Dengue: 674 patients, seven deaths this year
Sri Lanka recorded 674 dengue patients and seven deaths from all parts of the country this year, upto last Thursday.

Last year, 28,112 dengue patients and 185 deaths were reported, Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit consultant epidemiologist Dr. Hasitha Tissera said.

Addressing the press on the National Mosquito Control Week at the Family Health Bureau yesterday, Dr. Tissera said that 34,000 dengue patients and 246 deaths were reported from the country in 2010.

One hundred people working at the Ratmalana Railway Yard have been infected with the deadly dengue virus while two have already succumbed to the fever.
When The Sunday Leader visited the site we were refused entry and had to smuggle a photograph when the gates were momentarily opened.
The yard which spans some 80 acres and located in Belekkade Junction, Ratmalana is used primarily as a maintenance and repair section for Sri Lanka Railways and has been filled with discarded rail lines, rail carriages and a variety of metals objects.
The place is on the verge of being shut down after employees were struck with the deadly dengue virus...

...From January unto now 8,462 dengue patients have been identified and 32 of them died. The number of patients is on a higher level in the Western Province and Galle and Matara areas. The number of patients reported in the month of month of January was 3,892, in February 2,979 and in March it was 1,591.

Containers or hollows where stagnant water can accumulate provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, promoting the spread of dengue. ?If there are heavy rains and flooding, dengue breeding grounds will likely be washed away,? said Sumanasiri Gamage, an independent health worker. ?However, due to intermittent rains, the breeding continues.?

Danger of dengue spreading, Sri Lanka Health Ministry warns

Apr 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Health Ministry today warned the general public that there is a danger of dengue spreading in the country at an alarming rate in the next two to three months...

...The health officials have identified 25 health divisions in the districts of Colombo, Kalutara, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Batticaloa, Matara, Kalmunai, Kegalle and Puttalam as dengue threat areas.

During the last 3 months, 10,042 suspected dengue cases and 43 deaths have been reported to the Epidemiology Unit from all over the island. During the same period last year only 3,103 cases have been reported while there were 12,018 cases reported in 2010.

Over 50 percent of dengue cases this year, amounting to 5,094, have been reported from the most-populated Western Province. There were 2,478 dengue patients in Colombo district, 1,953 in Gampaha district and 663 in Kalutara district. Out of the 43 deaths reported so far 17 were from the Colombo district where the best heath facilities in the country are available.
