If we "fly" from Harbin (or the Yantze Delta further south), heading northeast to summer Siberian breeding grounds - the birds would pass thru Atamanovka just before arriving at beautiful Lake Baikal, then on north to the mosquito/wetlands rich tundra. Looking closely at the map, the major lake between Harbin and Atamanovka is in the wetlands near Manzhouli. I wonder if there are cases in that area also?

PS: I just saw the case in Wuhan - once again it appears the birds are flying right up the longitude lines!

I hope it was just part of the translation, but if they are looking for H5N1 through "bacteriological analyses", they may have a flawed testing protocol.

Does anyone know what ORVI is? (Edited: I found it. "ostrye respiratornye virusnye infekcii") It seems it is commonly mistaken for avian flu in Russia. All I can find is a few sites talking about it in conjunction with malaria.

I found a website that had some info. I don't know how reliable it is.

ORVI = ARVI, I think.

I googled "OVRI viral infection" on the hunch that the "VI" part stood for "viral infection." I found a bunch of references then to AVRI -- acute respiratory viral infection. In other words, an infection of the upper and/or lower respiratory tract(s) caused by any number of viruses/bacteria.

ostrye may mean "outside" - ie., pleural infection, or infection of fluid outside of the lungs. See here for diagram.

Actually, secondary bacterial infections are to be expected as the H5N1 destroys the epithelial cells. I'll look for that report.

my (non-expert) understanding of the process, is that the H5N1 virus starts to detroy the ciliated epithelial cells in the airways. Since it cannot be effectively stopped, it destroys a considerable portion of those cells. The destruction is so bad that fluids leak out and covers those areas, creating an ideal environment for secondary bacterial infections.

Remember the young man from ?Thialand/Vietnam who recovered but had severe lung damage? - he's the outcome.
