A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) was confirmed at a broiler farm in Manseok-dong, Iksan-si, Jeollabuk-do.

This confirmed case marks the third in North Jeolla Province this winter and the 32nd nationwide. Quarantine authorities are making every effort to contain the spread, issuing immediate culling orders and movement restrictions.

Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Kwan-young) announced on the 5th that the H5 antigen detected at the farm in question was finally confirmed as highly pathogenic (H5N1) through a detailed examination.

Since September 12th of last year, a total of 32 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been reported nationwide. Nine cases have occurred in Gyeonggi Province, eight in North Chungcheong Province, six in South Jeolla Province, five in South Chungcheong Province, and three more in North Jeolla Province, demonstrating the unabated nationwide spread.

Immediately after confirming the antigen, quarantine authorities dispatched an emergency response team to the site and completely restricted access to the farm.

An emergency culling of 63,000 broiler chickens at the farm is underway. This is a necessary measure to prevent the spread of the virus...

[FONT=바탕]This winter season, for the first time in Korea , three types of viruses ( serotypes : H5N1, H5N6, H5N9) were detected in wild birds and poultry farms , and in particular, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus ( serotype H5N1) confirmed in Korea this winter season was confirmed to be more than 10 times more infectious than in previous years, making the situation very serious with a higher risk of additional outbreaks than ever before .[/FONT]
[FONT=바탕]As seen in the past when the most cases occurred in December and January , the number of cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been increasing since December during this winter season as well , and the cases are particularly concentrated in the Gyeonggi , Chungcheong , and Jeolla regions where chicken and duck are raised. [FONT=바탕]Immediately after the H5 strain was confirmed at a laying hen farm in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province on Thursday , February 5 , the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters dispatched an initial response team in accordance with the ' Avian Influenza Emergency Action Guidelines (SOP)' to control access , and is conducting an epidemiological investigation along with emergency culling of the farm where the outbreak occurred to prevent further spread .

[FONT=바탕]Additionally , in order to prevent the spread of the disease , a standstill order was issued for 24 hours from 10:00 PM on Thursday , February 5 to 10:00 PM on Friday, February 6 for farms , facilities , and vehicles related to laying hens in South Chungcheong Province and Gyeonggi Province, the outbreak areas , and compliance is being monitored .

[FONT=바탕]First , a special quarantine inspection will be conducted from February 6 to February 20 on 75 laying hen farms nationwide with more than 200,000 birds , focusing on the operation and work of control posts , the status of dedicated officers , and compliance with administrative orders and public notices .
[FONT=바탕]Second , a dedicated person * will be designated for each poultry farm within the quarantine area (~10km) of a farm where highly pathogenic avian influenza has occurred and for each laying hens farm with more than 50,000 birds nationwide to continuously manage the poultry farm in charge until the end of February .

S. Korea reports 1 new bird flu case; total rises to 51

SEOUL, March 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has confirmed one additional case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at a layer farm north of Seoul, bringing the total number of cases reported this season to 51, authorities said Sunday.

The latest case was detected at a poultry farm in Pocheon, about 40 kilometers north of the capital, according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters.

Authorities have restricted access to the affected farm, begun culling the birds and launched an epidemiological investigation, officials said.

A 24-hour standstill order has also been imposed on nearby poultry farms to curb further spread of the virus, they added.

The government urged farms to strictly comply with quarantine and hygiene measures, including access controls and thorough disinfection, amid the seasonal migration of wild birds toward the end of winter.

[FONT=바탕]In addition , as additional outbreaks were confirmed at laying hen farms in Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do Province emphasized that it will do its best to prevent additional outbreaks by not only operating a dedicated poultry farm manager in Pocheon-si and conducting environmental inspections of laying hen farms, but also establishing and implementing its own quarantine management plan that takes into account on-site conditions .
