The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 29-year-old female from Bali Province developed symptoms on 3 August and was hospitalized on 7 August. She died on 12 August. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry.
The case's five-year-old daughter was sick with a respiratory illness in the days preceding the onset of illness in the confirmed case. The daughter's onset of symptoms was 26 July, she was hospitalized on 30 July but died without suspicion of avian influenza infection on 3 August in the district hospital. The child had contact with sick and dead poultry before becoming ill.
All of the household and healthcare worker contacts of the confirmed case have been traced. All remain healthy and will continue to be monitored for ten days after their last contact with the case.

Since last August (2006) there have been 9 potential H5N1 human clusters with at least one individual in the cluster confirmed by WHO. Within 5 of those cluster where onset dates are available, the onset day differential ranges from 1-9 days.

The 29-year-old female victim died at the weekend. Her five-year-old daughter died on August 3 suffering flu-like symptoms and her body was cremated before samples were taken for testing, but officials said it could be ?assumed? she died due to the virus.

Chickens had been dying in their village, on the north-west of the island far from the main tourist centres. The virus is typically transmitted to people via infected birds.

H5N1 is endemic across nearly all of Indonesia, which has recorded the highest number of bird flu deaths in the world since reporting its first case in July 2005.

Avian influenza was found in poultry on Bali more than a year ago, leading to the culling of hundreds of birds.

Officials in Jakarta have said they will step up measures on the island in a bid to limit any fallout to its tourism industry.

The H5N1 virus is regarded as a global threat because scientists fear it could mutate into a form that is easily spread among humans, leading to a pandemic with the potential to kill millions.

The English language media reports are conflicting, but the actual situation seems quite clear. The confusion is due to the interpretation of "both are positive". Some wire services assumed that "both" was the mother and daughter. Others assumed it was the mother and neighbor. However, it actually was both samples from the mother. This has bee clear for quite some time now, but the incorrect information is cited again and again.

Thus, articles in Indonesia that repeat either of the incorrect interpretations are also incorrect, even though the story is written in Indonesian.

There were no samples available from the daughter and the neighbor was negative for H5N1.
