Hanoi (VNA) ? Republic of Korea (RoK) health authorities on May 4 culled tens of thousands of chickens at a farm after quarantine officials said they suspected a spate of recent bird deaths were caused by another case of avian influenza.

About 57,000 chickens were killed at the farm, located about 50 kilometres away from another poultry farm in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi province, where an outbreak of the H5NI strain of the bird flu virus was confirmed in early April.

The provincial government is also taking measures to arrange for the owners of several farms within 500 metres in radius to kill 18,000 ducks, Yonhap news agency reported.
The RoK banned in April the sale of all poultry sold at traditional markets. The measures were taken after experts said the recent outbreaks in the southeastern Gyeongsang region were caused by people buying birds from such markets, which have largely escaped government oversight owing to their relatively small size.-Enditem

Highly pathogenic bird flu strain killed chickens in Daegu
----------------------------------------------------------
South Korea's quarantine service said Saturday [3 May 2008] that a
highly pathogenic strain of the bird flu virus was responsible for
the sudden death of chickens at a private home in Daegu.

The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) said
the H5N1 strain of the bird flu killed the 5 birds at the private
home in the industrial city 302 kilometers [187 miles] southeast of Seoul.

It said to prevent further spreading of the avian influenza, 260
chickens raised in 3 small-scale farms within a 3-km [1.8-mile]
radius of the home have been culled and buried.

Quarantine officials said the 5 chickens were purchased at a local
open air market and are tracking where the birds came from.

Earlier in the week, the government said it would ban the sale of all
poultry sold at traditional markets that are open at regular
intervals. The measures were taken after experts said the recent
outbreaks in the southeastern Gyeongsang region were caused by people
buying birds from such markets, which have largely escaped government
oversight owing to their relatively small size.

Authorities meanwhile said that decontamination efforts were underway
within 10 km [6.2 miles] of the Daegu home with close observation
being carried out on homes and small-time poultry farms within this zone.

The government has been catching considerable flak for failing to
contain the outbreaks, which have generally been centered around the
Jeolla region in southwestern South Korea.

Bird flu deaths advance southeast
---------------------------------
Bird flu outbreaks in Korea are spreading to Korea's southeast as
poultry deaths from the H5 virus were reported in the cities of Busan
and Daegu this week [28 Apr - 2 May 2008]. The cases came one day
after 2 new cases were confirmed Thursday [1 May 2008] in Ulsan, 69
km (43 miles) from Busan and Yeongcheon, 35 km from Daegu, officials
said yesterday.

4 chickens died at the Gijang farm in Busan and 5 chickens died in
Suseong District in Daegu this week due to the avian influenza virus.
All remaining 370 chickens at the infected sites were slaughtered.

The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service is conducting
more tests to determine if the virus that killed the chickens is the
H5N1 strain, which is highly contagious to birds and can infect humans.

Government authorities had confirmed 2 cases of bird flu in the
cities of Ulsan and Yeongcheon, Gyeongsang provinces, that led to
culling of about 50 000 poultry within a 3-km radius of the infected farms.

Authorities also ordered a ban on the movement of about 600 000 fowls
within a 10-km radius of the infected farms. "We just finished
slaughtering chickens at the bird flu-infected farms", said a
Yeongcheon county official, declining to be named. "We are very busy
trying to stop the spread of bird flu outbreak in our region".

The most recent confirmed outbreaks mean the bird flu that started at
a Gimje farm in southwestern Korea at the beginning of April 2008 is
now spreading southeast.

Since the 1st confirmed case of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza
was found at a Gimje farm in North Jeolla in early April, 31
confirmed cases have been found in Jeolla, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and
Gyeongsang provinces, prompting the slaughter of more than 6.4
million chickens and ducks.

That exceeds the culling of 5 million poultry in the 2003 bird flu outbreak.

Fresh outbreak of bird flu virus suspected

ANSEONG, South Korea, May 4 (Yonhap) -- Health authorities have culled tens of thousands of chickens at a farm here Sunday after quarantine officials said they suspected a spate of recent bird deaths were caused by another case of avian influenza.

About 57,000 chickens were killed at the farm, located about 50 kilometers away from another poultry farm in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, where an outbreak of the H5NI strain of the bird flu virus was confirmed in early April, they said.

"We are trying to confirm whether the deaths of chickens at the chicken farm in Gangdeok-ri, Anseong City, owned by Yu were caused by the highly pathogenic strain of the bird flue virus," a spokesman for the Gyeonggi Provincial Government said, noting about 3,700 chickens died at the farm for unknown reasons over the past couple of days.

The provincial government said it has mobilized about 200 people to quarantine the farm and kill contamined poultry.

The provincial government is also taking measures to arrange for the owners of several farms within 500 meters in radius to kill 18,000 ducks.

The South Korean government banned in April the sale of all poultry sold at traditional markets. North Korea inoculates poultry against bird flu following outbreak in South Korea

</TD></TR><TR><TD>SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea said Monday it has inoculated poultry against bird flu to prevent the spread of the virus from neighboring South Korea.
The North's Korean Central News Agency quoted quarantine official Ri Kyong Gun as saying all poultry in provinces near the border with the South have received emergency vaccinations, citing a bird flu outbreak in southern South Korea.
South Korea has slaughtered about 6.5 million chickens, ducks and other poultry since early last month when bird flu broke out there for the first time in more than a year.
Ri was quoted as saying the North has also set up 1,600 observation posts along the east and west coasts to monitor the movement of migratory birds - which he said are a key way the virus spreads.
The North has intensified its quarantine efforts on poultry farms and ordered farmers to keep their poultry in pens to stop them from coming into contact with migratory birds, it said.
The North banned South Korean poultry and eggs from a joint South-North industrial zone late last month, according to the Kaesong Industrial District Management Committee.
South Korea had been sending 85,000 tons of chicken and 127,000 eggs to the complex in the North Korean border city of Kaesong every month for food for workers there, according to the South Korean Unification Ministry.
Bird flu hit North Korea in 2005, leading to the killing of about 210,000 birds, but no new cases have been reported since then.:tiphat:

Gov't takes drastic action to check bird flu spread

혻혻 By Lee Joon-seung
SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) -- The government said Monday that it will kill and bury 400,000 birds in Anseong after a poultry farm reported a suspected avian influenza outbreak over the weekend.

혻혻 The measure that affects 12 poultry farms in the city 77 kilometers south of Seoul is being taken despite the lack of definitive test results indicating why several thousand birds died suddenly, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said.

혻혻 It said the stepped-up quarantine measures are designed to prevent the further spread of the virus that has resulted in the culling of 6 million birds since April. In the past, the government usually waited for definitive test results before destroying birds in nearby farms.

혻혻 A poultry farmer reported on Sunday that of the 57,000 chickens he is raising 4,000 died within a very short period.

혻 혻 "The initial on-site tests conducted at the chicken farm showed the existence of the H5 bird flu strain," an official said. He added all surviving birds at the farm have been destroyed while those within a three kilometer radius are being culled.

혻혻 The outbreak in Anseong is the second time a bird flu outbreak has been reported in Gyeonggi province. The first case was in Pyeongtaek near Anseong, when birds tested positive for the virulent H5N1 strain of the bird flu.

혻 혻 The ministry, meanwhile, said that the Anseong case brings the number of bird flu reports to 59 this year. Of these, 32 were caused by the influenza and 21 were caused by other diseases. The remaining six cases are currently undergoing detailed tests.

혻혻 The country has been hit twice before by bird flu outbreaks, once during the winter months of 2003-2004 and once during 2006-2007.

Zoonotic diseases: How do they affect the public?
May 06, 2008

This month, a highly contagious strain of avian influenza broke out in poultry farms in Gimje and Jeong-eup, North Jeolla Province and Nonsan in South Chungcheong Province. This is the third outbreak of avian influenza in Korea since 2003.

Livestock farms and related food industries have been severely damaged by the spread of avian influenza (bird flu) viruses.

Above all, the general public is very concerned that humans can be infected by the viruses.

In fact, a soldier, who was dispatched to destroy infected birds, recently had to be treated at a hospital since he was suspected of being infected by the virus.

Recently, zoonotic diseases, or contagious diseases infecting both humans and animals, have become global pandemics, including bird flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the human form of mad cow disease and brucellosis.

Bird flu has spread to 40 countries and caused 239 deaths since 2003.

What are zoonotic diseases?
Zoonotic diseases are diseases caused by infectious agents that both animals and humans can catch. Zoonotic diseases make up 70 percent of all epidemic diseases.

The carriers of the diseases are bacteria, viruses and parasites. The diseases are transmitted when people come into direct or indirect contact with infected animals.

What effects do these diseases have on humans?
Historically, zoonotic diseases have been lethal to humans.
The reason why the diseases are so lethal is that they develop diverse strains of viruses through genetic mutation. Thus, the human body does not have time to adjust to a new strain of virus and its immune system does not work properly. This is why zoonotic diseases cause significant deaths in a short time.

In the past 100 years, three influenza pandemics caused by new viruses have occurred around the world.

The 1918 Spanish flu resulted in 50 million deaths. The 1957 Asian flu and the 1968 Hong Kong flu caused 1 million and 700,000 deaths, respectively. In total, the number of deaths exceeded the number of those killed during World War I and II. [It is difficult to establish exactly how many people died in WWII: some demographic studies point between 15 to 30 millions of death for ex-USSR alone. IOH]

What causes zoonotic disease?
Experts say that zoonotic diseases began occurring after humans adopted agriculture. As people started raising animals such as cows, pigs, sheep or horses and used them for food or cultivation, diseases were transferred from animals to humans.

Rabies, a viral disease affecting mammals, is most often transmitted from dogs or raccoons to humans. It was mentioned in a legal document from ancient Mesopotamia 4,000 years ago.

The reason why zoonotic diseases are more prevalent these days is that the diseases infectious agents are rapidly spread by the movement of animals.

For instance, scientists once thought migrant birds transmitted avian influenza. However, the current outbreak of avian influenza in South Korea occurred after winter migratory birds had left the country. Others raised skepticism about this theory.

Some claim that the primary cause of zoonotic diseases is people's greed.

''The fundamental cause of zoonotic disease is modern mass production in animal husbandry in a bid to maximize profit and minimize costs,' said Park Sang-pyo, director of a civic group of veterinarians.

''Animals, raised in overcrowded factory farms, tend to have very weak immune systems and are easily exposed to viruses such as avian influenza.''

Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopthy, is known to have emerged because people fed meat and other animal food to herbivores to save on feed costs.

''While humans recklessly tinkered with nature, they destroyed the environment by distorting the ecosystem. Thus the number of viruses and insects that transmit diseases to wild animals or livestock increased,'' said Lee Hang, a professor the Seoul National University College of Veterinary Medicine.
''Zoonotic diseases were created by humans themselves.''
Other scientists cite the growing mobility of people and animals, thanks to advances in transportation and trade, as one of the reasons behind the spread of infectious zoonotic diseases.

What should be done to prevent these diseases?
The most important thing to prevent the spread of these diseases is to track their routes. Humans conquered the Black Death after the discovery that the epidemic was transmitted by infected rat fleas.
In addition, individuals have to pay careful attention to sanitation in their everyday lives, such as washing their hands more often. Viral diseases could be lethal when a person has a weak immune system; therefore it is important to strengthen the immune system by improving nutrition.

''To prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases, people have to understand that animals and plants have direct contact with viruses,'' said Park Seung-cheol, professor of Samsung Medical Center.
''For this goal, close cooperation among doctors, veterinarians and government ministries is needed.''
Some experts claim that we should conduct research on diseases among wild as well as domestic animals.

As current research on zoonotic diseases focuses on domestic animals such as cows and chickens, it is not enough to prevent a new epidemic.

Some experts argue that humans can only conquer these diseases when we realize that humans should coexist safely with domestic animals and wild animals.

South Korea has confirmed 24 cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry in about a month. It has killed more than 5 million chickens and ducks but that has not stopped the virus from spreading at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.
The four birds were among 57 chickens, ducks and turkeys raised in pens at the district office in the eastern part of Seoul. The ministry said it would take about a day to confirm if the dead birds had contracted the H5N1 strain.
The city had culled all the birds at the site and was limiting access to a nearby zoo and livestock market, the ministry said.
Most of the outbreaks have been concentrated in the southwest of the country.
South Korea had to kill 5.29 million birds during the first outbreak between late 2003 and early 2004. The second outbreak in 2006-2007 saw about half that number culled.
On Monday, North Korea said it was stepping up measures to prevent the outbreak from being carried over its borders by migratory flocks.

The bird flu outbreak that has swept South Korea reached the capital Seoul on Tuesday, prompting quarantine officials to decontaminate and limit access to a nearby children's park and open air market.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said tests conducted on four birds that started dying off from late April showed they were contaminated with the H5 avian influenza virus.

The bird vivarium located at the Gwangjin ward office in eastern Seoul raised 57 chickens, ducks, pheasants and turkeys. The outbreak marks the first time that the avian influenza has hit Seoul since quarantine officials received reports of wholescale bird deaths on April 1.

The ministry said all birds in the vivarium have been culled and buried as a precautionary measure, while detailed tests to determine if the deaths were caused by a virulent strain of the bird flu will be made known later in the day.

"Interviews with the ward's workers revealed that the pheasant that died on April 28 was bought at a livestock market in Seongnam, south of Seoul," a quarantine official said. He added that inspectors have been dispatched to the market to check for additional contamination and to find out how the pheasant got sick.

The expert said while there was little chance of the bird flu spreading in an urban environment, authorities have sealed off Children's Grand Park located 1.2 kilometers from the vivarium and Gyeongdong market, where some live poultry transactions take place.

Most of the initial bird flu cases reported this year were centered in the Jeolla region in southwestern South Korea. It has since spread through most of the country with bird deaths being reported in Gyeongsang region in the southeast and two cities in Gyeonggi Province south of Seoul.

South Korea reports first bird flu outbreak in capital

The Associated Press
Tuesday, May 6, 2008
SEOUL, South Korea: South Korea reported the first bird flu outbreak in its capital Tuesday, prompting health authorities to kill birds at zoos in and around the city.
Bird flu began sweeping southern parts of the country last month for the first time in more than a year, forcing the slaughter of about 6.5 million poultry.
The Agriculture Ministry said initial tests confirmed an outbreak in poultry on the compound of a local government office in eastern Seoul, and further tests were under way to determine whether it was caused by the virulent H5N1 virus.
Results were expected later Tuesday, the ministry said.
Kim Chang-sup, an Agriculture Ministry official, said it is the first time bird flu has reached Seoul.
He said two pheasants that were brought to the Gwangin-gu local government office from a farm market south of Seoul had carried the disease. They died later and infected two other birds, he said.
Quarantine workers destroyed all 53 other pheasants, chickens and turkeys that were being raised in a cage at the government office for children to view, Seoul City Hall said in a statement.
As a precaution, officials also slaughtered 63 birds at Children's Grand Park, a major amusement park about 1.2 kilometers (less than a mile) from the outbreak site, and 191 birds at Seoul Grand Park, another theme park south of the capital.
Other birds at the two parks have been disinfected and put off limits to visitors, City Hall said.

The AI diffusion course the traditional market authorities counted a traditional market on the focus course where the AI is diffused with national. The AI which occurs from the chollapuk_do area moves with the duck chicken pheasant and it goes and at the entire country it is spreading and the traditional market the important course of infection is becoming is the thing specially. It passes by the Kyonggi-Do peony market where also the AI which occurs from Seoul storehouse position nine is expatiation traditional market came the thing is explanation of the authorities. The agriculture and fisheries foodstuffs vice- officials will see and "what in the small-sized truck to load the chicken duck it will come and go and at selling which sells by the field the AI is diffused with the fact that and" "the AI of the Seoul back city center will go to extremes from the point where is not the fact that it does not occur with oneself there was not a necessity which it will worry and it talked". Until now the specialists when the AI occurs from our country, 1~2 even from Japan after month discuss the fact where the AI is discovered with ground of migratory bird infection and it is because comes. AI occurrence is continued the disease prevention authorities fell and the chicken - a duck back domestic fowl transactions from traditional market from the 1st day which passes the body to lead it forbade. Also against the small-scale truck 300 women's university who comes in and out to traditional market it executes disinfecting. Against the remaining birds of these animal unit it took a disinfecting and entrance and exit control back disease prevention management. Enough there is a possibility where the next AI in addition will occur but. Before controlling a traditional market, already it falls in and it is because the mediation water which goes out will be able to diffuse the AI. The agriculture and fisheries foodstuffs vice- officials "the A1 compared to the possibility which will occur it is but thoroughly as is conducting a disease prevention the degree which will be serious talked without being". Large Professor Kim re-Hong Seoul National University veterinarian "the control against a traditional market without the effect of flesh disposal back management of existing was not only a possibility of becoming adverse sentiment and" "human body infection worry of the AI it is not but must execute quickly, basically the disease prevention authorities prerequisite did all possibilities in current status and the disease prevention of traditional market it sees" it indicated. Problem it isn't to disease prevention countermeasure and the AI which is started from previous month 3rd chollapuk_do Kimje until Seoul spreading out the disease prevention authorities nuk the tall figure of shabby management and the farmhouse, is because the illegal taking out back operated composition at only one months. Specially this time AI indigenous chicken back traditional market in traditional market control and the disease prevention authorities who is visible the aspect which is quickly diffused in the center when it enters recently, to come out start, the hole ttwul lyess all in disease prevention watch. The disease prevention authorities the flesh disposes the domestic fowl of the occurrence hour neighborhood area initially and it concentrates in only movement control and well it will not write the nerve in the small-scale chicken - the duck sale coat truck back transport vehicle quantity and 5th berry traditional market of the entire country. The AI which is started from chollapuk_do Ulsan and is diffused with Taegu back southeastern Korea volume and the me Oh! already the traditional market is paid attention on the important infection course at small-scale mediating the back it leads and spreads out after going out, at the entire country and and it was. After the disease prevention authorities the flesh disposes together initially from inside place of origin point 500 m, it will confirm an additional occurrence yes or no from circumference and the management which magnifies the disposal scope which it will live with 3 insufficiency was is a cadastral map. All flesh it disposed 3 Anui domestic fowls basically 2006~2007 in anti-epidemic measure of year to compare and it is evaluated the judgement which is prudent from the side of the compensation expense back if the flesh inside 3 it disposed initially positively, also the assertion will loosen a diffusion speed is coming out. Only 600 ducks it is taken out even in after where the disease prevention belt is set in Kimje and phyey the company the hardship accomplishes immediately and support also the non- cooperation of the back farmhouse which is not is indicated with problem point. keunyoung@yna.co.kr (end)

Avian Influenza Hits Seoul
05-06-2008 19:01
By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

Avian influenza was reported to have reached Seoul, Tuesday, 35 days after the first outbreak in the southwestern provinces. The ``ambush'' on the capital comes as public concern has been focused on fears over mad cow disease associated with imports of U.S. beef.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries confirmed the presence of avian flu at an aviary in Gwangjin, eastern Seoul, the first in the capital since the outbreak on April 1 in southwestern Jeolla Province.

The authorities have taken quarantine measures to prevent the flu from spreading further by decontaminating the aviary and limiting access to a nearby children's park and open market. They have yet to confirm if the disease is the H5N1 strain that can also be deadly to humans.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, it first received a report that two pheasants were found dead on April 28 and later one turkey and two chickens.

The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) examined the cause of the deaths and confirmed that the birds died of avian flu.

``We advise citizens to wash their hands after outdoor activities and avoid physical contact with birds,'' a city official said during a news conference at the City Hall.

NVQRS officials killed and buried all the chickens, ducks, pheasants and turkeys at the aviary and closed it down.

They said it was unlikely that the disease will spread into the urban environment, but have killed some 220 birds and disinfected others after sealing off the Children's Grand Park, 1.2 kilometers away from the aviary, and Gyeongdong market where poultry is sold.

``The chances are slim for our birds to be infected by bird flu. But we've taken precautionary measures and decided to kill birds vulnerable to the disease,'' an official from the park said.

Meanwhile, the government said it will immediately kill and bury poultry from farms where a suspected avian influenza outbreak is reported.
