Hundreds to be evacuated from coronavirus-hit ship off Panama
Elida Moreno

PANAMA CITY (Reuters) - Hundreds of passengers on a cruise ship, where four people have died and over 130 others have influenza-like symptoms, including at least two with the coronavirus, will be transferred to a sister ship, Panamanian authorities said on Saturday.

“The ship which could not dock at any port in South America will remain in Panamanian waters 8 nautical miles from the coast, since it did not receive approval from Panamanian health authorities to cross the (Panama) Canal,” Panama’s maritime authority said.

It said 401 asymptomatic passengers will be transferred from cruise operator Holland America Line’s 238-meter (781-foot) MS Zaandam vessel to the Rotterdam, a sister ship.

There are 1,243 guests and 586 crew on board the Zaandam, as well as four doctors and four nurses, the cruise operator has said. ..

A cruise ship stuck off Panama's Pacific coast after four passengers died and more than 130 others developed influenza-like symptoms, including at least two with COVID-19, will be allowed to proceed through the Panama Canal, the government said Saturday.

The 238-metre vessel can now continue its trip to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but Panama's government underscored that no passengers or crew members would be allowed to set foot on Panamanian soil.

"Panama will guarantee bio-security measures to protect the personnel who will participate in this manoeuvre and thus safeguard the health of Panamanians," the government said in a statement.

The Canadian government said 247 passengers and one crew member onboard are citizens, and that none of the dead are Canadian.

Ottawa also said it is working with its counterparts in Panama and the cruise line to repatriate the Canadians.

The Zaandam, which was previously on a South American cruise, was denied access to the Panama Canal for sanitary reasons, leaving passengers and crew wondering when they would get home.
In the meantime, Holland America, which is owned by Carnival Corp., sent the Rotterdam sister ship to the area as Panama's Maritime Authority said 401 asymptomatic passengers would be allowed to transfer from the Zaandam to the other ship.

There are 1,243 guests and 586 crew aboard the Zaandam, as well as four doctors and four nurses, the cruise operator has said.

Throughout the day, passengers on the Zaandam have been boarding onto tenders pulled up on the port side of the ship for transfer to the Rotterdam, a passenger told Reuters.
'We are in a petri dish of sickness'

CBC News spoke with several distraught Canadian passengers on board by a combination of phone, email and WhatsApp on Friday, as phone service from the ship was intermittent.

Passengers are currently confined to their cabins and have been given face masks as a safety precaution.

"It really drives home how lethal this disease is," said passenger David Kirkham of Victoria.
  • Chris and Anna Joiner of Orleans, Ont., are also aboard the ship.
"We are slowly losing hope that we will ever dock and get off this ship," said Chris Joiner. "We need the Canadian government to step up to the plate and help us."

He said passengers continue to report to the ship's medical centre with symptoms.Passengers Chris and Anna Joiner sent a message to the Canadian government asking for help while stuck on board a cruise ship that has had four deaths. (Submitted by Chris Joiner)
"What's really hard on us now is the stress that we're under," he said. "We don't know what's going to happen next."

Passengers on cruise ship in Panama transferred to new vessel
By Patty Winsa
Sat., March 28, 2020
Two Canadians are among the first passengers transferred from Holland America’s Zaandam cruise ship, where four people have died of COVID-19 and more than a hundred others have flu-like symptoms, to a sister ship called Rotterdam off the coast of Panama.

The cruise line began separating healthy passengers on Friday from those on the Zaandam using tenders, small boats that travel with the ship and are accessible from an opening in the cruise ship just above the water line.

Passengers were given a quick health screening before being allowed to leave, said Greg Weston, who is travelling with his 75-year-old father Fenton Weston, and was on the first boat load of 64 passengers.

“I think overall there has been a sense of relief among the passengers to be on the Rotterdam, mixed with sadness for the people that passed away, and sympathy for the sick people still aboard the Zaandam,” said Greg Weston in an email.

The transferring of passengers is expected to continue all day Saturday and Sunday, he said...:tiphat:

Holland America cruise ship heading toward US waters with nearly 200 sick onboard

By Michael Bartiromo | Fox News
  • Nearly 200 passengers and crew aboard the Zaandam cruise ship are reporting “influenza-like illness symptoms” as the ship makes its way toward Florida, Holland America Line confirmed late on Sunday.
The cruise line made the announcement only a day after the Zaandam and another Holland America ship were granted passage through the Panama Canal, and two days after four “older” passengers passed away aboard the Zaandam. Holland America did not say what the guests died of, although they did report at least two of the ill guests tested positive for COVID-19.

In total, Holland America said 189 guests and crew (73 passengers and 116 employees, respectively) were feeling ill as of Sunday night. Two days prior, that number was 138.

Holland America had previously deployed another of its ships, the Rotterdam, to rendezvous with the Zaandam to provide medical supplies and relief for the Zaandam crew. Earlier on Sunday, the Zaandam also transferred healthy guests to the Rotterdam to “balance the workload between the two ships,” and now both are traveling together toward Florida.

Passengers aboard both ships are now isolated in their cabins until disembarkation, Holland America says.

It is currently unclear whether the Zaandam and Rotterdam will be able to dock or disembark in Florida.

On Monday morning, Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine had said the ships already completed passage through the Panama Canal, but claimed the U.S. Coast Guard had not yet granted permission for the ships “to enter U.S. waters until a plan is submitted and approved,” according to a tweet from Udine. But whether it reaches Florida, remains to be seen. Gov. DeSantis told Fox News, “We cannot afford to have people who are not even Floridians dumped into South Florida using up those valuable resources," said DeSantis, according to the Sun-Sentinel. “We view this as a big, big problem and we don’t want to see people dumped in southern Florida right now.”

A cruise ship carrying ill passengers with symptoms similar to the COVID-19 virus is continuing toward South Florida. But Gov. Ron DeSantis says he does not want those passengers to leave the ship.

DeSantis said Monday he wants the passengers treated on the ship should it eventually dock at Port Everglades.

“We think it’s a mistake to be putting people into Southern Florida right now given what we’re dealing with,” DeSantis said.

“We would like to have medical personnel simply dispatched to that ship — and the cruise lines can hopefully arrange for that — [and] tend to folks who may need medical attention. But I think a lot of these are foreign nationals. And we want to make sure we have the beds available for the folks here in Southern Florida.”

How Many Cruise Ships Are Still Stuck at Sea? Sick Passengers, Closed Ports Leave Boats in Limbo

Monday was the deadline given by the Department of Homeland security for ships to return home, but several have note yet been able to do so

By Mackenzie Schmidt
March 30, 2020 07:25 PM

More than two weeks ago, cruise companies came together to announce that they would suspend sailings for thirty days and all their ships currently on voyages would return home amid the growing coronavirus pandemic.

But numerous boats full of passengers are currently still stranded at sea — here’s why.

On March 13, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) — a trade organization that represents Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, Princess, Holland America and many more— shared that in observance of government health recommendations and increasing travel restrictions, its members would voluntarily stop new cruises from departing at midnight on March 14, and all ships already at sea would make their way home.

At the time, 40 cruise ships carrying 90,000 passengers were in the middle of their planned itineraries around the world, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The DHS released a timeline for their safe return: 11 of the ships were to complete their sailings and get back to port by March 16. The remaining 29 were to do so by March 30.

However, CLIA confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday (the deadline by which the boats were meant to have returned), that 3.6% of its members’ 277 vessels had not yet made it back, meaning approximately 10 ships with passengers on board are still at sea. Another five are docked but cannot yet disembark....:tiphat:https://people.com/travel/how-many-c...oats-in-limbo/

Coronavirus Cases Surpass 600; County Cracks Down On Cruise Ships

There were 84 new COVID-19 cases reported Monday, bringing San Diego County's total to 603.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — County officials are cracking down on cruise ships as the number of coronavirus cases continue to climb in the San Diego region.

The county announced two new public heath orders Monday focused on cruise ships. One order gives the county public health officer discretion on disembarkations if a crew member or passenger on the ship has tested positive for COVID-19, while the other order bans all cruise ships from disembarking in San Diego after Tuesday.

Cruise ships will only be able to dock in San Diego Harbor for supplies. No crew member or passenger will be able to disembark until the public health emergency has ended, outside of limited, emergency situations.

Since the county declared a public health emergency, five cruise ships have docked and disembarked some or all of their passengers in the city. The most recent, the Celebrity Eclipse, docked Monday in the harbor, where 2,300 passengers will disembark through Tuesday. No case of COVID-19 has been detected on the ship.

Dr. Eric McDonald, the county's medical director of epidemiology, said health officials are in continuous contact with the ship's crew for any sign of symptoms.

SAN DIEGO, CA — A passenger aboard the Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship docked in San Diego Harbor has tested positive for novel coronavirus, county health officials confirmed Tuesday.

A letter sent Tuesday to all the passengers by Celebrity Cruises instructed them to self-quarantine for 14 days.

"Celebrity Cruises has recently been advised that a person who sailed on Celebrity Eclipse from March 1st through 30th has recently tested positive for COVID-19. Because you were a passenger on the same voyage, it is possible you were exposed to someone who was sick with COVID-19," the letter reads.

Passengers were advised to take their temperature twice daily and monitor for symptoms such as fever, coughing and shortness of breath.

After the ship docked, the individual was taken to a hospital with medical issues that were not believed to be related to COVID-19, including possible pneumonia and heart issues, the Union-Tribune reported. MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexican naval personnel said Tuesday they have evacuated a suspected coronavirus patient with "acute respiratory infection" from the British cruise ship Marella Explorer 2.

The ship operated by Marella Cruises, part of British company TUI Travel, was anchored 1.5 nautical miles (3 kilometers) off the Yucatan state port of Puerto Progreso.

Coronavirus cruise ship Artania refuses to leave WA port of Fremantle in letter to Australian Border Force

By Jacob Kagi

The Artania is already responsible for 41 coronavirus cases being treated in WA hospitals.
A renewed standoff is brewing over a cruise ship docked in the port of Fremantle that is responsible for dozens of coronavirus cases in WA hospitals, with the vessel's operators fighting back against demands it leave Australian waters.

The Artania has been directed by the Australian Border Force (ABF) to depart Fremantle, but its crew has responded by saying they want to remain for another two weeks.

The ship still has 450 crew and about a dozen passengers on board, with the rest flown home on charter flights to Germany over the weekend.

None of the passengers or crew from the vessel are Australian.
A total of 41 passengers and crew from the Artania are already being treated in West Australian hospitals for COVID-19, with several in life-threatening situations.

Health authorities are concerned there could be scores of further infections from the passengers and crew left on the ship, a situation that could put increased strain on the WA hospital system.

It is understood the Artania's crew has written to the ABF asking to remain in Fremantle until April 14 and also requesting a thorough cleaning of the ship

WA Premier Mark McGowan was yesterday adamant that the vessel needed to leave....:tiphat:https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-...-port/12110206
