Epidemiological data show increase of influenza and other ARI activity in Russia in comparison with previous week. The nationwide ILI & ARI morbidity level (59.6 per 10 000 of population) was lower than the national baseline for season 2015-2016 (69.5) by 14.2%.
ILI and ARI epidemic thresholds were not exceeded in all of 60 cities collaborating with two WHO NICs in Russia.

Cumulative number of diagnosed influenza cases

Cumulative results of influenza laboratory diagnosis by different tests were submitted by 53 RBLs and two WHO NICs. According to these data as a result of 1874 patients investigation the overall proportion of respiratory samples positive for influenza was estimated as 0.6%, including 0.4% for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, 0.1% for influenza A(H3N2) virus, 0.05% for influenza A and 0.05% for influenza B virus.

In sentinel surveillance system clinical samples from 83 SARI and ILI/ARI patients were investigated by rRT-PCR. No influenza cases were detected.

Etiology of ILI & ARI morbidity. The overall proportion of respiratory samples tested positive for influenza was estimated as 34.7%. Percent of positive ARI cases of non-influenza etiology (PIV, adeno- and RSV) was estimated as 22.2% of investigated patients by IFA and 8.0% by PCR.
Antigenic characterization. Totally 44 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 2 A(H3N2) viruses were characterizated antigenically in two NICs of Russia since the beginning of the season. 34 (77.3%) influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 strains were related closely to influenza A/California/07/09 virus, 10 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses had decreased up to 1/16 titers in interaction with antiserum to this virus. Two A(H3N2) strains were similar to influenza A/Hong-Kong/4801/2014 virus and reacted with antiserum to influenza A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 up to 1/4 - 1/8 of homological titer in HI.
Genetic characterization. Two positive for influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 clinical samples and isolated in December 2015 influenza A/St.Petersburg/349/15 virus were identical for 97.8% to A/California/07/09 and for 99.0% to A/South Africa/3626/13 influenza reference viruses. All investigated strains had following substitutions in HA: S84N, S162N+ and I216T.
In sentinel surveillance system clinical samples from 11 SARI and 13 ILI/ARI patients were investigated by rRT-PCR. 5 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 SARI cases were detected.

Four swine flu-related deaths were recorded in the southern region of Rostov among the 120 reported cases of the virus in the area, authorities said Tuesday.
These latest cases follow the deaths of four adults and one child from the virus in the nearby region of Dagestan, and the deaths of two infected patients in Yekaterinburg and the southern region of Adygea.

Moscow (AFP) - At least 17 people have died of swine flu in Russia since last month, according to AFP calculations based on statements from regional health authorities, as the virus appears to gain ground in the country.

"Five people have died from the H1N1 virus in Saint Petersburg," the spokeswoman for local health authorities, Maria Khitarishvili, told AFP on Tuesday. "Identification procedures for three other flu-related deaths have yet to be completed."

Local authorities in Russia's second-largest city said that 313 people had been hospitalised with the virus in the last 10 days.

Four swine flu-related deaths were also recorded in the southern region of Rostov among the 120 reported cases of the virus in the area, authorities said Tuesday.
