AVIAN INFLUENZA in Réunion Measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus

On September 30, 2022, the State services were informed of a suspicion of avian influenza in four family poultry farms located in the heights of Saint-Paul in Reunion. Preventive measures were immediately put in place at these sites. Following confirmation of positivity to the H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIHP), measures aimed at eradicating the risk were deployed immediately, including the euthanasia of poultry and ducks held at the 4 sites concerned.

In this context, a regulated area composed of a 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone have been determined by prefectural decree published today.

Within this regulated zone, prescriptions aimed at preventing the spread of the virus are provided for, including in particular:

• Reporting obligations for professionals and individuals who keep poultry;
• Veterinary visits to places where poultry are kept at the request of the DAAF of La Réunion to check the health status of the animals;
• The obligation to immediately report to the Reunion DAAF any appearance, on poultry, of clinical signs suggestive of avian influenza or any increase in mortality as well as any significant drop in production data;
• The implementation of biosecurity measures: information on biosecurity for professionals and individual holders is available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty:
https://agriculture.gouv.fr /avian-influenza-biosecurity-measures-for-professional-operators-and-individuals ;
• Recommendations to avoid, as far as possible, gatherings of people raising, holding or in contact with poultry or other birds,
• Prohibition of gatherings of birds and in particular live poultry at fairs, markets, exhibitions and gallodromes (cockfighting places),
• The ban on releasing game birds.

The Prefect of Reunion calls on each and everyone, professional or holder on a family or personal basis, to be extremely vigilant and, within the regulated zone, to strictly respect the prescriptions in the face of this risk which may have economic and animal health consequences. very important.

Failure to comply with the prescriptions of the prefectural decree is criminally punishable and each case of violation reported to the State services, or noted by them, will be systematically prosecuted.

Any suspicion, including abnormal mortality, must be systematically reported to the DAAF of La Réunion (alimentation.daaf974@agriculture.gouv.fr).

Avian flu in Reunion: Philippe Naillet calls on Reunionese to be "responsible"

Deputy Philippe Naillet speaks about avian flu.

Avian flu in Reunion: Philippe Naillet calls on Reunionese to be "responsible"

The press release: The first cases of avian flu were detected at the end of September in Reunion, in the heights of the West. This alert was handled urgently by the State services, whose responsiveness I salute. Indeed, this viral disease which affects wild birds is particularly deadly for farmed birds such as our hens and ducks. Highly transmissible between animals, it requires massive slaughter of animals, fruits of the hard work of breeders. In this period of preparation for the end of year celebrations, the protection of professional and family farms is essential to allow Reunionese families to taste good curries made from local products.

If the passion of many of us for nature and animals is strong, family breeding or the presence of birds at home nevertheless obliges us to have a great responsibility to limit the spread of the virus. We must collectively respect the rules limiting the movement of farm animals and birds around areas affected by avian flu. I am thinking in particular of our fans of “batay cok”.

We must not take any risks for our biodiversity and our farming sectors. Let's be reasonable so as not to create new outbreaks of avian flu.

Philippe NAILLET,
Deputy for the 1st constituency of Reunion

From November 2: disinfection mat for passengers in Reunion

1 Nov 2022 07h00

Passengers coming from Reunion must pass over a disinfection mat before setting foot on Mauritian soil. This is the decision taken as part of the resumption of flights from the sister island to Mauritius and Rodrigues from November 2. A health control qualified as necessary due to the prevalence of the bird flu epizootic on the sister island.

After a long period of inactivity, flights between Pierrefonds and Mauritius resume on November 2. Two weekly connections are scheduled, Wednesday and Saturday. On the same day, Air Austral will take off for Rodrigues, with a frequency of one flight per week. For the time being, the Mauritian authorities are banning all imports of poultry and poultry products from the sister island. The Civil Aviation Department has also informed Air Mauritius, Air France and Air Austral, which serve the Reunion/Mauritius link.

The customs department, for its part, has been ordered to be extra vigilant with regard to passengers coming from the sister island, and this, concerning any potential case of “smuggling” of poultry. An initiative that is part of the preparedness plan for the fight against avian flu of the Livestock and Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agro-industry.

The cabinet took note, on October 7, of the presence of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in three farms in Reunion. Informed, the Livestock and Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security immediately activated the disease preparedness plan, along with several measures. Thus the Department of Civil Aviation was asked to inform airlines operating on the Reunion-Mauritius corridor that passengers should not bring live poultry and poultry products.
In addition, visitors to the sister island will have to pass on the disinfection mat, currently used for passengers from Rodrigues. The customs service has been requested to reinforce the control of passengers in order to avoid any “smuggling” of live poultry or any other poultry product. The Food and Agricultural Research and Extension Institute is gearing up to raise awareness about HPAI biosecurity measures at the smallholder poultry farmer level.

No less than 200 heads of poultry had to be slaughtered recently at a private individual in Reunion in order to prevent the virus from spreading. The first cases of bird flu were detected last September in the West Island. As a reminder, this deadly viral disease particularly affects farmed birds, such as hens and ducks, and is transmitted extremely easily between animals, requiring mass slaughter.
