Taiwan adds 3 imported coronavirus cases from US, France

Country's total reaches 385, including 6 deaths and 99 patients released

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan confirmed three new Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) cases Saturday (April 11), bringing the total for the country up to 385, including six deaths and 99 patients who have returned home after treatment.

All three of the new cases were imported, with not a single local transmission, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced at its daily news conference. The patients are two elderly men and one young woman.

Case No. 383 is a man in his 60s who was working in the United States long-term. His infection was discovered through testing at the airport once he arrived in Taiwan, but he had begun feeling unwell on March 31 and sought medical care in the U.S.

Patient No. 384 is a man in his 70s who had been living in the U.S. who developed a cough on April 4, the CECC said. Both men arrived in Taiwan on April 10.

A woman in her 20s who had been studying in France is No. 385. She entered Taiwan on April 3 and showed coronavirus symptoms the following day while undergoing home isolation. After she developed a fever on April 7, she tested positive for the virus.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Sunday (April 12) announced three more cases of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the country's total to 388.

During his daily press conference Sunday afternoon, Health Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced that two men and one woman had been confirmed with COVID-19. Of the three, two are imported cases, while one is a local infection.

Chen said that the single domestic case (No. 386) is a man in his 20s who lives with an imported case (No. 195) and had been placed under home quarantine after the latter was diagnosed with the disease. He said the authorities are still determining who has recently come into contact with the individual.

Patient No. 387 is a man in his 40s who had traveled to the U.S. on Feb. 20 for business, the CECC said. He developed a cough and sore throat on March 25 while still overseas, but he did inform the medical staff at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport of his symptoms upon returning to Taiwan on April 10.

Patient No. 388 is the spouse of No. 358, and she had traveled to the U.K. with her husband to visit their relatives on January 13. After returning to Taiwan on April 2, she noticed that she had lost her ability to smell or taste and decided to seek help from the CECC on April 3.

As of Sunday, Taiwan has recorded 388 COVID-19 cases, including six deaths.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Around 5.7 percent of the confirmed coronavirus cases in Taiwan are asymptomatic, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Monday (April 13).

National Taiwan University Vice President Chang Shan-chwen (張上淳), who currently serves as the convener of the CECC’s advisory specialist panel, provided insight into the symptoms and demographics of the country’s coronavirus cases as of Sunday, when they stood at 388. Five more cases were added on Monday, bringing the total to 393.

Male and female patients account for 47.2 percent and 52.8 percent, respectively. They range in age between 4 and 88, with the median age being 32.5, reported Liberty Times.

Most of the cases, or 71 percent, have mild symptoms without complications. 81 cases have developed mild pneumonia, while 29 cases have seen their conditions deteriorated to result in severe pneumonia and respiratory failure, accounting for 7.5 percent. The 29 cases include 12 requiring respirators in intensive care units and six who have died.

Around 22 patients, or 5.7 percent, have been asymptomatic, at least in the beginning. These cases have been identified through compulsory testing due to their close contact with family members who tested positive, said Chang.

The infectious disease expert noted that the CECC is working to paint a clearer picture of the novel virus' detrimental effects on the human body. While the WHO has suggested that cigarette smokers are more vulnerable, Chang said he would not jump to such a conclusion yet, given the relatively few cases among smokers in Taiwan, but added that some longtime smokers have experienced worse symptoms.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Monday (April 13) confirmed five new cases of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total to 393.

During his daily press conference on Monday afternoon, Health Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) confirmed five new cases of coronavirus, all of which were imported from abroad. The latest cases include three women and two men between the ages of 50 and 60. All but one were passengers aboard the ill-fated Coral Princess cruise ship, while the fifth is a relative of case No. 384.

According to the CECC, cases 389 through 392 are part of a cluster infection along with three relatives and a friend. The seven on Feb. 15 began a trip that took them to the U.S., Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and Chile, where they boarded the Coral Princess on March 5.

The cruise ship was originally scheduled to end its journey in Argentina on March 19, but due to the border closure there and in other countries as fear of the disease grew, the ship was forced to remain at sea for many days. While still at sea, 12 passengers and 10 crew members were confirmed with the disease, and three died.

The CECC pointed out that a total of 1,898 people was originally aboard the ship, including 1,020 passengers and 878 crew members. On April 7, the CECC received notice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that were seven Taiwanese nationals onboard.

Taiwan reports 2 new coronavirus cases, both imported from US

One of new coronavirus cases is 12th passenger infected from New York to Taipei flight

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Wednesday (April 15) announced two new cases of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total to 395.

During his daily press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Health Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced there were two new coronavirus cases detected in the country that day. Both of the new cases were imported from the U.S., one of whom was aboard the doomed China Airlines flight from New York to Taiwan which has already reported a number of infections.

Case No. 394, a woman in her 60s, was aboard the ill-fated China Airlines (CAL) flight CI011, which arrived in Taiwan from New York on March 30. The CECC carried out testing on all passengers and crew from the jet from April 11 to 15, and case No. 394 is the latest to be diagnosed, bringing the total to 12.

The CECC said that the woman had originally flown to the U.S. on Jan. 22 to visit relatives before boarding flight CI011. Since 11 other passengers on the plane tested positive, the woman's home quarantine was changed to home isolation.

On April 6 and 7 the woman developed symptoms including body ache, stomachache, vomiting, chest pains, and fever. She was examined by medical professionals on both April 8 and 10, before officially being diagnosed on April 15.

Case No. 395 flew to the U.S. on Jan. 23 to attend school. However, on April 4, she began suffering symptoms such as coughing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and the loss of the sense of smell.

When she arrived in Taiwan on April 13, she voluntarily declared her symptoms. She was tested for coronavirus by quarantine personnel in the airport and the results came back positive on April 15.

Since the outbreak began, Taiwan has reported a total of 395 COVID-19 cases, 340 of which were imported, while 55 were local. Six persons have died from the disease and 137 have been released from hospital isolation.
