I have updated the South Korea case list here.

I believe the 58 year old lady who was diagnosed as a coronavirus MERS case after her death is case #25 above since the description most closely matches her age.

I also believe the other death is the male, 71, shown as case #6 above.


Our sincere condolences to all of the friends and families of those affected.

SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported the country's first two deaths from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Tuesday, saying a suspected patient was confirmed to have the virus after death and another confirmed patient also died.

The health ministry also reported six new cases of the viral disease, bringing the total to 25. The new cases included the country's first tertiary infections as two people were found to have contracted the virus from a secondarily-infected patient.

I hope the WHO comes out soon with some clarification about "tertiary". According to the MoH report above all of the cases were infected "in the same ward" as a previous case.

South Korea on Tuesday reported the first two deaths from an outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) that has affected 25 people in two weeks.

A 58-year-old woman who had had contact with South Korea's first patient died of acute respiratory failure on Monday, the Health Ministry said. A 71-year-old man who had been on respiratory support with a history of kidney ailments also died.

The ministry reported new confirmed cases on Tuesday, bringing the total to 25. South Korea now has the third highest number of cases after Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The 58-year-old woman who died on Monday, or Patient No. 25, have been treated for difficulty in breathing due to her asthma since May 11 and had contact with the first patient from May 15 to May 17. The countermeasure headquarters added that the patient had underlying conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure and Cushing's syndrome, a hyperadrenocorticism due to prolonged exposure to steroid, which may have taken a toll after she caught MERS.

Patient No. 6, who had contact with the first patient while he stayed at the same ward, tested positive for MERS on Thursday. The countermeasure headquarters also said the 71-year-old man had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and had one of his kidney removed due to cancer in 2011.

The problem is the two new tertiary infected people, who are Patients Nos. 23 and 24.

Patient No. 1 returned to Korea on May 4 and began to show symptoms on May 11, and he subsequently visited four different hospitals until he was correctly diagnosed with MERS.

The two tertiary infected patients stayed in the same hospital room with Patient No. 16 at the fourth hospital visited by the first patient. Patient No. 16 contracted diseased from the first patient at the second hospital, where most of secondary infection occurred.

Tertiary infection is considered a huge threat given that it usually means the disease was transmitted due to lax preventive measures and it suggests possible spread among people outside of quarantine coverage. The headquarters, however, said the two tertiary infections were made within medical facility, playing down possibility of spread among public.

The four other new patients were found to have caught the disease from the first patient at the second hospital.

The health ministry also reported six new cases of the viral disease, bringing the total to 25. The new cases included the country's first tertiary infections as two people were found to have contracted the virus from a secondarily infected patient.

However, the confirmed tertiary transmission of the disease may warrant serious concerns as it now makes all 25 people who have been diagnosed with the disease a carrier.

Previously, the government had only isolated some 70 people who had come in close contact with the first patient, maintaining that no tertiary transmission of the disease had ever been reported throughout the world.

As of Monday morning, 682 people who have ever come in close contact with any of the patients were in isolation at state-designated facilities or their homes.

A 58-year-old woman, who died Monday for acute incompletion of respiratory organ, was confirmed positive for the MERS Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

The woman moved to a hospital in Gyeonggi Province from the hospital where a number of MERS infectees were identified. She was initially excluded from the quarantine list as she didn't share a room with the first patient.

The health authorities finally traced her at the Gyeonggi hospital on Sunday night, a day before she passed away. Then, the hospital began to put the woman and her medical staffs under quarantine and observation.

The 71-year-old man passed away Tuesday. He could have been put under isolation on May 20 when the patient zero was tested positive, but he was belatedly isolated after being excluded from the quarantine list.

Among the new cases were two tertiary infections, raising fears over an exponential increase in contagion.

Two males aged 73 and 78 each, who had close contact with the 16th infected man, 40, were tested positive.

The two tertiary infectees shared a room for three days from May 28 at the hospital where the 40-year-old man, who was infected from the first patient, was hospitalized before being confirmed positive for the MERS.

The 16th infectee was initially excluded from the government's isolation list, and was later tested positive for the viral disease after the health authorities conducted the broader epidemiological survey.

Out of the 23 patients, two were infected with the virus at a hospital where the 16th patient stayed.

This was the first infection to take place outside the first patient's hospital, raising concerns over a possible pandemic.

"Tertiary infections from other patients may rise, but this doesn't mean the public is in danger. All the confirmed patients are already in hospitals," Health Minister Moon Hyung-pyo said in a media briefing in Seoul.

Health officials said more than 750 people have been quarantined in their homes or medical facilities after coming into contact with patients. But the number is likely to snowball after the tertiary infection was confirmed.
