New case of bird flu in Galicia

02/14/2023

The Xunta de Galicia has detected a new case of bird flu in a yellow-legged gull found dead in Morás, in Xove (Lugo).

After the confirmation of this case by the Central Veterinary Laboratory of Algete (Madrid), the regional government has notified the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), through the Veterinary Health Alert Network.

Thirty foci of avian flu have already been reported in Galicia

According to the Ministry of Rural Affairs, the animal was transferred to the Veral Wildlife Recovery Center for analysis, subsequently eliminating the corpse in accordance with current regulations.
With this new case, the total number of outbreaks reported in Galicia is now thirty, all in wild birds, since the first one detected in August 2022.

Detected in Bizkaia two new cases of Avian Influenza in wild birds
SPAIN
The Neiker Animal Health Laboratory has detected two new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in wild birds in Bizkaia. In this case, it is the first cormorant positive for avian flu in the Basque Country, found dead in the municipality of Zierbena, and a black-headed gull found sick in Getxo, which died the following day.

BILBAO, 15 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Neiker Animal Health Laboratory has detected two new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in wild birds in Bizkaia. In this case, it is the first cormorant positive for avian flu in the Basque Country, found dead in the municipality of Zierbena, and a black-headed gull found sick in Getxo, which died the following day.

As reported by the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment in a statement, these two new cases are added to the three seagulls from the outbreak declared in the municipality of Orio last January, and to the 22 outbreaks declared in 2022. , all of them in wild birds, affecting gannets, vultures, storks, geese and geese. The new samples have already been sent to the Algete National Reference Laboratory for confirmation.

Since October 2021, Europe has been experiencing the largest avian influenza epidemic recorded to date, with more than 6,000 outbreaks having been declared in 37 countries. This animal disease can significantly affect all bird species, causing serious economic losses for the Basque poultry sector, as the Ministry has warned.

In this sense, he added that, as a consequence of the "obvious" presence of the virus in wild birds, the priority at this time is to protect poultry from contagion of the disease.

For this reason, in collaboration with the Basque poultry sector, the Basque Government and the Provincial Councils of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa have reinforced surveillance, in order to detect the virus early and be able to contain the disease in the event of outbreaks. .

At the same time, the Basque administrations, in collaboration with the Neiker and Elika Fundazioa, have prepared informative material and manuals on how to act in case of suspicion, which have been distributed both to poultry farms and to any person who may have contact with the birds. . In addition, training sessions have been organized for all staff working in the poultry sector.

On the other hand, on December 16, an Order from the Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment was published in the BOPV establishing prevention measures against avian influenza in the Basque Country. These measures are aimed at reinforcing surveillance and increasing biosecurity in poultry farms. Similarly, in recent months the presence of birds in fairs, markets, exhibitions and livestock competitions has not been authorized.

This virus has a very low potential for infection in people, and in no case can it be transmitted through the consumption of poultry meat, eggs, or any poultry-based food product. However, and in order to avoid any circulation of the virus, it is recommended not to handle wild birds that may be found

The H5N1 avian influenza virus besieges humans: it has never been so widespread or affected so many mammals

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition has detected, through the technicians of the Production and Animal Safety service, an outbreak of avian influenza in the Albufera Natural Park of Valencia that affects only waterfowl and, in particular, specimens of the common scree.

Publicity

After the alert, the Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health has activated the Protocol for Prevention, Early Detection and Control of Avian Influenza in People Exposed to Outbreaks in Birds and Mink of the Ministry of Health.

Alert for an avian flu mutation that affects minks in Spain: what is the risk for humans?

87,000 birds sacrificed after the detection of the first outbreak of avian influenza in Catalonia on a farm in Arbeca

Six people have been in direct contact with affected animals, although at the moment they are all in good health and do not show symptoms of infection.

The Feneral Directorate of Public Health has already contacted these people to apply, preventively, the measures provided for in the protocol, which consist of active monitoring of the state of health (temperature, symptoms), reduction of social interactions and a PCR test for the detection of the virus in the case of a hypothetical contagion, among others.

Publicity

As stated in the protocol, the transmission of birds to humans is a "infrequent" phenomenon, as evidenced by the "slight number of cases detected in humans despite all the foci detected in birds, and the probability of person-to-person transmission is even lower," says Health.

On the other hand, Agriculture has activated another specific protocol for poultry farms in populations near the Albufera that establishes a series of preventive measures to avoid contagion, such as covering all birds that are in the open air.:tiphat:https://www.niusdiario.es/espana/va...viar-albufera-aves-acuaticas_18_09738874.html

No symptoms": this is how the 10 people are in contact with an outbreak of avian influenza in the Community

The Ministry warned last Wednesday of the outbreak so that people in contact could take caution, although transmission is "infrequent."

Up to 10 people have been detected to have had contact with the outbreak of avian influenza detected in waterfowl in the Valencian Community. However, at the moment they are all in "good health" and "unsymptoms".

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition reported last Wednesday the detection of an outbreak of avian influenza limited to waterfowl in the Community and with six people who had had contact with them, who were in good health and showed no symptoms of infection.

Sources from the Ministry of Health have informed EFE that the virus detected in birds is H5N1, and that at the moment there are four other people being monitored, although they are all well and without symptoms.
Health had activated the Protocol of Prevention, Early Detection and Control of Avian Influenza in People Exposed to Foci in Birds and Mink of the Ministry of Health.

The General Directorate of Public Health has contacted all people to apply the measures provided for in the protocol in a preventive manner, which consist of active monitoring of the state of health (temperature intake, symptoms), reduction of social interactions and a PCR test for the detection of the virus in the case of a hypothetical contagion, among others.

According to the protocol to which the sources refer, "the transmission of birds to humans is a rare phenomenon, as evidenced by the low number of cases detected in humans despite all the foci detected in birds, and the probability of person-to-person transmission is even lower.":tiphat:https://www.elespanol.com/alicante/...nas-contacto-brote-comunitat/770173257_0.html

The Principality confirms the death of 12 wild birds due to bird flu in Asturias

The Spanish Ornithological Society asks the Principality to intensify controls

The Principality confirms the death of 12 wild birds due to bird flu in Asturias. They are mostly gannets specimens collected in 10 points of the Asturian coast.

They were found in the months of September and October, coinciding with the change of territory of these seabirds. The Principality, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, implemented biosecurity measures, explains Rocio Huerta Miguel, General Director of Livestock and Agrarian Health.

The Spanish Ornithological Society warns that the H5N1 variant is causing the worst avian flu pandemic to date, especially among seabirds in the North Sea. The NGO asks the Principality to intensify controls coinciding with a new migratory stage, says Nicolás López, SEO/BirdLife delegate in Asturias.

From the Ministry of Rural Affairs, it is highlighted that the measures put in place are working and underline that the virus has not made the leap to domestic birds, so the consumption of their meat and eggs is completely safe in our country.
