Swine Flu Deaths Rise By 7 In NM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Health officials said seven more people have died in New Mexico due to the swine flu.

Officials with the New Mexico Department of Health said Wednesday those who have died in the last week include four people from Bernalillo County - a 57-year-old man, a 62-year-old man, a 58-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman. All had chronic health conditions.

A 12-year-old boy from Dona Ana County and a 52-year-old man from Eddy County, both with chronic health conditions, also died. A 29-year-old woman from Dona Ana County who died had no chronic conditions.
Their deaths bring the statewide total to 36 deaths related to swine flu.

The Health Department has ordered 283,430 doses of nasal and injectable vaccine.

Wayne County, N.Y. ? The Wayne County Department of Health has confirmed that a 3-year-old child has died from the H1N1 virus.

According to health department Director Valerie Edell, the child had not been vaccinated against H1N1 and had not been hospitalized. The department, she said, received the confirmed H1N1 test results today. They are unaware of any pre-existing medical conditions the child may have had.
County lawmakers, too, learned of the death this week.

Huron Supervisor Laurie Crane, vice chairwoman of the county?s Health and Medical Services Committee, said supervisors were informed during their regular board meeting Tuesday.

?I do know that with the flu ? no matter what kind ? we have deaths from it every year,? she said. ?It?s just a tragedy.?

Crane said she had no further details about the child.

Edell would not release further information about the child or details about the child?s illness.

EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso County Health Department said two individuals have died from the H1N1 virus.

The victims are a 66-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both from east El Paso.

They are the county's 12th and 13th H1N1-related fatalities.

In Dona Ana County, there are also two more deaths related to the swine flu, a 29-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy.

The H1N1 virus has caused the death of an otherwise healthy baby girl, according to health officials.

The child was 4 months old and had no known underlying health conditions, according to the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency. County officials said the baby's cause of death was initially believed to be sudden infant death syndrome, but they later determined it was actually related to swine flu. The girl had flu-like symptoms, according to authorities, and her parents brought her to Children's Hospital, where she died on Nov. 12.

County public health officer Wilma Wooten discussed the baby's death at a news conference on Wednesday.

The boy’s parents, Joddie and Karen White, want the public to know how deadly the virus can be.

“I know you see on the news that it’s dangerous, but honestly I don’t think people realize how dangerous it is,” said Justin’s father, Joddie White. “We would like to get the word out to people about how bad this is. It’s terrible.”

Justin’s father said the boy had been suffering from kidney problems since July, and by late October his kidneys had shut down.

“It was a roller coaster ride. One day he’d look like he’d be doing good, the next day he’d be worse,” he said.

He underwent surgery Oct. 24 in preparation for dialysis, but while recovering from the surgery he contracted swine flu. Justin White spent two weeks on a ventilator before succumbing Sunday.

Justin White suffered from Cerebral Palsy all his life, never learning to walk or talk. Despite this, he was a third grader at Southside Elementary School in Pulaski.

His parents described him as a cheerful child who loved school, music, family and Chinese food.

“I don’t think he had a mean or a bad bone in him,” his father said. “Not only was he the heart and soul of our family, he was the heart and soul of a lot of people. He really touched a lot of lives in his nine years.”

H1N1 May Have Lead To SIDS In Death of Infant

SAN DIEGO ? Swine flu may have caused a 4-month-old girl to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, called SIDS, though her autopsy is not yet complete.

The infant was brought to San Diego's Rady Children's Hospital after she was found in bed not breathing. The girl later tested positive for the H1N1 virus. There are many questions about what causes SIDS, but Dr. John Bradley of Children's Hospital, said colds and influenza are seen as contributing factors.

"And now we have preliminary evidence that H1N1 may be the preceding viral infection that will cause SIDS in an infant that is predisposed to develop this condition," he said.

The infant died last week. Doctors must complete a full examination of the girl before they can be sure she died of SIDS.

JETERSVILLE, VA. -- On Wednesday, Oct. 7, 6-year-old Heaven Skyler Wilson dragged herself off the school bus that dropped her in front of her home on a rural road in Jetersville, just south of Richmond. The little girl, who had never had so much as an ear infection in her life, was pale and feverish and complained of an upset stomach.

The next day, Heaven's grandmother, Pat Sparrow, took her to a nearby clinic. Heaven, usually a bright, bubbly girl with blond pigtails, dimples and effusive energy, had a sore throat and a 103-degree temperature. The doctor swabbed her for the flu, and the test was positive.

It was just something going around, Sparrow said she was told. The doctor told Sparrow to take Heaven home, give her Tylenol and chicken broth, and let her rest.

By the next morning, Heaven couldn't breathe. Sparrow called 911.

"How does she sound?" Sparrow said the dispatcher calmly asked.

Sparrow's panicked husband held the phone to the child's heaving lungs. "This is how she's breathing! Will you get here now?"

He scooped the child in his arms and rushed across the lawn to meet the ambulance. By the time they arrived at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond about 30 minutes later, Heaven's face was blue. Emergency room doctors intubated her and put her on a respirator.

Two weeks later, on Oct. 21, ravaged with double pneumonia and a staph infection that deprived her brain of oxygen, Heaven was disconnected from the respirator. She lived for four minutes.

At 11:18 p.m., Heaven died in the arms of her mother, Sara Wilson. "You never heard such an awful scream from someone who loved her child so much," Sparrow said, her voice shaking.

A young girl in Pima County has died of 2009 H1N1 influenza ? the 10th death from the novel flu strain this year, health officials confirmed today.
The girl was younger than a pre-teen and had other underlying health conditions, Pima County Health Department spokeswoman Patti Woodcock said. Woodcock would not release any other information about the girl, other than to say she died Nov. 1 and that the department was notified of her death on Thursday.
All 10 Pima County deaths have been in people younger than 65, and half of the deaths have been among people younger than 25. All but one had underlying health conditions, Woodcock said.
A total of 103 Arizonans have died of H1N1 this year and it has not proven any more lethal than seasonal flu. Typically, 700 people in the state die each year of regular, seasonal influenza.

Young child among latest H1N1 deaths in Mass.

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Boston, Mass.) - Two more Massachusetts residents have died of the swine flu. A child is on of the latest victims.

The child was under the age of four, and from Middlesex County. Officials would not say if it was a boy or a girl, and did not know if her or she had underlying medical conditions. The child died earlier this week.

Iowa H1N1 deaths rise to 24
REGISTER STAFF REPORT ? November 20, 2009

Iowa?s death toll from the H1N1 flu virus has risen to 24, the Iowa epartment of Public Health said today.

Three deaths were reported today. They include a child in eastern Iowa, and two adults in Marion and Warren counties. All three had risk factors that increased the chance of complications from the virus, health officials said.

Classmates mourn 12-year-old's death from H1N1 complications (video)

Classmates of a Patrick Henry Middle School student who died as a result of complications from the H1N1 flu virus spent the weekend honoring their friend.


Tyler Newville died Friday night after three days of illness and two days away from school. His parents took him to the hospital on Friday, where he died from complications of influenza and pneumonia.
“He was in really deep, deep shock,” Tyler's father Tim Newville said. “That was what killed him.”

Newville is the 20th South Dakotan to die as a result of the virus.

The Sioux Falls School District sent automated voice messages to parents of Patrick Henry students on Friday night telling them the school would be open through the weekend.

Newville's family issued the following statement about his death:

We would first like to thank the staff of Celebrate Community Church and all the members of the community for their prayers and support in this incredibly difficult time.

Tyler was happy, healthy active 12-year old who had no underlying health issues. He started running a low-grade fever Wednesday night. He stayed home from school Thursday with typical, mild flu-like symptoms. Friday morning his fever broke, but his breathing was becoming labored. He was taken to Sanford Clinic and from there, he was taken by ambulance to Sanford Children’s Hospital where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. At the children’s hospital, he was diagnosed with H1N1, pneumonia and severe shock. Because of the shock his body was not able to respond to treatment the way it should, and despite the huge effort of all the doctors and nurses, he passed away at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Tyler was an amazing kid with a tender heart and compassion beyond measure. He always greeted people with open arms and left them with a smile on their face.

We want to stress to everyone the importance of getting immunized and taking every precaution to prevent getting or spreading H1N1.

Grieving family want H1N1 test performed after Christiansburg High School student's death (Virginia)

Lexie Stump, 15, died Thursday of pneumonia. According to her grandmother, doctors said she had symptoms of swine flu.

The family of a Christiansburg High School student who died last week plan to have tests performed to determine if she had the H1N1 virus.

Funeral services for Lexie Elizabeth Stump, 15, were held Monday at New Hope Church of God in Christiansburg.

About 300 people attended, more than half of them teenagers, pastor Michael Bond said.

Bond said Stump was a lively girl who "loved life."

Stump died Thursday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She had been hospitalized for 25 days after contracting a high fever and deep cough, maternal grandmother Mary Hinkley said.

Stump lived in Radford with her father, James Stump. Before that, she had attended schools in Floyd County.

Although it's unknown if she had the flu virus, "her father said he wants to get the message across about the swine flu," Hinkley said.

Her grandmother said her bubbly granddaughter liked to dance and be with friends.

"Her friends was everything to her," she said. "Her little fingers never stopped texting to people."

Christiansburg High School Principal Rhonda Poindexter said that the school had no plans Monday for a memorial service.

Before she got sick, Stump was very healthy, Hinkley said.

"You couldn't have known a more healthy person than who she was," she said.

When her fever would not subside, she was admitted to the hospital, and doctors determined she had pneumonia in both lungs, Hinkley said.

Doctors didn't test for the flu virus because "she was too far gone with pneumonia," Hinkley said.

"Doctors were 95 percent sure she had it. All the symptoms were that."

Symptoms of the virus include high fever, dizziness and nausea.

The Virginia Department of Health reports that 29 deaths in the state have been linked to confirmed H1N1 patients.

Robert Parker, a spokesman for the health department's New River District, said Monday that no deaths from H1N1 have been reported in the district this year.

The health department records only cases determined by lab tests. In some cases, doctors will make diagnoses based solely on symptoms.

Official lab test results in some cases can take weeks to be returned.

Supplies of the H1N1 vaccine have been limited. Some students in some elementary schools in Montgomery County received the vaccine, but then supplies ran short, according to interim Superintendent Walt Shannon.

"I strongly believe, and I've been trying to urge all parents with teens, if they can get it [the H1N1 vaccine] to get it," Hinkley said.

The Oneida County Health Department announced this morning that it has confirmed two more H1N1 deaths in the county.

Daniel W. Gilmore, acting director of the health department, said in a written statement that one death was an adult with a serious underlying condition and that person's physician didn't attribute the death to influenza.The second death was a child, the statement read.

WELLINGTON ? Claudia Hernandez doesn't know her baby is dead.

Her family says the 22-year-old paralegal has been at Wellington Regional Medical Center, in a coma, since last Wednesday, when she was diagnosed with H1N1 flu.

That same day, a relative said today, doctors delivered Jayden Amaury Dinvil, a month premature.

He lasted five days, dying Sunday. The family plans to bury him Friday.
And now it is both mourning Jayden and sitting vigil on Claudia.

"It's been difficult," Jadelyne Baptiste said. "They gave her a 10 percent chance of living."

Baptiste's brother, Renald Dinvil, a car salesman, lives with Claudia in Boynton Beach.

Jayden was their first child, she said.

Claudia began having a fever on Sunday and sought medical help, but each time she was told she was just tired, Baptiste said.

Then, "her fingers and toes started going black. We knew that meant she wasn't getting any oxygen."

Baptiste did not say if doctors had declared the child a direct victim of H1N1 flu, but said the family was told he died because he was delivered too early.

"They (doctors) said the baby wasn't going to make it because it wasn't getting oxygen to its brain and had a hole in its lungs," Jadelyne Baptiste said.

Palm Beach County health department spokesman Tim O'Connor said Wellington has reported H1N1 cases in the last week or two, as has nearly every hospital in the county. He could not confirm any individual cases.

He said the agency has not been notified of any deaths similar to what Hernandez' family has described and the count, through this afternoon, for the country remains at 11.

O'Connor did say that when Aubrey Opdyke, diagnosed with H1N1 in July, lost her infant, Parker Christine, also at Wellington Regional, the death was attributed to premature delivery rather than directly to the H1N1 flu.

Wellington Regional CEO Kevin DiLallo said today he could not comment on any individual patient.

Comment: Should or shouldn't newborn babies who survived outside the womb for a few hours or days and died due to the hasty delivery of premature infants whose mothers are in comas with the H1N1 be counted too as deaths from this pandemic? I say absolutely yes. And may these moms in comas survive and be restored safe and sound again to their loved ones soon...such heroic efforts by all the good doctors and nurses and EMTs and staff right now.

A number of us discussed this very issue a few months ago and the consensus was that if the child was issued a birth certificate and, thus, a death certificate, then the death would be counted. We had another similar situation in Florida during the summer.

Clutching their surviving child, 18-month-old Makayla, Erica and Max Neves spoke about the death of their son, Joshua, 3.
Joshua Nevis fell ill in June with a fever. His mother said it came on suddenly.
"And I noticed that he looked pale. So, I went to check on him and he was unresponsive. I called 911. I did CPR while I waited for the paramedics to arrive and I couldn't tell if there was a pulse," Erica Neves said.
Paramedics treated Joshua Neves and took him to Kapiolani Medical Center. He died in the ICU from acute respiratory distress and pneumonia brought on by H1N1, his parents said.
"Our son was healthy. He was a strong healthy boy. For something like this to have devastated his body; it's very hard to comprehend," Erica Neves said.
"I go from playing with him on a Wednesday to opening up the obituary and seeing my son's face, and seeing a person who passed away at 75, a person who passed away at 101, a person who passed away at 85, and then a No. 3 next to my son's name. That's beyond comprehension," Max Neves said.
Max and Erica Neves urged people to cover their coughs, stay in when sick and to vaccinate their children.

Thanks for all postings on this thread. I spent several hours yesterday reading through messages, and especially looking at the pictures

Its heartbreaking to think about all those children and youngsters. In a genuine way this thread pay deep respect to the memories of those who are no longer among us

We are also reminded of how fragile life can be
