As public fear of bird flu increases, the Cheongju Land Zoo announced this week that it decided to close the bird portion of the park for the safety of both visitors and birds.
Zoo officials also began a disinfection program and all employees exposed to danger of infection have been inspected.
??We need to be careful because of the rapid spread of bird flu,?? said zoo official Kim Eung-su. ??We plan to reopen the park after the bird flu outbreaks finally end.??
According to the zoo, it has about 380 birds including chickens, ducks, flamingos, eagles, storks and cranes. Seven zookeepers and one veterinarian work at the park.
Cheongju Land is not alone in increasing its guard. Daejeon Zoo Land has been paying special attention to its pelicans and turkeys since early this week, and the Gwangju Zoo in South Jeolla established a disinfecting room at the park??s main gate.
Spectators are required to pass through the room before entering the zoo.
Meanwhile, another suspected outbreak of bird flu was reported yesterday in Nonsan, South Chungcheong, some 168 kilometers (104 miles) south of Seoul.
The South Chungcheong provincial government announced yesterday it had discovered the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu at a duck farm in the area.
It was the first confirmed case in South Chungcheong of the avian influenza virus that humans can catch.
Authorities have already slaughtered about 7,800 ducks within a 3-kilometer-radius of the infected farm in Nonsan.
??We got a report last week that several ducks at the Nonsan farm have died,?? an official of the government office said. ??It will take additional tests to confirm whether the virus is H5N1 or not.??
Currently a total of 26 outbreaks of H5N1 have been reported in South and North Jeolla and Gyeonggi provinces since April 4, when the first confirmed outbreak of bird flu was found at the Gimje farm in North Jeolla.
More than 6 million ducks and chickens have been slaughtered so far.:tiphat:

Eight cows from a farm in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, were diagnosed with Bovine Brucellosis and the government abruptly slaughtered them. With the fear of avian influenza rapidly spreading, this new development will add to people's concerns.

Bovine Brucellosis is infectious to animals and humans. It causes infertility and miscarriage in cows and coughing, high fever and rheumatism in humans.

The local government said six three-year-old cows and two seven-months-old calves were diagnosed with the disease Thursday and were slaughtered in the afternoon. The farm owner reportedly agreed to kill 9 other cows of his, which at the moment are all diagnosed as not having the disease.

The farmer, Park, said one of the cows was not fertile enough and turned out to be infected.

The government said it will observe nearby cattle and asked people to buy beef with certificates showing it to be safe from the disease, which is not rare.
There were 65 cases of cows being destroyed in Gyeonggi Province due to the disease this year. A government spokesman said cooking beef at over 100 degrees Celsius heat would make it safe to eat.

South Korea reports new case of suspected bird flu
29 Apr 2008 02:29:06 GMT
Source: Reuters
SEOUL, April 29 (Reuters) - South Korea on Tuesday reported a suspected bird flu outbreak at a chicken farm in Ulsan City, which if confirmed would be the first in the southeast, as the country grapples with its worst outbreak of avian influenza.

South Korea previously confirmed 20 cases of the H5N1 strain in poultry in less than one month, despite having killed more than 5 million chickens and ducks, as the virus spreads at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.

No human deaths from the disease have been reported in the country.

On Tuesday, the Agriculture Ministry said a chicken farm in Ulsan, some 390 km (242 miles) southeast of Seoul, reported deaths of more than 100 chickens in a week and initial tests gave positive readings for the avian virus.

Seoul has stepped up the culling of birds in affected areas and launched an investigation into all of the country's 260 duck farms in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.

South Korea had to kill 5.29 million birds during the first outbreak between late 2003 and early 2004. The second outbreak in 2006-2007 saw about half that number culled. (Reporting by Miyoung Kim; Editing by Ken Wills and Sanjeev Miglani)

S. Korea reports another suspected bird flu case

혻 혻 SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- A suspected case of bird flu was reported at a farm in the southeastern part of South Korea, the government said Tuesday, raising concerns over the nationwide spread of the disease.

혻 혻 Samples taken from the chicken farm in Ulju, about 414 kilometers southeast of Seoul, tested positive for avian influenza and more examinations are underway to determine the exact cause, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

혻혻 The owner of the farm bought chickens from a poultry merchant on April 21, with 104 out of 120 having died in the past week. Authorities have quarantined the area in accordance with standing operational procedures.

혻 혻 The death of the chickens marks the first reported case in the area this year, with most cases reported in the southwestern and centeral parts of the country.

혻혻 The ministry, meanwhile, said the latest case brings the total number of reported bird flu cases to 54. Of these 29 have tested positive for the influenza and 20 have been determined to have been caused by other diseases. The remaining five cases are currently undergoing detailed tests.

혻혻 As of early Tuesday, authorities said over five million birds have been culled and buried.

혻 혻 This is the third time the country has been affected by the bird flu outbreak. It was also hit in the winter months of 2003-2004 and 2006-2007.

Bird flu keeps spreading in worst-ever outbreak here
April 30, 2008

The worst outbreak of bird flu ever to strike the nation continues to spread.

A government body yesterday confirmed the first-ever case in southeastern Korea.

The flu originated in southwestern Korea at the beginning of the month and almost all 29 confirmed cases so far have been in that area.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries yesterday confirmed a new positive test at the Ulju chicken farm in the city of Ulsan, about 395 kilometers (245 miles) southeast of Seoul.

According to the ministry, 104 chickens died at the farm during the past week, leading to the slaughter of the remaining 16 chickens there.

The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service is conducting further tests to determine whether the avian influenza virus is the H5N1 strain, which is highly contagious to birds and can be passed to humans.

The most recent case is the first one in the Gyeongsang provinces, raising public concern that the epidemic will spread nationwide.

The final results of the tests there are expected today. If confirmed, all birds within a 3-kilometer radius will be slaughtered, said Lee Mi-ri, an official of the Ulju county office.

Since the first confirmed case of the H5N1 strain of bird flu was reported at a Gimje farm in North Jeolla, cases have been confirmed in Gimje, Jeongeup, Sunchang and Iksan in North Jeolla; Naju and Yeongam in South Jeolla; Nonsan in North Chungcheong; and Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi.

More than 6 million chickens and ducks have been slaughtered, more than the previous record of about 5 million during an outbreak in 2003, the previous worst recorded.

There has never been a confirmed human case in Korea, although one soldier who became ill recently is still being tested.

S. Korea's bird flu outbreak spreading east

혻 혻 SEOUL, April 30 (Yonhap) -- A suspected case of bird flu case has been reported at a small chicken farm in Daegu, the government said Wednesday, raising concerns that the outbreak first confirmed early this month is spreading throughout the country.

혻 혻 Initial samples taken from dead birds at the farm in the industrial city 302 kilometers southeast of Seoul tested positive for avian influenza with more detailed examinations underway to determine the exact type of the virus, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

혻혻 The death of the chickens marks the second reported case in the Gyeongsang region this year. A suspected case of bird flu was detected earlier this week in Ulju county about 400 kilometers southeast of the capital city.

혻혻 Most outbreak have taken place in the southwestern and central parts of the country.

혻 혻 The ministry, meanwhile, said the latest case brings the total number of reported bird flu cases to 55. Of these 29 have tested positive for the influenza and 21 have been determined to have been caused by other diseases. The remaining five cases are currently undergoing detailed tests.

혻혻 This is the third time the country has been affected by the bird flu outbreak. It was also hit in the winter months of 2003-2004 and 2006-2007.

Bird Flu Hits Gyeongsang Provinces
Wednesday, April 30, 2008 16:31:33

Avian influenza is spreading to the Gyeongsang provinces after hitting the Jeolla and Gyeonggi regions.

A case of bird flu has been confirmed in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province and another case is suspected in Daegu.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries found the H-Five-type avian influenza virus at a chicken farm in Ulsan. The ministry will confirm whether the virus is highly pathogenic or not by Thursday.

The death of chickens at the farm in the southeastern coastal city was reported Monday.

Quarantine authorities will cull more than 100 chickens at the infected farm and three neighboring farms.

Inspectors are investigating whether poultry raised in a Daegu home was infected with the disease, as five fowl were found dead there. Five of the remaining fowl at the home tested positive for bird flu.

As of noon on Wednesday, 55 bird flu cases have been reported. Among them 29 were confirmed to be highly pathogenic.
