West Nile virus cases continue to mount in Denton County

West Nile Virus cases just keep coming, county officials stated at a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Denton County Health Department Director Bing Burton saidthere are six new cases today alone for the virus bringing the total to 118, what he believed to be the highest incident rate in the state...

West Nile death reported in Wharton County

WHARTON COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- We've learned of another death from the West Nile Virus, this time in Wharton County.

The Wharton County Office of Emergency Management confirms a person who was infected has passed away. The victim is a man in his late 70s from the El Campo area.

Andy Kirkland with WCOEM says the man had underlying health conditions and was taken to an El Campo hospital on August 9. He was ultimately taken to a Houston hospital where he died...

Second Denton County resident dies from West Nile virus

CARROLLTON ? A second Denton County resident has died from complications involving the West Nile virus, officials say.

The victim lived in Carrollton, was in her 80s, and had underlying health conditions. Denton County Health Department spokesman Bob Martinez said patient confidentiality laws prohibit him from releasing more information about the victim...

DSHS has confirmed 723 human cases of West Nile illness in Texas this year, including 30 deaths.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus. There are two forms of the illness, West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) and West Nile fever (WN fever). The symptoms of severe infection from West Nile neuroinvasive disease include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis. West Nile fever is the milder form of the illness. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and occasionally a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph glands.

DSHS reminds Texans to reduce the risk of exposure by eliminating standing water and other mosquito breeding areas; making sure door, porch and window screens are in good condition; and using a repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 when outdoors.

Andrews County resident dies from West Nile

An Andrews County resident has died after contracting West Nile virus, according to state health officials.

Texas Department of State Health Services on Friday listed nine Andrews County residents who tested positive for West Nile neuroinvasive and one case of West Nile fever. One of the nine resulted in death, officials said.

This is the most number of cases ever reported in Andrews County, according to TDSHS...

More West Nile Cases Confirmed In Central Texas

(August 27, 2012)?The total number of human cases of the West Nile virus in Central Texas rose to 47 Monday after McLennan County health officials confirmed three additional cases, increasing the total in the county to 32, including one death...

...Bell County health officials are reporting 10 cases with one death.

Five of those infected with the virus in Bell County were in the hospital late last week, including a 2-year-old girl who was transferred from Seaton Hospital in Killeen to Dell Children?s Medical Center in Austin.

The other four patients are older than 50, health officials said.

All five have symptoms of the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease...

Second West Nile death reported

A 78-year-old woman has died of West Nile virus, San Antonio's second fatality this month, health officials said Tuesday.

The unidentified woman was diagnosed Aug. 16 and died Aug. 22 in a Baptist Health System hospital.

That brings to eight the number of confirmed local cases ? two of which have been fatal. Seven of the eight cases were neuroinvasive illness, the most serious kind...

2 more Texas West Nile fever deaths reported

DALLAS -

Two more deaths have brought the Texas West Nile fever death toll to at least 33 this year.

Montague (mahn-TAYG') County officials reported this week that a 75-year-old Bowie man died Aug. 12. Meanwhile, health officials say a Nueces (noo-AY'-sehs) County woman described as between 45 and 60 years old died Monday of West Nile fever.

Both were said to have had underlying medical conditions...

Family members of Edward Najera, 77, said doctors told them he died from the human West Nile virus on Tuesday.

Nejera was one of four new cases of the West Nile virus confirmed by the El Paso County Health Department. There are a total of seven confirmed cases in the county so far...

A Midland County resident died Wednesday after being admitted to Midland Memorial Hospital with West Nile virus, officials confirmed.

Marcy Madrid, director of marketing and media relations for the hospital, said a Midland County adult died Wednesday after contracting West Nile virus. The patient, whose gender, age and name cannot be released because of privacy laws, was the second patient to be admitted to the hospital with the disease...
