Texas Influenza season 2017-18; 248 fatalities

Jim - I'm unsure about the Tarrant total. I've seen 21 and also 8. For example this report has the updated totals for Collin & Dallas, but still 8 for Tarrant http://keranews.org/post/dozens-north-texans-have-died-flu-heres-how-protect-yourself .In a report from a few days ago, one paragraph had 8 while another paragraph had 21 - It seemed that the reporter had confused Tarrant with Travis county. It's possible that confusion resulted from that mistake. The county website is unhelpful. I was wondering about a possible confusion between Tarrant and Travis County numbers. I'll try to check the County websites to see if I can sort it out.
 
As of 1/29/18, Travis County is reporting 24 flu-related deaths.

More than 3,000 flu cases reported locally



A man is his 80s became the eighth person in El Paso to die from flu-related complications as the number of flu cases continues to increase, health officials said.

There have been 3,379 flu cases reported in El Paso this year, compared with 396 cases in the same period a year ago, the city?s Department of Public Health said Thursday. The figures are as of the second week of January.

The eight flu-related deaths were all patients with underlying medical conditions, health officials said.

AUSTIN (KXAN) ? In the last month, Austin doctors saw a distribution shortage of the drug that eases flu symptoms. Now, health workers nationwide are running out of rapid flu tests.

This comes as the Austin-Travis County Health Authority released a new numbers of flu-related deaths in the area.

So far, 28 people have died in Travis County, said Dr. Phil Huang, the authority?s medical director. All of the victims are in their 30s and older. Of those, 19 were 80 years old and older, he said.

Weatherford elementary teacher dies from flu complications, district says (Parker County)

A Weatherford second-grade teacher died Sunday, apparently from complications from the flu.

Heather Holland taught at Bose Ikard Elementary School. Her cause of death has not been officially released, WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported. But Weatherford ISD said in a written statement that her death was due to complications from the flu. She was in her 30s.

WEATHERFORD - A Weatherford second-grade teacher who had contracted the flu died on Sunday, according to the school district and her family.

Heather Holland, 38, taught at Bose Ikard Elementary School. Her official cause of death has not been released, but school district officials understand that Holland passed away "due to complications from the flu," according to a statement from the Weatherford district.

Her husband, Frank, confirmed to WFAA on Monday afternoon that his wife became septic over the weekend after being rushed to the emergency room on Friday night. Dialysis treatment didn't work.

HAYS COUNTY - Hays County reported its first flu-related death Wednesday after 366 positive flu cases had been confirmed since Feb 1.

According to county officials, there have been a total of 2,109 positive flu cases in Hays County since Dec. 2017 -- 697 in Dec. 2017, 1,046 in Jan. 2018, and then the 366 since Feb. 1.

Fort Worth woman dies after contracting flu twice

A Fort Worth mom who was seemingly healthy died after getting the flu and secondary infections twice.

The family of 58-year old Angie Barwise says they took her illnesses seriously. They took her to a doctor and hospital for treatment, got Tamiflu and antibiotics, but she just became weaker and weaker.

The Travis County flu death toll has risen to 34, according to county officials.

Two more people in Travis County have died from the flu, bringing the total number of county deaths so far this season to 34, health officials said.

This year?s flu season has been particularly deadly, with the most deaths reported in Travis County in more than 10 years, Austin Public Health spokeswoman Carole Barasch said. So far this season, no children have died from the flu, and the majority of deaths have been people 80 and older, she said.
