Uncertain origin of Taiwan's 24th COVID-19 case perplexes experts

Taipei, Feb. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese medical authorities are increasingly perplexed by the country's 24th novel coronavirus (COVID-19) case -- a woman in her 60s from northern Taiwan, with no recent history of travel abroad and an unknown source of infection.

The woman's case, which was announced Wednesday by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), may stretch back to the early days of an outbreak that has since spread across the globe, sickening over 75,000 people and killing more than 2,200.

According to a timeline provided by the CECC, on Jan. 6 the woman came in contact with her daughter's classmate, who had recently returned from Hangzhou, China...

A man in his 80s from northern Taiwan and his 50-year-old son were identified as, respectively, the 27th and 28th cases of the viral infection, said CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. The source of infection is still under investigation, as the father and son have not traveled overseas recently, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

However, the CECC said another son of the man in his 80s frequently visited China, including Wuhan City, but he returned to Taiwan on Dec. 2, from the Chinese city of Guangzhou. The younger son of the 27th case met with friends who had also visited China, during the Lunar New Year holiday, said the command center, adding that he and the other six members of the family are being isolated and tested.

Taipei, Feb. 23 (CNA) Two men in Taiwan with no recent history of overseas travel have contracted the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the number of confirmed cases in the country to 28, with one death, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Sunday.

The two new patients are a father and son in their 80s and 50s, respectively, who live in northern Taiwan, CECC Deputy Commander Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said at a press conference.

The father, who suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney problems, developed a cough and a runny nose on Feb. 6, according to Chuang...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan reported two more cases of infection by the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Monday (Feb. 24), with the 29th and 30th cases being part of a family cluster that was first recorded on Sunday (Feb. 23).

Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a press conference Monday afternoon that the two newly confirmed cases include the younger son (29th case) of the previously identified 80-year-old woman (27th case) in northern Taiwan and his mother (30th case).

The son, who is in his 40s, began experiencing a sore throat on Jan. 29, but he did not immediately go to a clinic. It was not until his father was confirmed to have contracted the SARS-like disease on Sunday that he was hospitalized and tested for the virus

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Indonesian caregiver of a man in his eighties who is Taiwan’s 27th case of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) has been diagnosed as the country’s 32nd patient, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced Wednesday (Feb. 26).

Since No. 27 was announced, his wife, two sons, and an 11-year-old grandson also tested positive for the virus. The boy probably contracted the virus during a visit to his grandfather in the hospital and later took classes at a cram school.

The CECC announced Wednesday that hospitals should demand visitors register before allowing them to meet patients.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The government is extending holiday leave for public schools in an attempt to contain the spread of China's coronavirus, but cram schools will be allowed to remain open with no face masks distributed to them, sparking fears that they could become a breeding ground for the deadly disease.

During a press conference on Sunday (Feb. 2), Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a suggestion that the first day of the spring semester be postponed for two weeks and that all missed classes be made up by students at the beginning of their initially scheduled summer vacation. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has affirmed this suggestion and announced that students will not return to school until Feb. 25, 10 days later than the originally proposed delay, and start summer vacation on July 15.

The MOE said that private cram schools, after-school programs, and private kindergartens will be allowed to remain open. It added that private kindergartens that have already started classes may proceed as usual and will receive 500,000 free child-sized masks from the government to ensure students' safety, reported Liberty Times.

However, the government did not announce any plans to distribute free masks to cram schools, known in Taiwan as "buxibans" (補習班), and after school programs. As for private kindergartens, Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung (潘文忠) said that the masks should only be given to children showing respiratory symptoms and that the unused masks should be properly stored as an emergency backup....snip

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Five new cases of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed Saturday (Feb. 29), taking the total for Taiwan to 39, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

One of the new patients had visited Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, while the four others had been in contact with case No. 34 at a hospital in north Taiwan, including three members of the nursing staff and one cleaner, CNA reported. The four had first started coughing, and then sneezing before registering a fever, according to the CECC.

The 34th case was a 50-year-old woman suffering from diabetes and cardiovascular disease who had first been hospitalized on Feb. 14 for low blood pressure and fatigue. After which, she began to show symptoms of the virus a week later.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan confirmed one more COVID-19 case in a 70-year-old woman repatriated from Japan after an ill-fated voyage on the Diamond Princess, bringing the total COVID-19 cases in Taiwan to 40, according to a statement put out by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Sunday (March 1).

CECC Commander Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that the woman continued to stay on the cruise ship after it arrived in Japan on Feb. 4. She had no symptoms of respiratory illness but tested positive for the new coronavirus on Feb. 15, and so was isolated in a hospital in Japan for treatment. Chen said that after she tested negative for the virus twice, she was released from the hospital and took a flight home.

Chen said that the woman wore a face mask on the flight and no passengers sat within two rows of her. When she arrived in Taiwan, she was escorted to a hospital for isolation and screening. After she tested positive three times, she was today confirmed to still have the virus.

All the medical professionals who came into contact with the woman wore protective gear; therefore, none of them have been required to undergo screening. The woman’s husband tested negative in Japan on Feb. 7, and he is currently being quarantined in a Japanese hotel, Chen added.

Taipei, March 2 (CNA) A member of a Taiwanese tour group traveling to Israel that flew on the same plane as an Israeli citizen infected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has been hospitalized with a respiratory illness after returning to Taiwan on Monday.

The 11-member tour group flew from Taipei to Istanbul on Feb. 27 and then from Istanbul to Tel Aviv on Turkish Airlines flight TK784 early on the morning of Feb. 28.

The Israeli passenger also took flight TK784 on his return to Israel from Japan, after having presumably recovered from his novel coronavirus infection developed on the ill-fated Diamond Princess cruise ship...

Taipei, March 5 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday confirmed two new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus, involving a woman who was likely infected by the 39th case and a man who returned from the Philippines on Tuesday.

At a press conference, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said the 43rd case is a northern Taiwan woman in her 50s who attended floral arrangement classes with the 39th case of the virus, who was diagnosed Feb. 29 after returning from a trip to Dubai and Egypt on Feb. 21...

...The 44th case, meanwhile, involves a northern Taiwan man in his 30s, who traveled to the Philippines between Feb. 28 and March 3.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The latest case of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), the 45th for Taiwan, was the eighth in a hospital cluster outbreak centered on patient No. 34, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced Friday (March 6).

The newest patient, a woman in her 50s, had stayed at the same hospital as No. 34 from Feb. 14 through 20 for unrelated treatment. On March 1 and March 5, she underwent tests just like other patients who had stayed close to No. 34, which led to her being diagnosed as a coronavirus case Friday, CNA reported.

She had no recent history of travel either domestically or overseas, according to the CECC. The woman had been taken in to a negative pressure isolation ward.

DNA test shows Taiwanese woman likely caught COVID-19 in Egypt

Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Sunday said DNA testing showed that a Taiwanese woman was most likely infected with the COVID-19 virus while traveling in Egypt last month and not necessarily the source of infection for 12 workers on a Nile cruise.

According to the CECC, the female patient, the 39th confirmed COVID-19 case in Taiwan, was traveling with a tour group to Dubai and Egypt from Jan. 29 to Feb. 21...

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday afternoon (March 12) announced that the country's 49th confirmed case of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) was a woman who just returned from a trip to Ireland and Belgium.

During a press conference on Thursday, Health and Welfare Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that a woman in her 40s from northern Taiwan on Feb. 21 flew from Taiwan to the UK, where she transferred flights to begin a trip to Ireland. On March 4 she then took a plane to Belgium, where stayed three days.

On March 7, she took a flight to Turkey and returned to Taiwan on March 8. When she first arrived in Taiwan, she was not presenting any symptoms.
