kind of fever but they did not tell us what,'' said his wife P Banumathi.

A doctor at the hospital said the Palanisamy's test results were positive for H1N1. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's guidelines, Palanisamy's family should have been informed and district health authorities should have maintained an active surveillance on the family members to ensure they did not develop the infection.

Three days after his death, no government health official has visited the family, Banumathi said. They do not even know that Palanisamy died of swine flu or that his wife, 12-year-old daughter and six-year-old son may be at risk of contracting the disease.

"A few weeks ago, another man who was positive for H1N1 died at the hospital. His family did not know the cause of death. Two weeks or so later, his wife and son came to the hospital and were positive as well. We don't know whom they may have been in contact with or how many more people could be infected,'' said a doctor.

Safety measures for the protection of families and medical personnel too are few. The standard operating procedure as laid down in the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is barely followed. "The gowns, goggles, gloves and shoe covers, all of which are supposed to be provided to persons entering the isolation ward are not there. Initially three-layered masks were available but the ward ran out of these. Many doctors and medical staff have to use single-layer masks. As for the N95, I have not seen it yet,'' said a doctor.

Without personal protective equipment, the staff at the hospital is also at risk of contracting the infection especially while collecting swabs for testing or incubating a severely ill patient.[B] The doctors also said that since the isolation ward did not have ventilators or oxygen supply, very ill patients who were H1N1 positive had to be moved to the intensive care unit in order to be treated.
"Even here safety measures are barely followed. The ICU has other patients who are also very sick with various illnesses. There is no protection at all and all of them are potentially at risk of developing the infection,'' a doctor said. [/B]
Also, patients who were suspected of having the disease were put in the isolation ward along with patients who already had the disease, which meant that even if the suspected case turned out negative, they could still contract the infection as they were in the same room as people who had it, another doctor said. Since there was a shortage of beds here, some sick patients had to lie on the floor.

Several doctors and paramedical staff have also fallen ill and tested positive for H1N1. Since the government medical college does not have testing facilities, tests for H1N1 have been outsourced. The city has two government certified laboratories that are capable of testing for H1N1. However, patients have to pay for these tests and as they are expensive (around Rs 5,000 or more), the hospital also sends samples to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Delhi for testing.

Both labs also take in samples from people who walk in and suspect they may have contracted the disease. One lab has tested over 500 samples to date. No statistics are maintained by health authorities on the number of samples sent for testing.

District health authorities were reluctant to speak on the subject to the media. When contacted, a senior hospital official, who did not want to be named, said that all protocols were being followed in the treatment and management of the disease. He said that three-layered and N95 masks were available in the isolation ward and that all safety measures were being followed. ?Every time there is a positive case we take down all of the details of the family and ensure that they are kept track of and advised about the disease. The State government has decided that prophylactic medication will not be given to the family. So we tell them to report to the hospital if they develop any symptoms,? he said.

If the patients were from another district, the local district health authorities were informed to monitor the family, he added. He said that ventilators were available and there was a pre-quarantine ward for suspected cases and a separate isolation ward for the positive cases. He also said that schools and colleges were being monitored as some positive cases had been reported among students.

?The government has decided not to allow home quarantine as most patients do not adhere to the rules. So patients are admitted and treated in hospital,?? he said.

Asked about the deaths, he said that no patients had died of confirmed H1N1. ?There have been some suspected deaths but no confirmed death due to H1N1 has occurred,?? he said.

Excellent find Roehl, thank you. I've been sitting on around 20 suspect cases that I have no confirmation for, this could explain some of those.

Snowy - Compared to the other health issues in India, I agree that H1N1 so far has been not as bad as could be expected. Let's keep our fingers crossed that a second wave will be equally mild.

1,893 new cases (total 15,125) and 65 new deaths (total 523) were reported in the three weeks from October 23rd to November 13th. The majority of cases and fatalities continue to come from North Western India, predominantly Maharashtra, but Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh have recently experienced increased cases suggesting the beginning of a winter wave. Southern states Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and especially Kerala have also registered fatalities in the past three weeks. Odisha (Orissa) recorded it’s first fatality – a doctor. The situation in Andhra Pradesh has calmed considerably with no fatalities recorded during this period. Reports from Pune suggest that several dozen fatalities with H1N1 symptoms tested negative and have not been officially tallied. Average age dropped slightly.

Four swine flu deaths were reported in India Tuesday, taking the toll due to the Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 530, health department officials said here.One death each was reported from Karnataka, Goa, Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

With that one death in Karnataka, the toll in the southern state has jumped to 119.

The toll is now five each in Goa and Uttarakhand. In Gujarat, it has now gone up to 45. However, Maharashtra, which recorded the first swine flu death Aug 3, tops the list with the highest number of deaths so far - 214.

Also, 176 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious virus to 15,726.

"Till date, samples from 80,327 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country, and 15,726 of them have been found positive," said a statement issued here.

Delhi reported 62 new cases Tuesday, taking the total number of people affected with the flu in the Indian capital to 3,837.

In Maharashtra, 25 new cases were reported. With this, the total number of people tested positive for the flu in the state has jumped to 3,828.

Ten more people have died of influenza A (H1N1) in India, taking the toll due to the swine flu pandemic in the country so far to 553, an official statement said here today.

Three of the deaths were reported during the day in Rajasthan and one in Karnataka. Besides, four other deaths that occurred in recent days in Maharashtra and one each in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have been confirmed as cases of swine flu, the statement said.

Of the total number of swine flu deaths in the country, Maharashtra now accounts for 220, while 120 lives have been lost in Karnataka, 50 in Andhra Pradesh, 46 in Gujarat, 33 in Rajasthan, 25 in Kerala, 18 in Delhi, 8 in Haryana, 7 in Tamil Nadu, 6 in Puducherry, 5 each in Goa and Uttarakhand, 3 in Uttar Pradesh, 2 each in Orissa and Punjab and 1 each in Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

As many as 127 fresh cases of the flu were reported from different parts of the country today, including 40 in Delhi, 24 in Rajasthan, 23 in Haryana, 12 in Karnataka, 9 each in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, 5 in Uttar Pradesh, 2 each in Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir and 1 in Gujarat.

With these, the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus reported in the country so far has gone up to 16,328, the statement added.

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Three fresh swine flu deaths were reported in the country Tuesday, all from the state of Rajasthan, taking the toll due to Influenza A (H1N1) to 558 in India, a union health ministry statement said.

"Report of three deaths has been communicated by the health department of Rajasthan," the ministry statement said.

With these deaths, the toll in Rajasthan has gone up to 37. In a late surge in influenza A (H1N1), the desert state has been witnessing both infections and deaths off late. Also with 35 fresh cases, the state has so far reported 877 infections.

According to the union health ministry, 142 fresh cases were reported across the country. While Rajasthan reported the highest number of cases, Delhi followed the list with 30 new infections and Maharashtra reported 19 fresh cases.

Though there are no fresh deaths in Maharashtra, the state has witnessed 220 deaths, highest among the states. While Karnataka has 120 deaths, Andhra Pradesh is number three in death tally with 50 of its citizens succumbing to swine flu.

Three more persons succumbed to swine flu on Saturday even as 139 fresh cases of the disease were reported across the country.

Two deaths were reported from Delhi while the third was reported from Kerala, taking the total toll to 569, a senior Health Ministry official said.
With 139 fresh cases, the total number of cases has now touched 17,868.

While Delhi reported the maximum number of 48 fresh cases, Maharashtra and Haryana followed with 19 and 17 cases respectively.

Till Friday, samples from 86,015 people have been tested for swine flu in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 20.6 per cent of them have been found positive.

2,604 new cases (total 17,729) and 54 new deaths (total 577) were reported in the two weeks from November 14th to November 27th. The majority of cases and fatalities continue to come from North Western India, predominantly Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Colder temperatures in Delhi have coincided with increased daily confirmed cases. In all, the number of confirmed cases per day has doubled over the last two weeks indicating that a second wave has begun. Rajasthan did not have a large first wave, but seems to be getting hit hard in the last month. Average age of fatalities increased.

Three more persons died due to swine flu even as 198 fresh cases were reported from across the country today.

While two deaths were reported from Rajasthan, the third one was reported from Maharashtra. With this, the total toll has touched 578, the Health Ministry said.

Out of the 198 fresh cases, Delhi reported the maximum number of 92 cases, Harayana and Maharashtra followed the national capital in the list with 30 and 13 cases respectively.

With this, the total number of cases has now touched 18,396. Out of the 198 cases reported during the day, two have a history of foreign travel but the rest are indigenous cases.

Till today, samples from 97,971 people have been tested for swine flu in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 20.9 per cent of them have been found positive.
