Re: Sri Lanka Dengue 2012: 85 fatalities

Re: Sri Lanka Dengue 2012: 85 fatalities

This is the first semi-official fatality figure released since July, but it is likely lower than the true figure. The cfr for the first 5.5 months of 2012 was 0.61, the cfr for 2011 was 0.65. A similar cfr this year would put the number of deaths at a much higher amount - see post directly above. - Ro

Dengue battle left in the lurch
By Fahad Al-Hatim Sunday, 30 September 2012 02:13

Officials embrace ?Dengue Mosquitoes?

Dengue prevention programmes in various parts of the country is in disarray, Health Ministry officials charged recently. Speaking to The Nation, the Chief Epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health, Dr Paba Palihawadana alleged that nearly ten government bodies were tasked with the eradication and prevention of the spread of the Dengue virus. Currently, only the Health, Defence and Urban Development, and Disaster Management Ministries are actively engaged in the directives set by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and the Secretary to the President, she pointed out.

Unprecedented dengue cases reported
By Carol Aloysius Sunday, 04 November 2012 02:08

Over 35,735 suspected dengue cases have been reported to the Government Epidemiology Unit (GEU) up to October 26. The growth is mainly attributed to the increase of mosquito breeding places due to recent adverse weather conditions.
?However, anti-mosquito programs are being conducted island wide daily,? Chief Epidemiologist, Dr. Paba Palihawadana told The Nation. Hospital authorities have been alerted and issued guidelines to prevent and minimize the spread of dengue and its complications.

?All those with fever lasting more than three days should seek medical attention,? she emphasized.
EPU sources said that complications from dengue i.e. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS) could be prevented if the symptoms were detected in time and medical attention was sought early.
