TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A poultry farm in Pingtung County was culled on Thursday (March 16) after it was confirmed that birds in the flock had been infected with the H5N1 variant of avian influenza the previous day.

The farmer reported several abnormal deaths of hens to local authorities on March 13, and two days later, on March 15, the presence of bird flu was confirmed. In response, the Animal Disease Control Center of Pingtung County was forced to cull 13,328 birds at the farm.

The county's Animal and Plant Disease Control Station completed the cleaning and disinfection of the farm area and surrounding environment on the 5th, and culled a total of 20,117 chickens. H5N1 Avian Influenza Outbreak at Qiding Goose Farm in Zhunan

An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza recently broke out in a goose farm in Qiding area, Zhunan Town, Miaoli County. After receiving the notification from goose farmers, the county animal control office reported it to the Animal Inspection Office of the Ministry of Agriculture. On the 7th, officials from the Animal Inspection Office met with Miaoli The county animal control station personnel went to the goose farm to investigate, clean up and cull the goose farm. The county government stated that this was the first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza since 2015. Currently, 200 geese have died in the goose farm. Zheng Wanxin, secretary of the Animal Epidemic Prevention Office of the Miaoli County Government, said that the business operator took the initiative to report on December 4 that 30 geese were found dead that day. The Animal Control Office emphasizes that if any abnormal death of poultry is found on the premises, the Animal Control Office can be notified immediately for disposal.
