Jackson County announced Tuesday that H1N1 killed an 11-year-old Oak Grove boy in October.

Jordan Smith, a fifth grader at Maple Elementary, died from complications of the influenza A infection. His manner of death was natural, according to a Jackson County spokesman.

Smith died on Oct. 18 from an undisclosed illness. At the time, it was suspected that H1N1 played a part in his death but an official cause of death wasn?t known until the Jackson County Medical Examiner?s Office conducted an autopsy.

A classmate had told a Kansas City TV station that Jordan had a fever and had missed several days of school.

Unlike seasonal flu, the new virus has disproportionately afflicted young people, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Just less than half of Missouri?s flu cases have occurred in children age 5 to 14 that contributed to 61 school closings so far this year. Nearly 77 percent of Missouri?s flu cases have been among people 24 years old or younger.

The department is encouraging local health departments to begin offering the vaccine to anyone who requests it. Shipments of the vaccine arrived to the department on Tuesday.

The new policy will make the vaccine available for the first time to seniors and other healthy adults. Until now, limited supplies of the vaccine forced health departments to restrict the vaccine to groups that were hardest hit by the new flu strain, including infants, children and pregnant women.

SAN DIEGO -- A South Bay family mourning the loss of their 16-year-old daughter told 10News they were not made aware of their daughter's swine flu diagnosis.

Montgomery High School student Aby Aguiniga was identified as the first teen to die of swine flu after 10News matched a San Diego County news release against death records.

On Thursday, Montgomery High School helped 10News arrange an interview with Aby's father to thank classmates for helping with funeral costs.


However, as the interview unfolded it became apparent eight days after Aby's death, Ruben Aguiniga did not know the true cause of death.

While Aby did suffer flu-like symptoms, Aguiniga said he was told by doctors at Rady Children's Hospital that his daughter, who lived with Down syndrome, likely died of a heart condition.

"I can't believe it. This is terrible. We have several young children and grandchildren in our home. We need this information," said Aguiniga.

Orleans reports suspected H1N1 flu death

ALBION ? The Orleans County Health Department is reporting that it suspects a minor died this week from complications due to the H1N1 virus, the county?s first death connected to H1N1, said Public Health Director Paul Pettit.

He did not identify the person suspected with H1N1, citing privacy laws.

A 16-year-old from Holley, Tim Barbato, died Tuesday from pneumonia. He had contracted H1N1 and had been Strong Memorial Hospital?s pediatric intensive care unit for about three weeks, his family wrote on the Caring Bridge Web site.

CaringBridge.org helps keep family and friends informed when a loved one is fighting a serious illness. Family and friends receive updates on the patient and they can leave messages of support.

Tim, a senior at Holley High School, contracted H1N1 despite getting vaccinated, his family said on Caring Bridge.

Pettit said a sample has been sent to the Wadsworth Center, the state Department of Health?s laboratory in Albany. That test should reveal if H1N1 was a factor in the death.

Pettit urged county residents to consider getting the H1N1 vaccine. The county Public Health Department is offering the vaccine during a clinic today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Department on 14012 Route 31 West, next to the nursing home.

The vaccine is open to anyone in the county. About 1,500 Orleans County residents have already been vaccinated at five previous clinics.

Pettit also urged residents to wash their hands frequently and take other precautions to avoid contracting H1N1.

Henry County (Ohio) teen dies from H1N1 complications

The Henry County health department announces a resident has died of complications from the H1N1 virus. The 15-year-old male had been hospitalized in critical condition for several weeks before he died.

The health departments urges all county residents to get vaccinated. Clinics are held most days of the week and are by appointment only.

Residents should call 419-592-0037 for an appointment.

Midway ISD fourth-grader dies of complications from swine flu virus

A South Bosque Elementary School fourth-grader who had been suffering from complications related to the H1N1 virus died at a San Antonio hospital Monday, according to an obituary sent to the Tribune-Herald.

Nicholas Joe Bolin, who was 9, became sick about five weeks ago. He was treated for the virus, also known as swine flu, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children?s Hospital in San Antonio.

The obituary says that Nicholas enjoyed baseball, wrestling, water skiing and pingpong. He also liked reading, piano lessons, school activities and spending time with his older brother. He would have turned 10 on Dec. 30.

Julie Henry, a spokeswoman for Midway Independent School District, said students at South Bosque observed a moment of silence Tuesday in honor of Nicholas. The school also had counselors on hand to talk to students, she said.

Nicholas had not been at school for more than a month, Henry said. She called the boy?s death ?really, really sad.?

Calgary teen becomes Alberta's 65th H1N1 death (CANADA)

CALGARY - A Calgary youth who was otherwise healthy has died after contracting H1N1, bringing the total number of fatalities related to the new flu strain to 65 in the province, according to local health officials.

Kris Gorbous, who spoke out last month about the importance of getting the H1N1 vaccine, confirmed today that it was his 16-year-old son, Michael, who died. He had been in Foothills Hospital since the end of October in a medically induced coma as he battled H1N1.

Michael died Tuesday.

Both Kris Gorbous and the health region again encouraged Albertans to get vaccinated.

?It?s a sad situation and our condolences certainly go out to the family and friends of this individual,? Judy MacDonald, deputy medical officer of health in Calgary, said at a press conference today. ?It is a reminder though that influenza is with us. H1N1 activity is lower than it was earlier, but it is still happening.

?Your best defence against this infection is to get vaccinated,? she said, noting the boy had no underlying health conditions.

MacDonald said the health region will continue to operate vaccination clinics until Dec. 23 and encouraged all Calgarians to get their H1N1 shot.

A total of 1.1 million Albertas ? including 460,000 Calgarians ? have been vaccinated so far, she said.

There have been 64 deaths related to H1N1 across Alberta. The boy?s death brings that number to 65.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere...many of us have been praying for Lillian Chason at UNC hospital on an ECMO machine since Thanksgiving. Now please continue to hold her family in your prayers.

We want to say thanks again to the wonderful people at the UNC hospital who have been and remain incredibly supportive. And thank you all for all your prayers and kind thoughts- it was an incredible comfort during this long difficult journey."

ROCKFORD ? The Winnebago County Coroner?s Office has released the cause of death for a 7-year-old boy who died Nov. 6 as acute pneumonia with swine flu (H1N1) and sickle cell disease being a contributing factors.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health there have been five deaths in Winnebago county where the H1N1 virus has been a contributing factor.

A spokesperson at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center said a 14-year-old Mid- South girl has died from complications associated with the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.

Due to privacy reasons, the name of the student and her address were not released.

"I can confirm we did have a 14-year-old female who died from complications associated with the H1N1 virus," Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center spokesperson Jennilyn Utkov said Monday afternoon.

Relatives of the child expressed their wish to DeSoto County School District officials that they make no public comment on the child's death, DeSoto County Community Relations Coordinator Katherine Nelson said Monday from Jackson.

The school district was reluctant to confirm that the student was enrolled in the DeSoto County School system or that the student died as a direct result of contracting the H1N1 virus.

DeSoto County Superintendent of Education Milton Kuykendall said the school district has urged the public to take advantage of swine flu vaccinations when possible.

"DeSoto County Schools are working with the health departments," Kuykendall said.

7th H1N1-Related Death in Shelby County

According to the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department, a 12-year-old child has died as a result of the H1N1 influenza.

The child, who is a Memphis resident, died at a local hospital. Given this, public health officials are concerned regarding the spread of the virus in Shelby County and are asking residents to get vaccinated immediately.

Helen Morrow, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, announced that this is the seventh known influenza-associated death in Shelby County. This comes on the heels of another death announced yesterday of a DeSoto County teenager who died last week.

?At this particular difficult time, we want to convey our condolences to the family of this child,? Morrow said. ?This death is a somber reminder of the disproportionate impact that H1N1 has on young individuals.?

It is also a reminder that the pandemic is not behind us, added Yvonne Madlock, Director of the Health Department. Last month, the World Health Organization announced that the H1N1 flu pandemic may continue until 2011, which signals that the H1N1 virus has the potential to re-emerge this winter as a stronger strain. Therefore, the public needs to remain vigilant and get the vaccine.

?We have an ample supply of vaccine and we want everyone in our community to be protected. Since vaccine arrived at the Health Department in October, we have been encouraging our most vulnerable citizens and our entire population to receive the vaccine and that continues to be our message. Get vaccinated. It is the only sure way to protect yourself against this virus,? Madlock said.

Morrow agrees: ?Given that the H1N1 virus is the predominant flu strain circulating, we will continue to remind our citizens that vaccine can protect against this H1N1 flu. We will continue to beat this drum until everyone understands the importance of this.?

In particular, Madlock and Morrow emphasized that children under the age of 10 still require two doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine in order to be fully immunized against the virus.

?It is especially important that children younger than 10 years old who have only received one dose of vaccine thus far, receive a second dose,? Morrow added...

.A 12-year-old Memphis boy has died of complications from the H1N1 swine-flu virus, local health officials confirmed this morning.

The death was the second from swine flu reported in recent days at Le Bonheur Children?s Medical Center, the other being a 14-year-old DeSoto County girl. Since August, there have been five probable or confirmed H1N1 deaths at Le Bonheur and seven throughout Shelby County.

Citing federal privacy laws, hospital officials declined to release the latest victim?s name or any other details.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Within 72 hours after contracting H1N1 virus last fall, 7-year-old Trevor Ron Lin took his last breath. Months later, the intense pain of losing a loved one remains for his family. ?Believe me, you don?t want to ever walk in my shoes,? said Dr. Henry Lin, Trevor?s father. ?I am living every parent?s worst nightmare.?

Lin is an accomplished surgeon and a member of several professional medical associations. He said he was at his home in Albany, N.Y., back from a medical assignment in order to spend time with his wife and three children in time for Halloween and happy to go trick-or-treating with them. His eldest daughter, Ashley, age 11, came down with a cough and flu symptoms, but she recovered fairly quickly. Trevor?s symptoms seemed serious enough to warrant a trip to the hospital, but there was no Tamiflu available for Trevor. He didn?t exhibit any co-morbidities and he simply was not considered a high-risk patient by the hospital staff. He was released. None of Lin?s children had been vaccinated for H1N1.

The speed with which Trevor?s condition deteriorated after returning home was alarming. Even with his medical training, Lin could not abate the worsening symptoms -- a high fever, rapid heart rate at 120 beats a minute.

Lin shared the chronology of Trevor?s death with an audience gathered on Jan. 13 at The Family Room, a day-care center not far off Capitol Hill, to mark National Influenza Vaccination Week, Jan. 10-16. He was joined by Dr. Bruce Gellin, deputy assistant secretary for health and director, National Vaccine Program Office, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and representatives from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Present also was Luke Duvall, an outstanding high school athlete from Arkansas, who had almost lost his life to H1N1. Duvall, whose near-fatal experience was reported by "60 Minutes," said, ?I wouldn?t recommend taking my path to get on TV.?

Gellin, who spoke on behalf of DHHS Sec. Kathleen Sebelius, said, ?This has been a challenging year for us.? Though he said 60 million Americans had been safely vaccinated, he cited the 47 million U.S. H1N1 cases; over 200,000 hospitalizations, and approximately 10,000 deaths, ?the vast majority in children and adults under 65,? as enough statistical evidence to still be vigilant because the flu season has not yet run its course.

Rep. Judy Chu, (D-CA) recounted the death of constituent Monica Rodriguez, a mother of three who was five months pregnant. ?Vaccinations could have saved her life,? said Chu, ?and prevented this terrible tragedy.? Rodriguez had sought medical care from one hospital whose staff sent her home with cough syrup. When her health failed to improve over the next few days, Rodriguez went to a different hospital which admitted her, but it was too late to save her.

Chu said she co-sponsored a congressional resolution for National Influenza Vaccination Week in order to bring more visibility and awareness to the importance of following the CDC guidelines regarding H1N1. Had the first hospital identified Rodriguez as a part of a high-risk group, due to her pregnancy, it is likely she would have been treated appropriately and lived.

Karl Moeller, executive director of the Campaign for Public Health Foundation and Rep. James McGovern, MA, co-chair of the Congressional Study Group on Public Health shared opening remarks with attendees, among them a bevy of mothers and children who had trekked to the event from other parts of the city. ?None of them know they?re going to get a shot,? McGovern said with an almost deadpan chuckle.

Dalila Sorto, a patient at Mary?s Center for Maternal and Child Care, Inc., in the across-town Adams Morgan community, brought two of her sons. Joel will be 4 in April and Luis, 18-months-old, were vaccinated after the briefing.

Sorto had been waiting to get the vaccinations for them and herself since November. The vaccine wasn?t available at the time and her insurance had been cancelled. By the end of December, her insurance was renewed and Mary Center patients were invited to get their vaccinations free at The Family Room press conference. ?I wasn?t too concerned about the swine flu but it was important to get vaccinated,? said Sorto through a Spanish-language interpretor.

Sorto?s follow-through to get shots for her children is just the kind of personal initiative that Lin is championing. ?Otherwise healthy children continue to die from this serious virus,? said Lin, who spoke on behalf of Families Fighting Flu. Of his own anguish, he said, ?Almost every member of this organization has a similar story to tell.?

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A 3-year-old Otero County boy has died of complications from swine flu.

The state Department of Health says the child had chronic high-risk conditions that made him vulnerable from complications from the flu.

He died in mid-January. The last previous swine flu death in a New Mexico child occurred in mid-November.

However, the study said that the virus spreads slower than seasonal flu.

"We found that about nine percent of people who lived with a household member with (A/H1N1) flu also got flu," said leading researcher Oliver Morgan, an epidemic intelligence service officer at the center.

"We found that 18 percent of children under five, and 11 percent of children five to 18, got flu in the household," Morgan said, adding that children were more likely to introduce flu into the household.

The so-called attack rate of the A/H1N1 flu was four percent, which is lower than that seen with seasonal flu and lower than what would be expected for a pandemic flu, the researchers said.

Most of the flu and the highest attack rates were seen among children, reinforcing earlier findings that the A/H1N1 flu tends to target children and younger adults.

For the study, researchers at the center began looking at the A/H1N1 outbreak when it first started in the United States in April and May of 2009.

The researchers examined more than 3,400 flu samples from the San Antonio, Texas, one of the first sites to experience infections.

The researchers were able to identify 97 cases of the A/H1N1 flu in 77 households. In about 30 percent of the homes, additional family members became sick within four days of a child coming down with the flu.

This study proved earlier findings that the transmission rate of A/H1N1 strain may have been lower than anticipated.

Parents' warning after Christmas Day tragedy

A GRIEVING couple have urged other parents to vaccinate their children against deadly swine flu after discovering their little boy had died from the illness.

Distraught Sarah-Jane and Iain McCall found their 23-month-old toddler Andrew dead in his cot on Christmas morning.

Their plea is backed by health chiefs in Hampshire, who are warning parents not to ignore the threat of the killer virus - as swine flu jabs for under-fives are available for just two more weeks.

Sarah-Jane told how she had put her seemingly healthy toddler to bed on Christmas Eve.

But tragedy struck when the following morning the couple went to wake the little boy and found him face down.

Sarah-Jane said: "I went to touch him to wake him up but in that moment I knew my baby was dead and I was far, far too late because he was so cold.

"I picked him up in my arms but the coldness of his body ran through my entire body and left me numb."

The couple, from Lower Duncan Road, Park Gate, who were visiting Andrew's grandparents near Bristol, fought desperately to revive their only child but there was nothing they or paramedics could do to revive him.

"His death was a feeling of utter disbelief and shock that he had been so well and healthy the day before," said Sarah-Jane.

A post mortem revealed that Andrew, who had no underlying health issues, had died from swine flu.

Iain, a planning manager, said: "The only way you can protect your children from this is by getting the vaccination "We are determined to make a positive come from this."

Sarah-Jane added: "I don't want other people to lose their babies."

* THE Daily Echo today launches a campaign, called Do It For Andrew, to encourage Hampshire parents to get their children vaccinated against swine flu before March 31. .

All children aged between six months and five years are eligible for the jab.

Okla. Reports H1N1 Flu Death

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma leaders reported another death from the flu caused by the H1N1 virus.

State health officials said a young girl from Delaware County died late last month from the virus.

Her death brings the number of fatalities from H1N1 in Oklahoma to 42 since Sept. 1.

Medics meet to discuss swine flu death

TOP medics will meet this week to discuss why a 23-month-old toddler died from swine flu so suddenly in his sleep.

A panel of doctors will meet on Wednesday in Bristol in a bid to find out why Andrew McCall was found dead in his cot on Christmas morning.

His parents, Sarah-Jane and Iain McCall, of Lower Duncan Road, Park Gate, say their son was showing no symptoms when they put him to bed on Christmas Eve when they were staying with family in Portishead, near Bristol.

A post-mortem carried out at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London revealed Andrew died from swine flu with no underlying health issues.

The brave couple found the courage to speak to the Daily Echo to urge other parents in Hampshire to vaccinate their children against the killer virus.

It is a race against time as there are just 13 days for healthy children under five to get protected against swine flu. Health chiefs in Hampshire have urged for all parents to arrange for their children to get the jab before March 31 when the Government withdraws it.

Sarah-Jane, 35, said: ?The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the findings of the medics regarding Andrew?s death, including why he might have died so quickly and quietly but also if there are any lessons to be learnt from his death.

?Our precious baby was taken from us far too quickly and it is absolutely unbearable, but if telling his story can save just one other child?s life we will be happy.?

Dad Iain added: ?We are determined to make a positive come from this. The general portrayal is that swine flu has gone away and it?s not in the public consciousness any more but it is a killer virus and there is still a risk.?

Dr Iain Maclennan, of NHS Hampshire, said he was grateful to the family for encouraging vaccination so they can provide the best protection possible.

He urged parents to arrange for their child to receive the vaccination by the end of March.
