[h=1]Swine flu in infants baffles doctors, moms to be checked[/h]
HYDERABAD: The spurt in H1N1 cases in children in the city coupled with increase in swine flu-like symptoms has forced authorities to find out the reasons. Now they plan to test the mothers of affected children for asymptomatic swine flu. As many as 12 children between five months and three years are undergoing treatment in the swine flu ward in Gandhi hospital.

Dr Sravan Kumar, superintendent Gandhi hospital, said cases of swine flu in children in state is rare and a matter of concern. [h=1]Michigan strain here: Lab confirms H1N1 mutation[/h]
HYDERABAD: The newer Michigan strain of swine flu (H1N1) which is circulating globally has made its way to Telangana, confirmed the National Institute of Virology, Pune.

For the past few years, it was the California strain that was wreaking havoc in the state, but the number of H1N1 positive cases dropped drastically last year from 3,193 in 2015 to 173 in 2016, hinting at weakening of the strain.

However, after registering an `unusually high' number of cases during summer, the health authorities had previously suspected a mutation of the deadly H1N1 virus. A batch of samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune in April to find out if the virus had indeed mutated.
