Never mind that this same paper published a fatality figure of 110 on Sept 15th (Post #62 above). Even that number was probably a low-ball. The last believable fatality figure was released by the MOH on June 15th; 80 deaths from 14,500 cases. Since then the number of cases has increased by 270%. - Ro

Sri Lanka issues ?Red Alert? as dengue spreads
Publish By David K. Barger Updated 06/12/2012 8:36 pm in Health&Lifestyle / no comments

COLOMBO, Dec. 5 ? Sri Lankan health authorities issued a ?Red Alert? for parts of the country including the capital Colombo as dengue began to spread rapidly.

The Sri Lankan Health Ministry said in a statement on Monday that the alert had been issued for Colombo, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ratnapura, Kandy and Kegalle.

The local police together with health officials will carry out checks for dengue breeding grounds on residential and other areas in the identified locations.

Residents living in those areas have also been told to keep their environment clean and ensure there are no places where mosquitoes could lay their eggs.

Sri Lanka has been confronted with heavy rain over the past few weeks and there are fears this will help the spread of dengue.

Re: Sri Lanka Dengue 2012: 110 fatalities

So after weeks of silence, the little flurry of media reports continues. This time a ministry official is quoted as saying that the cfr is 0.05%. Given that the number of confirmed cases is 40,000, this would imply 20 deaths this year - patently and demonstrably wrong. In previous years - 2010, 2011 and the first half of 2012, the ratio of fatalities to confirmed cases has been around .61%. - Ro

Stay away from alternative treatment, ministry tells dengue patients
Nadira Gunatilleke
The Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit yesterday warned the public on alternative medicine used by various persons to treat dengue patients.

"Since there is no cure for dengue, it is possible for them to die from Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) or Dengue Shock Syndrome. Any person suffering from fever for more than two days should seek immediate medical treatment," a Health Ministry spokesman said.

...

He said seeking alternative medical treatment may increase dengue deaths in the country. The spokesman said in 2012, it was at a very low level (0.05 percent). "Patients suffering from fever for more than two days should immediately seek medical treatment from any state hospital or an experienced and qualified doctor," he said.

Dengue death toll 220 this year
Ridma Dissanayake
Dengue claimed 220 lives with nearly 50,000 cases reported this year, a Health Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

The spokesman said the mosquito density was increasing rapidly due to the current unfavourable weather conditions. He said the number of dengue cases reported from the Western Province decreased compared to the last few months while dengue cases in other provinces increased.

Around 25 percent out of the total number of deaths are those between the five to 15 age group while the balance 75 percent is in the 15 and 50 and over 50 age groups, the spokesman said.

According to the Entomology Assistant's Association the mosquito density drastically increased with the rains and floods.
