Avian flu arrives in Aragon: five infected cranes in the Gallocanta lagoon
Five cranes had to be "sacrificed and incinerated" when the La Alfranca Bird Recovery Center confirmed the positive result for the H5N1 virus that is in full expansion throughout the world. There is no evidence that it affects humans but there is evidence that it is transmitted to other animal species.
David Lopez
Zaragoza | 04·01·24 | 20:51 | Updated at 21:47

There is no need to cause alarm but the bird flu has landed in the Gallocanta lagoon, in the middle of the migration of thousands of cranes, affecting five of them in recent days. It is the first outbreak of the H5N1 virus detected in this natural environment of Aragon, which on February 3 will experience a festive day taking advantage of its stay with arrivals from other latitudes. Especially in Europe, where there have been larger outbreaks that have affected thousands of them. In this case, it has been detected in only five specimens, which in compliance with the protocol, have had to be "sacrificed and incinerated."

The outbreak was detected in the last week of last year, and was one of five identified throughout Spain. This was the only one in Aragon, the other four occurred in the town of El Oso, in Castilla y León, and in the Galician towns of Xove, in the province of Lugo, and Vigo and Bueu, in the province of Pontevedra. In fact, in the global count for 2023, 58 different outbreaks of this contagious disease carried by birds and which, with difficulty, end up being transmitted to humans were recorded. Among these, only the province of Zaragoza is the one that appears on the list of epidemiological alerts, which already covers 16 more provinces throughout the country...

Five new outbreaks of bird flu detected in Vigo, Moaña, Marín, O Grove and Ordes
These new outbreaks, with more than half a dozen yellow-legged gulls affected, require extreme caution, although the status of Galicia does not change.
Rodrigo Brión Insua | Wednesday, October 2, 2024, 7:03 p.m.

New cases of bird flu detected in yellow-legged gulls, scattered in different parts of Galicia, once again put the spotlight on this disease that, according to experts, could be responsible for the next global pandemic, both due to the virus's ability to adapt and mutate and the lack of ways to combat it at the moment. Thus, the latest data from the Consellería do Medio Rural encourage extreme precautions and taking all possible measures.

FIVE NEW CASES

The Xunta has already informed the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) about the detection of eight specimens of these birds affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), as confirmed by the results of the samples analysed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete (Madrid). This is not the first case that has occurred in Galicia and the Amigas da Terra platform has already called the attention of the authorities, warning of the potential health bomb that we are facing.

On this occasion, the Xunta has located up to five new foci of this disease: three specimens in Ordes, two in Moaña and another three between Vigo, O Grove and Marín. They thus join other locations such as Pontevedra, Oleiros or the Cíes Islands, where the presence of the pathogen has also been detected.

The affected animals were transferred to the Carballedo Wildlife Recovery Centre in Cerdedo-Cotobade, facilities where Amigas da Terra urges to "extremely strict biosecurity protocols" due to the fear that bird flu could jump to humans, given that there have already been cases of this with fatalities.
