It makes LITTLE difference in WHAT is tested. Any group that gets ONE positive low path when testing over 1 thousand birds has some SERIOUS probelms.

It's not the test. It's the TESTERS. This is gross incompetence at BEST.

Geez Sally, they took 2 samples from both ends, 2 of blood and 1 sample of feathers from live birds. I think lopping off hunks of skin in addition might be a little overkill. :)

I suspect any testing stresses wild birds quite a bit. Capture in itself is bad enough.

The testing is a joke. Avian influenza is called avain influenza because it is COMMON in wld birds. Some groups get infleunza A positives in 50% of birds tested. Getting 1 positive in 1000 - 2000 birds says the program is absurd. There really are THOUSANDS of ways to generate false negatives, and it really just takes ONE to get negatives across the board.

Publishing a report on ONE low path positive indicates either the authors are clueless, they expect readers of the report to be clueless, or both.

What's in it for the United States Department of Agriculture to encourage deception when it comes to wild birds?

I would think they would be really motivated to;
1. know when H5N1 hits our shores and
2. keep our poultry protected from an outbreak.

They certainly hope you would think that. What do you think happened on Prince Edward Island when the DEAD gosling(s) were H5 positive?

Following these figures you expected South Africa would find about 1000 positive tests for low path avian influenza?

Canada was getting 50% positives in the fall of 2005 (but STILL hasn't found high path H5N1 other than Prince Edward Island). The rates will vary, depending on target population, but 0.1% is clearly an indication that the data is bogus.

These types of arguments became VERY old in 2005. Finding H5N1 in wild birds doesn't protect poultry. It depresses the poultry market. The surveillance programs are a joke, In Canada they found ZERO H7 isolates in wild birds, but had major outbreaks in British Columbia and Saskachewan (both H7N3). A recent report indicated the H7 primers were out of date and would NOT work on wild bird isolates. In Europe they also failed to find H7 in wild birds but had major outbreaks in the Netherlands (H7N7), England (H7N3 and H7N2), and most recently in Denmak (H7N1).

On Prince Edward island the lab refused to state the size of the H5 PCR insert and held the sample for 10 days before shipping degraded material to Winnipeg. Most of the H5N1 positive wild bird samples in the US fail to yield virus, and most of those that do yield virus don't yiwld H5N1 (even though they are all H5N1 PCR positive).

There is now an electronic trail along with the MANY press releases (and 350,000 negatives) from conservation groups.

The facts on H5N1 in wild birds that were obvious in 2005 are MUCH more obvious in 2008.

174 H5N9 and H5N2 BC
5 H5N1 Manitoba
9 H5N1 Ontario
28 H5N3 Quebec

Alberta had 796 samples and all came back 0 for H5 & H7

But they also had many low path serotypes that were not H5 or H7 (and the primers for H7 were not current, so they had ZERO positives, even though they could properly collect samples to detect low path).
