[h=1]Coronavirus Latest: Ocean City, Maryland Couple On Cruise Ship Not Being Allowed To Enter Ports[/h] By Mike HellgrenMarch 14, 2020 at 9:11 pm

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Two Marylanders are aboard a cruise ship that isn’t being allowed to enter a number of ports in the South Pacific amid fears of the coronavirus, their daughter told WJZ.

Jolene Atkins said her parents, Dottie and Ed Pinto, who are from Ocean City, Maryland, are stuck on a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship that has been turned away from multiple ports.
The 21-day cruise aboard the Norwegian Jewel had been set to visit Australia, New Zealand and French Polynesia before ending March 20 in Tahiti, the Pintos told their daughter.

“What is supposed to happen next? We really don’t know,” Atkins told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren Saturday afternoon.

Atkins provided WJZ with text messages from her parents detailing their ordeal. “Many nerves are frayed....:tiphat:https://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2020/03/14/coronavirus-latest-ocean-city-maryland-norwegian-jewel/

(CNN) — At least four cruise ships have been stranded in different parts of the world as coronavirus cases spread.
Three cruise ships confirmed cases of coronavirus onboard: the MS Braemar, Silver Shadow and Silver Explorer.
As cases of the virus spread, some cruises have been denied port, leaving them to anchor off the coast of a country. Other cruises have docked with quarantined passengers onboard.
Here is the status of the cruise ships in limbo that we know of. [h=3]MS Braemar[/h]
Status: Stranded in the Bahamas
A cruise ship with at least five confirmed coronavirus cases is frantically searching for a place to dock after it was refused several ports of entry in the Caribbean.
Four passengers and one crew member aboard the MS Braemar tested positive for the virus, according to a statement from British company Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, which owns the Braemar.

Coronavirus-hit cruise ship in diplomatic scramble to find somewhere to dock
Twenty passengers and another 20 crew members, including a doctor, are now in isolation after displaying influenza-like symptoms while traveling on the ship, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said on Sunday.
The Braemar is anchored about 25 miles offshore in the Bahamas. It's waiting for clearance from the local government to bring aboard food, fuel and medications, as well as two doctors and two nurses who will help the onboard medical team.
The United Kingdom is in discussions with authorities in Cuba and the US to find a suitable port for the Braemar, according to British government sources familiar with the efforts. Cuba is looking like the more likely option. [h=3]Silver Shadow[/h]
Status: Docked in Brazil, passengers in isolation
A Canadian passenger tested positive for coronavirus Saturday on the Silver Shadow, which is docked off the Port of Recife in Brazil, according to Brazil's state news agency Agencia Brasil.
Royal Caribbean confirmed the case on the Silver Shadow on Sunday.

"Two guests aboard the Silver Shadow have been medically disembarked in Recife, Brazil, and one has tested positive for COVID-19," Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

The ship's 609 passengers have been in isolation since Thursday when a passenger showed symptoms similar to coronavirus, Agencia Brasil said on Friday.
One of the passengers who disembarked, a 78-year-old man from Canada, had a fever, cough and difficulty breathing. He was sent to a private hospital in the city. [h=3]Silver Explorer[/h]
Status: Docked in Chile, one passenger tested positive
The Silver Explorer docked in Castro, Chile, on Saturday after a passenger tested positive for coronavirus, Chile's Health Minister Jaime Manalich said during a press conference in Santiago Saturday.
An 83-year-old British man is in "good condition" and being treated at the Coyhaique hospital after testing positive, Manalich said. Royal Caribbean, which owns the Silver Explorer, confirmed the coronavirus case on Sunday.
"One guest aboard the Silver Explorer has been medically disembarked in Castro, Chile, also testing positive for the virus," the statement said.
The cruise ship is carrying 111 passengers and 120 crew members, according to Chilean officials. [h=3]Golden Princess[/h]
Status: Anchored off New Zealand, three passengers in quarantine
While no one has tested positive for coronavirus on the Golden Princess anchored off New Zealand, at least three passengers have been quarantined by the ship's doctor, according to local health officials.
One passenger developed symptoms similar to coronavirus and is being treated as a suspected case, according to the Canterbury District Health Board. Two other passengers had contact with a confirmed case in the past two weeks.
The ship is anchored in Akaroa Harbour near Christchurch while it awaits "precautionary health testing" of guests who traveled on an international flight from Los Angeles, Princess Cruises said in a statement to CNN. The flight had a passenger who later tested positive for coronavirus in Australia. The cruise line said the airline passenger who tested positive has never been on board its ship.
Passengers have not been allowed to disembark the ship. The Golden Princess departed Melbourne on March 10 for a 13-day voyage, Princess Cruises said. [h=3]Cruises to disembark[/h]
The Celebrity Eclipse is anchored in San Antonio, Chile. Celebrity Cruises is working with government officials to provide a controlled disembarkation plan to make sure guests have a way to leave the country, a spokesperson said.
The Azamara Pursuit, which is off the coast of Chile, is working on a plan to disembark passengers and get them home safely, an Azamara spokeswoman told CNN. The ship left Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 8, carrying 675 passengers and 389 crew members, Chile's Health Minister Jaime Manalich said Saturday.

Thousands leave Miami cruise without screening despite earlier passenger testing positive for COVID-19: report
BY ZACK BUDRYK - 03/15/20 04:22 PM EDT

A cruise ship allowed thousands of passengers to disembark in Miami Sunday without undergoing screening just days after a passenger left the ship and later tested positive for coronavirus.

The passenger left the MSC Meraviglia in Miami March 8, with 103 passengers and crew remaining aboard for the next voyage. By the time the Health Agency of Canada informed MSC Cruises the ex-passenger had tested positive, the ship had sailed again with thousands of additional passengers, the Miami Herald reported.

The company said it isolated seven crew members who had been in close contact with the passenger in individual cabins upon receiving the results, but said that health officials authorized the ship to dock Sunday and follow normal disembarking procedures.

A total of 3,877 passengers disembarked, several of whom proceeded to Miami International Airport. In contrast, the California health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have kept thousands of passengers on the Grand Princess cruise ship before eventually allowing it to dock in Oakland, where it remains as officials work to repatriate crew and passengers.

“If we have it, it’s going to spread throughout the country,” a passenger on the Meraviglia told the newspaper from his home in South Carolina.

21 cruise ships around the world have been affected by the coronavirus so far, leaving passengers infected, dead, or stranded — see the full list

  • The cruise ship industry has now been disrupted by the spread of the novel coronavirus across several cruise ships, leaving multiple passengers infected or dead.
  • This includes the Diamond Princess that left one-fifth of its 3,711 passengers occupants infected, USA Today reported.
  • The US Department of State has advised against traveling by cruise ship, and Princess Cruises has already canceled many of its planned trips.
  • At least 21 cruise ships around the world have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic resulting in extended voyage due to rejected dockings and in some cases increased transmission of the disease.
The US Department of State has advised against attending cruise ship trips amid the global spread of coronavirus, which has already disrupted several cruise ships across the world with resulting COVID-19 deaths.

Several cruise ships have started reporting coronavirus-positive passengers aboard its ships following the initial devastation of the Diamond Princess Cruise trip that left eight passengers dead, prompting a shake-up across the cruise industry. And the paranoia has now spread past the confinements of the ships: even cruises that have had no reported cases of COVID-19 have been barred from docking in certain countries and ports.

Princess Cruises has been hit more than many other cruise lines. Its Diamond, Grand, Regal, Golden, Pacific, Caribbean, and Royal Princess cruises have all been affected in some way, whether it be coronavirus-related deaths caused by contaminated ships and passengers, or the cancellation of trips just before its departure date out of general COVID-19 fear....:tiphat: https://www.businessinsider.com/crui...navirus-2020-3

Passengers Fell Ill With Coronavirus. And the Ship Sailed On

Even as Covid-19 sickened passengers, the Costa Luminosa was slow to act to prevent infections, despite two previous serious outbreaks on its parent company’s ships.
By Frances Robles

A waiter in the crowded cruise ship passageway approached the isolated passenger with a tray of food, two glasses of juice, plastic gloves on his hands — and a white table napkin across his face.

The napkin, tied over his mouth like a bandanna on a bank robber in an old western, was presumably supposed to protect the crew member aboard the Costa Luminosa from the spread of the coronavirus, which had already sickened three passengers. This was on Sunday, March 15, the first day that the crew began wearing gloves and shields over their mouths....
...
Citing ship logs, the Miami Herald reported on Wednesday that at least 24 crew members and 50 passengers on the Costa Luminosa were classified as sick. On Thursday, Carnival said that only seven people, including two crew members, were showing symptoms, and that the logs included people who were close contacts of the sick.....:tiphat:https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/19/t...-luminosa.html

Italy has always been kind about taking in refugees. I don't think the passengers can be choosy right now if their own country won't send a rescue ship.

GENOA (Sputnik) – Around 1,000 people on board the Costa Luminosa cruise ship that arrived Saturday morning in Savona, a port city in the Liguria region of Italy, will be quarantined, while Italian and Swiss residents will be taken to their homes, Governor of Liguria Giovanni Toti said.

Eighty-four persons onboard Costa Luminosa have already shown symptoms of COVID-19 and were isolated. There are over 1,000 passengers and crew members from various countries on board the ship. Those, who will be quarantined, will be taken care of by the Italian national health system and civil protection without burdening the Ligurian regional health system.
"Our goal, in agreement with everyone involved in this emergency linked to the Costa Luminosa, is to have by tomorrow evening one thousand people on board quarantined, mostly crew members as well as 188 passengers from foreign countries who cannot reach their homes because of the suspension of flights. A taskforce of the national health system and civil protection will take care of these people without burdening the Ligurian health system in any way, as it is already under great pressure", Toti said late on Saturday, as quoted in a press release of the Liguria region.

On Saturday night, 110 Italians - residents of Liguria and other regions of central and northern Italy - will be transferred to their homes, according to the press release; 87 Swiss citizens and 2 Venezuelans residing in Switzerland will be taken to their homes as well.

Coronavirus: Cruise ship docks amid concern of passenger sickness

The cruise ship MSC Magnifica has docked in Fremantle, Western Australia in a short stop to refuel.
No passengers or crew have been allowed off the ship with West Australian police and Australian Border Force officers on alert to make sure no-one leaves the vessel.
Premier Mark McGowan says no one will be allowed ashore when the vessel docks to refuel following its arrival about at 5am today (WA time), amid fears at least 250 of more than 1700 passengers are suffering upper respiratory illness. But ship Operator MSC denies any crew or passengers on the ship, which departed Italy in January and is on its way to Dubai, have respiratory or flu-like illnesses.
"There is no evidence to suggest anyone onboard may be infected with COVID-19," the company said...:tiphat:https://www.9news.com.au/national/co...b-e35de61ec93a

The Holland America cruise ship has yet to secure docking plans for passengers
Sophia Harris ? CBC News ? Posted: Mar 23, 2020 1:20 PM ET | Last Updated: 6 hours ago

The Zaandam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, has 42 passengers and crew members on board with 'influenza-like' symptoms. (Holland America Line)

Thirteen passengers and 29 crew members have fallen ill with influenza-like symptoms on board a Holland America Line cruise ship currently off the coast of Chile. And Canadians on the ship — which has been searching for a place to dock since March 14 — are desperate to get home.

The ship is carrying 1,829 people: 586 crew and 1,243 passengers, 247 of which are Canadian.

Michael Kasprow, of Toronto, said his 82-year-old mother, Julie, is on the ship with a friend, also in her 80s. Neither are currently sick, he said, but he's worried that the illness some of the passengers are experiencing could be COVID-19.

"We've seen what it can do on a cruise ship, and I just feel like they're sitting ducks," Kasprow said.

Holland America has no kits on board to test for COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. The company says all ill individuals have been quarantined since Sunday and that the remaining passengers and non-essential crew have been asked to remain in their cabins as a precautionary measure.

"The safety and well-being of our guests and crew is one of our highest priorities," the company said in a written statement.

The ship, the Zaandam, departed for its South American cruise on March 7, just two days before the Canadian government issued an advisory to avoid all ship cruise ship travel — after two Princess cruise ships were hit with COVID-19 outbreaks.......:tiphat:https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/cru...506674?cmp=rss

Ruby Princess cruise passenger becomes Australia's eighth coronavirus death

A woman in her 70s has become the eighth person to die after contracting COVID-19 in Australia.

UPDATEDUPDATED 16 MINS AGO
BY MAANI TRUU

A passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship has become Australia's eighth coronavirus fatality after testing positive to the disease last week.

The woman, aged in her 70s, was one of the first passengers from the cruise ship to be diagnosed after it docked in Sydney on Thursday, New South Wales health authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

There have since been 107 confirmed COVID-19 cases in NSW from the ship and a further 26 interstate.

There have been extensive concerns raised over why passengers were allowed to disembark the ship at Sydney Harbour despite some showing symptoms of COVID-19.

But NSW authorities have repeatedly insisted that proper precautions were taken to monitor those on board after the ship became one of four given an exemption to land after the government introduced a country-wide 30-day ban on foreign cruises.

The Ruby Princess had 1,148 crew and 2,647 passengers on board when it travelled to New Zealand before returning to Sydney Harbour, but NSW chief medical officer Kerry Chant said the ship was deemed "low risk" because it only travelled between New Zealand and Australia.

All those aboard the ship were asked to self-isolate for 14 days once positive cases were confirmed as part of heightened measures to contain the virus....

A day after passengers left the ship four cases had been identified - that has now jumped to a total of 133 positive tests.
